DanganRonpa 2: Goodbye Despair (2012)
This blog will be exploring randomcore- a term that I first heard to describe a kind of humor (that is oh so prevalent on tumblr) by Ilana from Broad City. (also salad fingers was super creepy). Of course, Broad City usually makes references to already established concepts, so I do not know if the show actually coined the term, and will fo sho look into it not tonight but definitely later. Perhaps this is the wrong term to use, and if so we will make adjustments. Naming things is hard.
The type of meme based nonsensical humor has been likened to a form of neo dadaism, which tumblr user inrealityadream explained very well in this post.
Why do we find anti-humor funny? Why did I chuckle when trying to create an example of randomcore, imagining a video of a piece of bread getting water poured on it put to mariachi music? The idea doesnβt seem inherently funny, it seems dumb. However, imagining how absurd and dumb it would be made it funny. Itβs funny cause it shocks you in some way.
Take the online gallery plugged in inrealityadreamβs post. Just look at it. What? Itβs hilarious, first of all. I opened the link and was delighted. Itβs not how things are supposed to look. It opens so many questions to things I thought I would never ask. Why is the text and images made to look like a transparent png file when you google it? Why are there volume icons over all the dogs? It doesnβt need to be like that.Β Itβs unnecessary. It doesnβt work.Β Itβs hilarious.
To me, randomcore is shitty ms paint drawings of dogs, seven second videos of a bug screaming, and an ipad at the bottom of a tub pretending to be a bathbomb. I will be exploring this neodada/shitpost/meme culture that has seemingly ruined my sense of humor, and tons of other peopleβs too. stay tuned, punks
