The Power of Words

Iris was always at work on time, but today was a special day. Today she wasn’t there as a librarian - she was there as an author. She’d finished her novel at long last, gone through the long and grueling process of editing and rewriting, and now she finally had a book to show for it.
The Guardian was her second true romance, a sweeping tale of a headstrong and sometimes reckless noblewoman and her dedicated bodyguard. She had turned the tables on them, however, seeing the guard injured and his ward now in charge of his recovery. It had turned out a good way to foster the needed intimacy between them, a relationship beginning to bloom through the care and vulnerability of the moment.
Indulgent? Sure. But wasn’t that the beauty of the genre? People read romance novels as an escape, and she was happy to provide one. It remained to be seen how it would be received, she wasn’t sure what kind of showing she would get for her signing, but even if only one or two people showed up, she’d consider it a success.
He enjoyed reading books whenever he got the chance, but books would never beat his first love. Forging. It was so satisfying hearing the sound of metal and feeling the heat envelope your body. Today he was off the clock, so he decided to make his way to the library. Apparently there was a new novel. The Guardian, He more or less knew as much as the public did. The premise, however he was intrigued by it. Yes, it was romance. He knew that. Just because he had a scar on his face didn’t mean he didn’t enjoy romance.
And so here he was awaiting in the library. He knew of the author, by name of course. Iris. Still, he wanted to read the book. Noting there was no one yet he decided to make his way to her. The only reason why there were no people was because it was early in the morning. That meant he got the first copy ever. Maybe he’d get a signature?
Waving towards the author he smiled and pointed at the book on the table. “I am here for The Guardian. Is it here?” Perhaps it was odd for someone like him to ask for a book? He wasn’t sure. to be honest. Really he hoped she wasn’t frightened of his appearance. He wasn’t going to attack out of nowhere.

It was still early when the first person came, and Iris smiled warmly as he approached. He wasn’t, at a glance, one would peg for liking such tales, which honestly delighted her. People going out and defying stereotypes was always a beautiful thing to witness. She brushed her hand over the books she had on display with a proud smile at his question, nodding. “It is, yes. That’s why I’m holding the event, to promote it.”
It made her a little nervous, it had been years since she’d done anything of the sort and stepping back into the swing of things was harder than she’d expected. But here she was, and she reminded herself that anyone who came would have come out of interest, after all. It was going to be a positive experience.
She took one of the books in hand, turning it and getting her pen out, smiling at the stranger. “Who should I make it out to?”
