The Philosophy of Sophrosyne
Sophrosyne is a central virtue in ancient Greek philosophy, usually translated as:
self-control
temperance
moderation
sound-mindedness
inner harmony
But none of these translations fully capture its depth. Sophrosyne is not just about restraint—it is about being properly ordered within oneself. It names the state in which desire, reason, emotion, and action are in right proportion.
At its core, sophrosyne answers the question:
What does it mean to be truly master of oneself?
1. Sophrosyne as Inner Harmony (Plato)
For Plato, the soul has three parts:
Reason
Spirit (will, honor, drive)
Appetite (desire, pleasure, hunger)
Sophrosyne occurs when:
Reason governs
Spirit supports reason
Appetite obeys both
It is the virtue of agreement within the soul. Not suppression of desire—but coordination of it.
In The Republic, Plato defines sophrosyne as:
A harmony where the better part rules the worse with the consent of both.
So it is not violent self-denial—it is self-consent to proper order.
2. Sophrosyne as the Mean (Aristotle)
For Aristotle, sophrosyne is the virtue governing pleasure, especially bodily pleasure (food, sex, comfort).
It stands between:
Excess → self-indulgence
Deficiency → insensibility
A person with sophrosyne:
Enjoys pleasure
But is not ruled by it
Desires in the right way, at the right time, for the right reasons
This makes sophrosyne the foundation of moral stability, because if desire is ungoverned, no other virtue can stand.
3. Sophrosyne and Self-Knowledge
Sophrosyne is closely tied to the Delphic maxim:
“Know thyself.”
To practice sophrosyne is to know:
One’s limits
One’s temptations
One’s emotional patterns
One’s proper measure
It is the virtue of not overstepping one’s nature. Where hubris is arrogant overreach, sophrosyne is measured self-possession.
4. Political Sophrosyne: The Soul of a Just Society
The Greeks believed the city mirrors the soul.
A society with sophrosyne is one where:
Law restrains excess
Power is balanced
Appetite does not rule
Wealth does not dominate
Honor does not turn to tyranny
Thus sophrosyne is not only personal—it is civilizational restraint.
5. Sophrosyne vs. Repression
A crucial philosophical distinction:
Repression kills desire.
Sophrosyne educates desire.
Sophrosyne does not aim to make humans cold or passionless. It aims to make passion intelligent.
It transforms:
hunger → nourishment
lust → intimacy
ambition → purpose
pleasure → joy
6. Sophrosyne and Freedom
Paradoxically, sophrosyne makes one more free, not less.
A person without sophrosyne is:
Pushed by impulse
Ruled by craving
Trapped in cycles of excess and regret
A person with sophrosyne:
Chooses rather than reacts
Enjoys without addiction
Acts without compulsion
Sophrosyne is therefore freedom from being enslaved by yourself.
7. Sophrosyne vs. Modern Excess
Modern culture often celebrates:
indulgence
speed
extremity
constant stimulation
From a classical perspective, this is a crisis of sophrosyne. Without measured desire, societies drift into:
addiction economies
attention collapse
political extremism
emotional volatility
Sophrosyne stands as a forgotten counter-virtue to a world of endless appetite.
Conclusion
The philosophy of sophrosyne reveals it as:
Inner harmony between reason and desire
The virtue of measured pleasure
Self-knowledge in action
The opposite of hubris
The foundation of freedom
The moral architecture of a stable soul and a just society
Where hubris reaches too far, where excess burns itself out, where appetite devours meaning—
sophrosyne stands steady in the middle.
It is the quiet power of being rightly ordered within yourself.
"Today's lesson is the introduction of the concept of balance. In Japanese, we say... Chowa. Balance. Leonardo might say, that balance is important to remain focused and calm. And he is correct. Emotional calm is the bliss of Chowa. However, there is more to Chowa than just focus and calm. Now. If you look at your hand. For those of you with five fingers, one hand is enough. For those with three fingers, you can use two hands. Imagine your life in your hand. Imagine that your work is your pinky finger. Rest and inner peace can be your thumb. Learning is the index finger. And relationships is another, and joy is another. Now. What if your life lacks learning. What happens to your hand? Well, one finger disappears. And without learning, you lose growth. Without growth, joy and work will start to shrink. Imagine how strange your hand will look and how difficult it will be to manouver our day, when important parts of us are missing. We are all complex beings. We all need many things in our life to feel Chowa. Things like joy, rest, work, friends and growth." The rat fell silent and glanced at his student. To see them study their hands deep in thought made his chest feel warm and whole, and his eyes softened with a faint smile. "So.. How are you keeping balance between the things that are important to you in your life?"
I radiate confidence, self-respect, and inner harmony.

Ho'oponopono: The Ancient Hawaiian Healing Practice for Inner Harmony
Shaina Tranquilino
November 3, 2023
In today's fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the chaos and stress of our daily lives. We often find ourselves overwhelmed by negative emotions, past traumas, and relationships that need healing. However, amidst this turmoil, an ancient Hawaiian practice called Ho'oponopono offers us a powerful method to restore balance and harmony within ourselves and our relationships. What is Ho'oponopono? Ho'oponopono (pronounced HO-oh-pono-pono) is a traditional Hawaiian practice that means "to make right" or "to rectify an error." It is deeply rooted in the belief that everything in the universe is interconnected and that we are responsible for our own experiences – not only individually but also collectively. At its core, Ho'oponopono aims to heal and cleanse any disharmony within oneself while promoting forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration of relationships with others. How does it work? According to the teachings of Ho'oponopono, everything we experience originates from within ourselves. By taking responsibility for our thoughts, actions, and reactions towards events and people around us, we can begin to heal from deep-seated wounds. This practice shifts the focus away from blaming others or external circumstances and directs it inwardly towards self-reflection. The Four Key Phrases of Ho'oponopono: 1. I'm sorry (Kala) Admitting mistakes or acknowledging one's contribution to a problem is crucial in initiating the process of healing through Ho'oponopono. Saying "I'm sorry" doesn't necessarily mean you have done something wrong; rather, it signifies your willingness to take responsibility for creating harmony. 2. Please forgive me (Makala) Asking for forgiveness demonstrates humility and vulnerability. By recognizing our own shortcomings and seeking forgiveness, we open the door for healing and transformation. 3. Thank you (Mahalo) Expressing gratitude is a powerful tool in Ho'oponopono as it helps us shift our focus from negativity to appreciation. Gratitude allows us to find blessings even in challenging situations, fostering inner peace and harmony. 4. I love you (Aloha) Love is the ultimate healer in Ho'oponopono. By sincerely offering love to ourselves and others involved in a conflict or challenge, we release negative energy and invite compassion, empathy, and understanding into our lives. How to Practice Ho'oponopono: 1. Find a quiet space: Set aside some time where you can be alone without distractions. 2. Reflect on the issue: Identify an area of your life that needs healing or a relationship that requires reconciliation. 3. Repeat the four key phrases: While focusing on the issue at hand, repeat each phrase – "I'm sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you" – either silently or out loud. Allow yourself to feel the emotions associated with these words. 4. Visualize healing: Imagine the situation being transformed into one of perfect harmony and wellbeing. See all parties involved releasing any negative feelings and embracing forgiveness. 5. Repeat regularly: Make Ho'oponopono a regular practice, allowing it to become an integral part of your daily routine. Regularly revisiting this process will strengthen your ability to heal deep-seated wounds and maintain healthy relationships. Ho'oponopono offers us a profound opportunity for personal growth, emotional healing, and restoration of relationships within ourselves and with others. By taking responsibility for our experiences through humble acknowledgment, sincere apologies, gratitude, and heartfelt love, we can foster inner harmony while creating positive ripples in the world around us. Remember that change takes time; practicing Ho'oponopono consistently will gradually transform your mindset, allowing you to embrace forgiveness, compassion, and love more readily. Embrace the power of Ho'oponopono and discover its transformative potential within yourself and in the relationships that matter most to you.
