Welcome to Day 8 of 24 and my beloved Sam’s birthday! It’s been a while since I was last supposed to post on the road to Day 24, so we’re just going to pretend that I didn’t just miss a bunch of days, so I don’t have to overwhelm myself to make up for it. (I’ve been busy with grad school finals, BF’s birthday, and family stuff, so not a lot of time to keep on top of my social media game). However, I’ve got a great story to tell today. I once dated a guy who discouraged me from writing. He got jealous if a love interest wasn’t about him writing wasn’t about him So, I took a break writing this book for a year and a half. Then, when I finally had the courage and curiosity to pick up the story again, I realized that I LOVED writing. I promised myself that I would never give it up again for anyone. I’m tired of seeing stories where women are constantly choosing men over their heart’s desires. That’s why my heroines are written to choose themselves and their passions above all else. Also, that’s why I LOVE my current boyfriend, because he lets me go sit in a room by myself and ecstatically giggle at what I’m writing with (almost) no judgment. And he also listens to me occasionally if I have a funny scene to share (although I know he doesn’t care one lick about romance books). Day 2 of 24 The previous titles and covers of this book are an obvious sign to me of how much I have grown as a writer and as a person. The story developed over the course of seven years as I went through high school, college, and now grad school. Yesterday, I shared my newest book cover developed by the designers at Inkitt, but I would like to share the past two book covers that I designed. The first cover is one that I created on an old photo editor when I had ZERO training in graphic design. At the time I started publishing this book on Wattpad, it was named “Keep Calm and Fall for Your Best Friend’s Brother.” I’m so disappointed that I can’t find the image of it anywhere. I must have been ashamed of how bad it was, but now I wish I had kept the file to compare to later. Basically, it was a purple border around an angsty picture of a bad boy kissing a girl with the title laid vertically on the page. Absolutely HORRIBLE, but still, I wish I had it to share now. The second cover introduced the current, snappier title “I Shouldn’t Want You” and was designed on Canva. With this title and cover, I completed the book and reworked the structure to come to an ending that my seventeen-year-old self couldn’t have predicted and wouldn’t have been satisfied with. The newest cover, although I didn’t design it, symbolizes my first thorough and complete edit of the book to the point that I could hand it off and be proud of its current state. Sure, it’s probably not perfect, but I learned so much about myself, my writing style, who I wanted to be, and what I wanted my writing to represent for readers.
