iniustus said: Jesus christ, I’m so confused. Lol, you’re so much more academically achieved than I am. I got 4 Bs and 3 Cs on my report, but hopefully I can get into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (which is really awesome and prestigious lol).
yo listen up here's a story
about a girl that lives in singapore
and all day and all night and everything she sees
is confusing as fuck
because this is singapore
okay so basically
O Levels- Ordinary Levels. You take these at the end of your secondary school education, usually at age 16.
A Levels- Advanced Levels (a bit like Harry Potter, I know.) You take these at the end of your tertiary education, and this cert only is eligible for Junior College (JC) students.
For O levels, you need to get as little points as you can because the system goes like this:
A1 (>75 marks (out of a 100)
A2 (70-74 marks)
B3 (65-69 marks)
B4 (60-64 marks)
C5 (56-59 marks)
C6 (50-55 marks)
and so on.
So the ideal grades are all A1s, and for O levels, you take the number behind the grade and add them up. Therefore the lower your score the better. (Minimum of 6 subjects for O levels, and the lowest you can score is 0, actually, if you get 1 for every subject. For extra co-curricular activities and Higher Second Languages you can minus off altogether 6 points. But you don't need to understand this it'll confuse you.)
I usually get a smattering of As and Bs? Occasionally a C. But who knows, your syllabus is harder? You are older than me, after all.
Okay so anyway, if you want to go to a JC, they'll calculate your L1R5 (I won't tell you how they calculate for Polytechnic, which is another institution, and I know this shit is confusing as it is.) Language 1, Relevant 5 = they'll take the score of one language (English or your Chinese/Malay/Tamil) and relevant 5 subjects for the course you're studying- Biology, Chemistry, etc (students can take up to like 11 subjects if they choose, but only 6 are taken into account). For example, my report card, even though it seems decent enough, is
English - A1
Mathematics - B3
Malay - C5
Science (Biology, Chemistry) - B3
Principle of Accounts - B4
Art - A2
Humanities (History, Social Studies) - B3
So my L1R5 is only a 15 (1+2+3+3+3+4= ack wait this isn't 15 but okay I can't remember my exact grades, but I know I got a 15 for something altogether eeep)
So um yeah welcome to the life of the average Singapore student. Plus my school's standards are like low so I will have a super duper hard time. Our papers are marked by Cambridge's examiners which is fucking scary if you ask me.
