Do you ever look back at your life and wonder what 16 year old you would think of you? I am having this moment today. How would sixteen year old Kelsey look at me today? I think she would be scared of me. Intimidated by me. She wouldn’t be able to believe that I am she and she is me. That young woman was so afraid to shine, that on her sixteenth birthday, she didn’t wear the beautiful princess dress, because she was afraid people would dim whatever light was there. That’s sad. I wish I could meet her. I wish I could tell her all the amazing things that will change for her. Life has never been perfect, but one thing that I have learned is, every single hard time is an opportunity to grow or die. I choose to live and grow, and blossom into something no one saw coming!! Allow yourself to grow into that person you deserve to be. Start to tear those walls down and heal your wounds. That’s the only way your 16 year old you will ever be free. Yesterday I cried sooooo many tears and my girls Shapel and Akiba saved me from drowning. Shapel shared her mama and great grandma with me. When the elders get to talking about men and relationships....lord. They covered me in flowers, kisses and laughter. Akiba came for our weekly sleep over and she brought me towels and soaps and candy. Then the “text” from that long always missed lover who realizes you’re liberated again, to affirm alladis bawdy...yet I went to sleep still full of sadness and tears. I awoke this morning, quite surprisingly feeling lighter and full of clarity. I had a literal song in my heart and as I walked my babies to daycare and sang and drank coffee, Hunter looked at me then my backside and said “MAMMI?! Why your butt do that?” She pointed. I laughed and asked what and she responds “move all jiggly...” she is in awe. I said “I dunno because it’s big” and dreamily while looking ahead she says “I like It, I want my butt like that...” I make sure my babies know early on the magic they possess so they never ever allow their insecurities to have them volunteer for their humiliation the way I have so often done in my life.
