It was strange to be in the presence of a... peaceful earth bender, for lack of better wording. During a good portion of his life, people with those abilities had been a threat and yet.... this one wasn't. Or at least their whole nation was not aiming to conquer things from what he had been told.

Still, it was hard to not get in a defensive stance the moment his eyes laid upon her. And to see this young woman do so much earth bending when people twice her age weren't so talented... it was almost scary.

The small, rippling waves lapped against the shore of the pond. It was nothing substantial; more of a puddle than anything. Appa couldn’t drink from it. The others couldn’t bathe or swim in it. Momo had taken to prodding the surface once, then shaking his wet paw back and forth with regret.

Appa lowered his massive head to the murky water, nostrils flaring. But the gentle disturbance wasn’t caused by his rumbling exhales, nor Momo’s prodding.

Something bobbed to the surface of the water, the sky bison leaning back with a snort of surprise.

Well, that was a question. Katara could only blink at Toph in response even though she knew the other girl would not be able to see the absolute shock and lowkey horror that was colouring her expression.

Was Zuko happy about being forced into an arranged marriage? Of course not, but it was something he had known would likely end up being a possibility from a very young age. However, he knew that his mother had once tried to fight his father on the idea when Ozai had started finding a match for him. She was no longer here however and Ozai was. To keep the peace, Zuko agreed. Otherwise he knew that Fire Lord Ozai would tear the Earth Kingdom down. Toph Beifong was practically royalty herself, not quite, but the Earth King’s did not have any daughters. So Toph was up for the taking it seemed. Zuko had not known that his father had decided on her when they’d been but ten and eight years old.

He folded his arms across his chest, a way of showing his annoyance about the situation, rather than her, without being able to fully vocalize it, no matter how alone they were.

“Sometimes you have to accept truths that are difficult, even if they have been forced upon you.” That sounded like something that would come out of his Uncle’s mouth, not his own. Perhaps he had been spending too much time with the old man.

Zuko let out a breath through his nose before he said, “Look, I’m not happy about this either. But if you think about it, this is the best thing for both of our nations.” And with the Avatar still missing, Zuko was willing to do whatever he could in order to protect his people and others too. If his father knew that he thought that way, he knew he’d get burned for it.
