Sea I'm so tired of media using actual problems for creating good image for artists like in 2014-2016 it was cancer (bc of the movie The fault in our stars ) then suiside awareness (13 reasons why) now LGBTQ issues (like seriously so many ppl on Twitter are fetishizing mlm relationships bc of cmbyn ) like does the media and ppl forget that issues aren't trends. Twitter stans will Praise their idols for tweeting about an ongoing issue and never talk about it again .
A Tumblr friend recently observed how social media has corrupted the ideas of fandom and social justice, so that performative actions (especially actions that are visually appealing and extreme) get huge but temporary attention.
That includes performative actions by artists, by media, and by fans themselves.
âClicks, follows, and likesâ have cheapened social causes, and diluted the underlying values. Itâs hard to talk about complicated or morally ambiguous issues when everyone is shouting, and worse, when everyone wants attention on themselves.
Fandom has utterly changed through social media. Sometimes a lot of good can result from it, like when BTS fans matched charity donations and when Louies raised $2.8 million for charity in one night.
However, sometimes the cause-du-jour passes like lightning, and the only people to profit are those with the best marketing, the most aware of internet virality. Tiktok is the latest example of how our attention goes to the most expedient form of entertainment, far from the best.
This friend also mentioned how she still catches up with fandom friends from years ago, before Tumblr or Instagram. But internet fandom friends are different, relying on digital feedback and the numbers game (followers, likes, clout etc.) that instills anxiety.
