Not a shop owner, but I've worked in retail for a while. I feel your pain.
iâve never worked in retail myself tho i have worked in food service, BUT i have so many friends in retail who have customers being awful about coupons and just like....godâs speed to you friend

idk about other stuff, but when i sell my sculptures i always get "hey like. sorry but can i get a discount i could make this thing myself" THEN MAKE IT YOURSELF, GOBLIN
omg the make it myself thing is the WORST. i have gotten that w/ some of my handmade items and i see it a lot when i post things on here like--people reblogging handmade items saying shit like â$20??? i could make this myselfâ and itâs just like well....then shut up and do it? you donât have to tell the artist and be a huge jackass? but then like ppl having the nerve to say stuff like that to your face and then expect you to give them a discount for them being a jackass to you???? oh my god
ALSO DISCOUNT GOBLIN IS NOW GONNA BE MY OFFICIAL TERM FOR THIS PHENOMENON THANK YOU

ive never had troubles with selling physical stuff but people love asking for discounts on like, commissioned art?? also, a guy tried to pay me in peaches once, like over the internet????
iâve also never had people ask me for discounts in person but idk why youâd ask someone online or what really makes it different? itâd be one thing if i was like, selling things at a yard sale or a flea market where people are more prone to haggle or something but....nah
iâve NEVER had someone ask me for a discount on commissions or freelance jobs i would be real grump about it. i mean like maybe family has done this to me but even then they just expect me to do it for free lmao. ALSO the peaches just?? was he going to ship them to you? oh my god

I sell vintage clothing and Y E P all the damn time. The answer is no. Wait for a sale or pay the full price
i ALSO get people asking me when iâm going to have a sale next and itâs like.....wtf? i havenât had the ability to have one yet and i have no idea when i will have one but i already keep my profit margins pretty close to as low as possible so itâs like why would you ever....have the balls to ask this....
and like do folks just think they are special and that like. i will give them stuff for cheaper out of admiration of their RAW GUMPTION or what lmao

For my art shop, yes. People always think artists want to work for free for some "exposure." It's so annoying. For my jewelry shop, never.
yeah--i definitely have experience with the exposure thing and having people ask for free work for WHATEVER reason--it gets old real fast.Â
