i reread some k/rra posts from like 8-10 yrs ago (shudder) and instantly discovered within myself new levels of previously untapped chill. i wasted so much time and energy on truly pointless arguments lmao
Kaiba Corporation Case Study
As part of your financial investments portfolio, you own stock in Kaiba Corporation (NYSE: KCRP). Following the announcement of the new Duel Disk, shares are trading at an all-time high of $413.98. However, its charismatic CEO, Kaiba Seto, is once again on a “leave of absence” for unknown medical reasons and for an indeterminate length of time, and Wall Street analysts generally agree that Kaiba Corporation’s recent investments in space infrastructure were a bad move on his part. The question remains as to whether the Duel Disk and other Kaiba Corporation verticals (e.g., the amusement parks) will be able to sustain Kaiba Corporation despite the undeniable money sink that is the KC-1 Space Station. Kaiba Corporation’s cash position is best described as “unstable” and leverage is higher than average compared to its competitors.
Since its inception, Kaiba Corporation has not been managed so much as it has been ruled by its dynastic chief executives — if they had a family motto, “my way or the highway” would be an apt choice. Their results have been undeniable, although their methods are, delicately speaking, suspect. Analysts note that Kaiba's younger brother, Kaiba Mokuba, filling in as interim CEO, will almost certainly act in lock-step with both his brother’s strategic objectives and the “family legacy” vis-à-vis management style. Given Kaiba’s absence, the company may double down on strategy that favors the status quo: in essence, making sure that when he returns, he will find it just as he left it. If righting the ship now means displeasing the Kaiba family in the future, clear-cut (dare I say “common sense”) solutions will not necessarily be available to decision-makers.
You will have the opportunity to vote on a new board of directors at the next annual shareholders’ meeting. You may choose to retain the current board — essentially a vote for Kaiba’s continued leadership — or vote to remove the current board and replace them with directors who are unlikely to allow Kaiba to continue his reign over Kaiba Corporation. As noted, share price is strong, but the future holds only uncertainty.
How do you vote?
i'm tired of his bullshit VOTE THIS BITCH OUT!!!!
he's done it once he'll do it again. LET HIM COOK!!!!
DSOD is actually crazy for the surveillance state stuff because if the only friend you've ever made that you're also psychosexually obsessed with disappeared off the face of the planet with no explanation and it feels like abandonment and betrayal and you're a billionaire child with almost no impulse control and controlling neurotic tendencies, perhaps you would ALSO implement a system that lets you track everyone's movement across time and space?
this is not an endorsement of the kaibopticon btw. i just think DSOD is crazy for this. atem disappeared. kaiba doesn't know how or where to. kaiba said "okay well i'm never losing track of anyone again." movie about grief of all fucking time
one of the most fun things about prideshipping for me personally is it takes kaiba's "fuck fate, fuck destiny, nothing is set in stone and everything can be changed" attitude and extends it to atem, who never gets a chance to question whether or not going to the afterlife is what he REALLY wants. he accepts his fate at the end of the ceremonial duel quite gracefully but being a gracious loser does not mean this is what he wanted -- even yuugi says "if i were him, i wouldn't want to be separated from my friends and go on alone... i feel his sorrow and pain"
kaiba does this for isis in their duel in battle city by changing the future she saw in her tauk. your destiny CAN be changed, you are NOT a slave to fate. so Kaiba barreling into aaru in a blaze of glory to challenge atem like "hey just checking: what do you REALLY want? has anyone ever given you the choice before? to decide your destiny on your own? to live a life on your own terms?" is so rich and juicy for the way it opens up avenues of conflict and tension and catharsis... what have we allowed because we assumed it was inevitable? what if it wasn't? if atem could choose, what would he choose? how would he choose to live? who would he choose to become? what does it mean to come back?

"why tf kaiba do all of that just to duel atem" wow so crazy that this happened in a manga / anime where duels via card games are inherently dialectical for the characters and fundamental to understanding how the characters relate to each other, themselves, and the world at large. bananas
in the Egyptian wing of the museum and my boyfriend is like "what are all the time periods of ancient Egypt" and I'm like predynastic, early dynastic, old kingdom which is when the pyramids were built, first intermediate, middle kingdom, second intermediate, new kingdom which includes amarna period and yugioh, third intermediate, and then all the late period stuff and macedonian and roman eras. and he's like run that by me one more time
in DM we see seto...
without hesitation jumping in to whale on other boys who appear to be his age or older
being very patient and game with mikey (mokuba-adjacent in age and appearance)
when hacking into kaibacorp, rebecca quips that he should give her a job, and he says "yeah i'll consider it"
losing his shit when zorc kills those two kids
while still generally being rude, dismissive, aloof, or standoffish to everyone his age or older.*
it's really easy to say "he just likes mokuba," and equally easy to say "he likes kids;" but it's more tempting, more interesting, adds some depth and a bit of a tweest if we read it a little differently: he's a bit more naive in his thinking and subconsciously divides the world into two flavors of people: everyone younger than him is a sweet baby to be indulged and protected; everyone his age and older (the adults, ANY adults) is suspect, possibly ill-meaning, not to be trusted. children good, adults bad, he is the line between them.
and when i say "naive," i mean this: when mokuba grow up to become a fully-realized adult and is behaving like a fully-realized adult, it may rattle seto and cause friction in the relationship when he is forced to confront the reality that his little baby brother who has always clung to him for protection and comfort is now a fully-realized adult, and the relationship has to change.
*noa is an exceptional case; his appearance is younger but he is the same age as seto. and also he kidnapped mokuba and did all that other stuff so of course seto's big mad
