I always struggle with “unpopular opinions” because I’m terrible at analyzing what exactly is popular. I mean some might argue that being a bangel fan is unpopular or even just like - not hating Angel lol. But at one point those two things were extremely popular so let me think of something else. 

I guess one unpopular opinion I have is that I’m not a big fan of Anya’s role on the show. Her presence seems to entirely revolve around Xander and their relationship is not one I enjoy. We never really flesh out why she is so self-centered and callous (does she have a soul now?). She is rarely if ever a good friend to anyone, aside from Xander (and some would argue if she is a good friend to him...or if he was a good partner for her... ?). She exists solely for comedic relief but she lacks the substance and nuance that they gave Cordelia. 

You could argue that season 7 fleshed Anya out some, outside of her relationship with Xander. And that’s partly true. I do appreciate Selfless and some of the progress we see with her character. But first of all, I find it all too little and too late. And secondly, the progression of the character stalls, once again, after that episode. She shows no continued significant growth and blends into the background for the remainder of the season with only a few key moments (one in Empty Places which is COMPLETELY out of line in my opinion).

Whew this. I can’t STAND Seg-El. This type of leading man will always be boring. I can do without Nyssa as well. Just...

I was answering this yesterday and then I got distracted by life and lost my answer so here we go again:

In the early seasons, I absolutely love the Giles and Willow dynamic. Have you ever noticed how Willow has a photo of her and Giles in her locker? I think that’s adorable. They have such a close relationship that almost rivals Giles’ relationship with Buffy. Willow is the first person that Giles tells that he is thinking of leaving in season 5, for example. So, yeah, Willow threatening Giles in s6 is uncomfortable, to say the least. But I think that’s the point of this moment right? To show how magic is changing Willow. How her behavior is unlike the Willow we know and love. And how her relationship with this kind of magic will change her and eventually break her in s6. 

And since magic is drugs in s6 (ugh...) you could even interpret this as an addict and how their personality changes with their loved ones when they are struggling with addiction. I also think that the show does a disservice by only focusing on how Giles’ leaving affects Buffy. Because in my mind, Giles isn’t only leaving Buffy, he is leaving all of the scoobies, and because I feel that Giles and Willow had a close relationship we should acknowledge that she may have been feeling lonely and isolated by him as well (and this may have potentially lead to her delving deeper into her addiction?)
