It’s a new season which means new shows to start while you still haven’t finished whatever aired last season or even last year. I’m gonna give my opinion on what I’m watching this season, what I’ve dropped, and what I might pick up later. 

Boku no Hero S3

I guess this is technically a continuation, but since they are choosing to air them with breaks between each season I’ll add it here. S3 starts with the training camp arc which I’ve been told is quite excellent. The first episode was recap/filler which is fine, and the next two have started things moving right along. I’m really excited to see what sort of battles we’ll get in the upcoming episodes since the last one ended on a pretty big cliffhanger. There seems to be a lot of potential character development for this season too. I hope it delivers (and it looks like it’s going to). The OP seems really off, but that’s neither here nor there. 

Megalabox

One of the front runners for AotS for me. An Ashita no Joe 50th anniversary project (watching the original anime is not required at all) that is absolutely dripping in style and old school funk. Our protagonist Junk Dog, later Joe, is set on the path to enter and win the big megaloboxing tournament. A rivalry between him and the current #1 boxer is setup and his manager/him have their lives on the line because they are dealing with the mob etc. It’s about as classic of a setup as you can possibly get for a boxing anime, but when you play all the tropes straight and do them well there’s no reason to change them. I definitely recommend watching this one. 

Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online

Did you like the idea of SaO but weren’t sold on the execution? Well I guess this isn’t really SaO other than being in the same universe, but it’s basically VR anime PUBG with a heckin’ cute girl in bright pink as your MC. So far it seems fun and the action is alright. It’s not really standing out that much to me, but I’m happy to watch it each week. There is some seriously strong moe gap between LLENN’s appearance and what she says/does. It’s wonderful. 

Hinamatsuri

Easily the best comedy that’s airing this season. The story is about a girl with psychic powers that drops into the home of a Yakuza boss (or at least high ranking guy) and ends up living there. The comedy is absolutely on point in pretty much every way. It’s got solid gags, good situational comedy, recurring jokes that work well, absurdity, and so on. The animation is also exceptionally good for this sort of show. It has me laughing out loud regularly each episode which is about the highest praise I can give a comedy. It’s even got some slower and sweeter moments mixed into all the absurdity and hilarity. Definitely recommend this one. (Bartender girl best girl)

Comic Girls

This is the seasonal excessively moe SoL/comedy/fanservicey/yuri bait show that we’ve all come to expect (and maybe even love). You’ve seen this show in about a hundred different incarnation and you’re going to watch it again because that’s what moe does to you. It doesn’t stand do a whole lot to stand out from the pack, but it’s a solid execution of the tropes/cliches you’ve come to expect from this genre. If this is your thing you’re gonna like this show. If it’s not, you’re not going to get much of anything out of it. 

Lupin III: Part 5

Lupin is a show that I’ve always meant to watch but never really got around to. With there being an airing version of it (that isn’t too heavy on plot continuity) I thought this was as good of a time as any to give the series a try. I’m happy to say that I’m absolutely loving it so far. It’s got that spy/thief thriller sort of thing going on, and having it set in modern times is a nice twist. While it’s certainly over the top in just about every way possible it’s just believable enough that you can suspend your belief and go along for the ride. The animation is top notch and heavily stylized. Whether this is good or bad is up to your tastes. Personally I’m really liking the style. This is my first Lupin III and I’m excited to get into it more! This show is worth giving a shot if you’re not already watching it. 

Steins;gate 0 - I haven’t gotten around to this one yet. It’s definitely on the watch list but I’ve been neglecting it. Everything I’ve heard about it has been good though.
