Giving Hulk control wasn't as easy as just saying it, though. Bruce definitely wanted Steve to observe - preferably Steve and Tony both. "He hasn't earned this level of trust," he admitted. "And I'm not comfortable with him in the driving seat."
"He knows that," Tony huffed. Tony seemed a lot more at ease with the prospect that Bruce ever would be. "He's been itchin' to come out, sure, but he knows the two of you have to share the one body. He's more okay with it than you give him credit for."
Bruce grit his teeth. "I know you trust him, since he saved your life and all - "
"You both did."
"Nevertheless," Bruce said, cutting him off. "He's very unpredictable. Even with my resolve he has moments of wanting to break free and I will never, ever feel comfortable giving him control. The whole 'give an inch' idiom is extremely à propos. Give him an inch, and he'll take a fucking planet. You have to watch him."
"Yeah, yeah. Okay, Banner."
"I mean it." Of course Hulk vehemently disagreed, but Bruce stuffed him down. "This isn't a game, it's my life. And by proxy, his. You can't fuck around."
Tony quieted at the urgency Bruce pressed on him and rubbed the back of his neck. "Fine, we'll 'watch' him, or whatever. But I'll prove to you that there's nothing to worry about. You'll see."
"I intend to," Bruce said. Part of the compromise included wearing a body camera every night, to see what Hulk saw and hear what Hulk heard. "I'll review the data each morning. And if I see anything untoward, the experiment's over. Done. No second chances."
Tony almost rolled his eyes but chose not to after Bruce shot him a deadly glare. "It'll be fine," he said.
"I hope so," Bruce muttered. But even if they tried it, he wasn't one hundred percent sure Hulk wouldn't do something against his will. Regardless of what he told the others.
**
"Is everything set?"
"For the fiftieth time, Banner--!"
"Stop." Steve felt Tony's shoulder's tense; he was practically vibrating. While Bruce thought Tony was acting cocky, Steve knew Tony's worry was equally high - he just had a weird way of showing it. "We're ready. D'you think you're relaxed enough to sleep?"
"I kinda have to be, don't I?" The nervous chuckle Bruce gave was less than reassuring. "I mean, unless he can take over when I'm wide awake, without me knowing."
Bruce was half-kidding and they could hear his gallows humor loud and clear. Ultimately losing himself to Hulk scared Bruce most, whether or not he voiced it. "We've got this, Muffin," Steve said, and he wrapped his arms as far as they could go around Bruce's midsection. "I'll take point tonight, Tony tomorrow night."
Bruce pointed to Tony. "You're sleeping in your nanosuit, right?"
Tony tapped his chest, and the lights woven into his shirt fabric glowed. "Not as comfy as I'd like, but I'm on backup. Trust us, Pooh. We got this."
"And I'm all set," Steve said, tugging his earlobe. "Jarvis has me connected. I won't miss anything."
"Okay...okay."
Bruce was anything but okay, though, so Steve held out his hands. "C'mon, let's try it," he said, waiting for Bruce to take his hands. He gently guided them back to their bed, crawled on top of the sheets, and motioned between his legs. "Sit."
Bruce's cheeks pinked up, but he swallowed and lumbered across the sheets to settle between Steve's legs. "Now lay back."
"Steve--"
"Do it."
Bruce huffed, but followed Captain America's command. Steve hid his smile; he'd unearthed small ways that calmed his boys, and as much as Bruce fought against the truth he loved Steve cuddling and nurturing him. He initially pretend not to, but Steve felt how quickly tension left Bruce's body when he took control and treated Bruce special. Bruce only accepted the whole, "I'm in charge, I can handle you" treatment from Steve.
And boy, did he take to it.
Steve widened his stance a little more, feeling his body respond as Bruce nestled in. Over the past few weeks he'd noticed Bruce's broadening backside, even if Bruce didn't. "That's it," Steve whispered. Bruce let out a small sigh as Steve cocooned him as much as he could. His arms couldn't reach around like they used to, but they could cuddle.
"Can I be jealous? I think I've got room to be jealous."
Steve chuckled and patted the bedâs edge. "There's plenty of room for both of you on this bed, Tony."
"Mm," Bruce let out a lengthy sigh. Steve could feel Bruce's body sink into his as they all flirted with sleep. He lightly fingered Bruce's curls, easing him further in. "Not for long."
Steve snorted and grabbed a pillow so Tony could lean against his left side. "Not for long," he agreed. "We'll make you into a marshmallow man yet."
"Now that I'd like to see," Tony said, yawning.
Me too, Steve thought, but he didn't voice it.
**
Captain Rogers.
Steve stirred. What--?
Steve. Captain Rogers.
"Uh?" He blinked. What time was it?
Sorry to disturb you, but you did ask me to alert you.
Steve tapped his ear as he became fully conscious. "Jarvis?"
Yes, Captain Rogers. I'm speaking from your earpiece. You asked me to alert you when Doctor Banner woke - he is currently on the move, and headed for the nearest kitchen.
"Oh, right. On my way."
Steve frowned; he should've felt Hulkâs movements, at the very least. Glancing at the other side of the bed Tony was snoring up a storm. Hulk hadn't disturbed Tony either, apparently.
"Jarvis?" He whispered. "Is Bruce...Bruce right now, or Hulk?"
The AI paused.
Apologies, sir. It's impossible to determine at this time.
Great. What the hell did that mean?
"Okay..." Steve made a face and put on his sweats before heading towards the north kitchen. Guess he'd figure it out when he got there. If it was bad he'd tell Jarvis to alert Tony, but he honestly had no clue what to expect.
In hindsight, they really should've asked Hulk more questions when he showed up.
**
As Steve skittered around the kitchen corner, the only thing he noticed was the wide-open fridge door. He'd come from the opposite side expecting to see Hulk towering over the kitchen island, but he didn't see Hulk. He heard intense munching from inside the refrigerator instead.
"Bruce?" He whispered.
"Grrah... No Banner! Hulk!"
What on earth...?
Steve padded over cautiously and peered over the fridge door. It certainly looked like Bruce, crouched and hunched inside the icebox. But there was something...animalistic about Bruceâs demeanor. Large crumbs and half-eaten empty dishes surrounded him while a mountain of food detritus stained the front of his shirt. He hunkered over a casserole dish with a turkey leg, and used said turkey leg to scoop up whatever existed in the casserole dish.
"Is Hulk!" He repeated loudly, spewing food in every direction. He glared at Steve from half-slit eyes and dug his turkey leg into the dish, taking another huge bite. Food bits fell off the turkey and down his robe.
Steve's mouth flew open. He couldn't help but stare a few beats before speaking. "Uh, wow. Now I see it." Hulk was in charge, but he'd kept Bruce small.
Incredible, Steve thought.
"Hmm!" Hulk-Bruce grunted and slammed the turkey leg into his chest as if asserting dominance. "Banner isn't Hulk. Hulk is Hulk. Hulk will make Banner like Hulk!"
Steve couldn't help the grin that suddenly teased the corners of his lips. "You're doing a great job, Hulk," he told him, and Hulk nodded proudly before tearing into the meat.
"Banner's still too puny," Hulk laughed. His voice was a hybrid between Bruce and Hulk's, low and rough with Bruce's timbre. "Hulk can make Banner all chubby, like Banner wants. But Hulk wants real food."
Steve scratched his chin, trying to decipher what Hulk meant. "Do you mean you like different things?"
Hulk grunted and used the turkey leg as a pointer. "Like that,â he growled, pointing to a casserole. âAnd that. Those are good. Not this." He pointed to a cake.
"Hmm." Steve pursed his lips, musing over the new information. It looked like Hulk liked meat and fried foods, but Bruce typically went for sweets. "Got it. We can have it ready tomorrow, Br--er, Hulk. Just tell us what you want."
"Mm. Good," Hulk muttered. He used the back of his arm to wipe away the food covering his chin and lips. "More of that," he said, pointing to cold fried chicken. "More grease."
"Anything else?" Steve started taking notes in his head. "You can have anything you want."
Hulk perked up, eyes widening. "Anything?"
Within reason, Steve thought, but he wasn't going to deny Hulk if he kept eating like this. "Sure," Steve said. "Name it."
**
"Oh my God." Bruce held his head in his hands as he reviewed the footage early next morning. "Steve, why the hell did you tell him--"
"Câmon, it's not that bad, Pooh Bear."
Bruce's eyebrow quirked as he glared at Tony.
"You're kidding, right?"
Tony shrugged. "It's not impossible."
Steve wrinkled his nose. "I can't understand how he knew."
"He sees everything I do, but he doesn't understand it. That's the problem." Bruce belched and rubbed his tummy. The stuffing from Hulk's night raid hurt, but he hoped to be hungry for lunch later. "Thereâs no way we can get all that crap. Even if we did, who the fuck could cook it?"
Tony smirked. "Leave it to me. I've got four-star chefs in my back pocket. If anyone knows, they will."
"He'd never know," Bruce muttered, even as Hulk roared in his head. "You could cook anything. He'd eat it."
Tony held up a hand. "Nothin' doin'. My Green Bean wants what he wants, and I'll get it for him hell or high water."
"That's what I'm afraid of," Bruce said, sighing miserably.
Christ. He felt ill.
**
Steve turned off the Hulk footage after viewing it with Tony for the third time. They both agreed it was practically pornographic, but they needed to see it again. For research.
Yep. Research.
"So? Thoughts?"
Tony shrugged, bumping Steve's shoulder. Feeling frisky Tony ran his stocking foot up Steve's leg and Steve had a feeling the three of them would enjoy themselves later.
"It's not as dire as Bruce makes it and honestly, I bet he's secretly pleased. Hulk totally behaved himself, totally stuffed our boy with some high dollar menu items. I have a feeling we'll appreciate the results in a pretty short time."
Steve grinned as his face got hot. "You should've been there, Tony. Hulk's an eating dynamo, nothinâ stopping him. He got filthy, though. Made him take a shower before we went back to bed."
"Bet Hulkie loved that," Tony laughed. "Can't imagine him wanting to take a shower, by any stretch."
"Nah. It was okay. He liked me scrubbing him down. In fact, I think...well."
Tony perked up and maneuvered his body to catch Steve's eye. "What?"
Steve scratched his neck and sheepishly looked away. "I think Hulk enjoys sharing Bruce's body, like last night. It gives him another perspective he doesn't normally have. I got the feeling he wants to take over Bruceâs body more often."
"Hm." Tony's expression sobered. "Don't let Bruce hear you say that. He'll go apeshit."
"I know. He's already concerned about their boundaries and this sharing thing is stressful for Bruce. But is it bad? I mean, Hulk would still be 'out' more or less. But there wouldn't be any property damage. Bruce wouldn't have to worry about Hulk making a mess."
"But he's also blind to Hulkâs actions," Tony countered. "And there's no guarantee Hulk wouldn't take over their body and swell it green if he got mad enough." Tony tsked between his teeth. "I dunno, Steve. I'd keep that between you and me. If Bruce decides he wants more he'll tell us, but I'm kinda iffy on that front."
"Yeah," Steve sighed. "Maybe you're right."
"I am," Tony said. He clasped Steve's arm. "Don't fall into the trap. Hulk is a good bro but Bruce is right; you've gotta watch him. He'll take whatever you give him, and weasel for more."
"Like what he wants for dinner," Steve moaned.
Tony laughed. "Yeah. Like that. I got it set up, though. The caterers'll have it ready by 11 tonight. Just in time for our Green Bean to dig in."
"Can't believe you found someone to cook that...stuff," Steve mumbled. He ran a hand down his face. "You got it so damn fast."
"Oh? Didn't you know?" Tony plastered on his sharkiest, snarkiest grin and held out his hand. "Hi, I'm Tony Stark. I get shit done."

Iâve been off for a while, but Iâm writing what could be my Magnum opus of chubby banner fic. Iâm still working on it - itâs an AU of Infundo Chronicles dealing with a positive immobile take on chubby!Bruce (the opposite of Care and Feeding of Insecure Scientists, I sâpose).
But man. This pupper is one of the longest fics Iâve written in this genre and it suddenly took a mind-bending turn. Iâm excited to release it into the wilds but itâs not ready yet. I donât want to post it until Iâm ready.Â
(I know I have others - promise, Iâm getting to them! But this is a quickieâŚ)
Yes, anon! He does have a few nervous habits. He still rubs his knuckles when heâs nervous and/or cleans his glasses, but he also sits back in his (reinforced) chairs and taps his belly when heâs thinking. Or drums his fingers across the widest part of his stomach. His big tum makes a good shelf for his laptop as well - and he likes using it as a book rest, when he reads before bedtime.
Tony has noticed that Bruce occasionally uses one hand to rub his side when heâs deep in thought, and Steve noticed that Bruce uses his foot to propel himself back and forth in his rolling chair when heâs trading ideas with Tony, or another SI scientist.
Bruce used to bite his nails, but chocolate bars have pretty much taken that habit away. Heâll usually unwrap a chocolate bar and nibble at it if heâs uncomfortable with a situation. Chocolate usually helps calm him down.
How would Tony react to Bruce bringing a baby dragon back from his Asgard trip?
Ohh, anonâŚTony isnât exactly a pet person, although Lily is the exception. A dragon, though? I guess it would depend how big it got.  Like, if it stayed Lily-sized (aka early Lockheed from the X-Men) then maybe. Tonyâd probably treat it like one of his bots, but heâd be very wary of dragon poop - cause that stuffâs gonna stink.Â
But if itâs small, he might be okay with it, Heâd be curious, no doubtâŚbut them keeping it? He probably wouldnât like it.
Heâd ask Bruce to give it to Dr. Strange, âcause you know Stephen Strange probably has a menagerie of dragons in his backyard.
Does Bruce ever have sensory overload when interacting with the boys? Tony seems like he'd be extremely handsy and I'm curious if it ever bothers or overwhelms Bruce.
(I may create a story about this, but for now itâs a headcanon)
***
In a way, anon. Being chubbier has made Bruce a lot more sensitive to all his senses (except perhaps hearing) and every once in a while, when itâs too much, he can dissociate. Sometimes dissociation is a good thing because he can let go and trust his partners - but other times, if heâs not in a good place, itâs a gateway for the Hulk. If Bruce gets into a certain head space heâll need constant attention from Tony and Steve, and theyâll have to keep asking him if heâs okay. If at any time he canât answer, theyâll pull back.Â
Bruce is pretty touch starved, due to a lack of positive touch reinforcement growing up - and the lightest touch can arouse him or put him over the edge. Tony can tell if Bruce is in the mood by touching him; if Bruce stiffens, heâs not. If he leans into him, Tony will keep his touches soft and gentle until Bruce either says something, or responds in kind. Touch is foreplay for Bruce, more or less, and he trusts his partners not to abuse that fact.
Sometimes too much food awakens Bruceâs sexual appetite, and certain foods and food combinations can cause Bruce to briefly dissociate.
Bruce has come to an agreement with his partners, since Tony and Steve are pretty much âonâ all the time (Steveâs super soldier serum gives him a healthy sexual appetite, while Tony is naturally sexual). They have to start out slow, to give Bruce time to adjust.
One thing Bruce cannot tolerate, though, is noise. He canât handle loud noises or too much noise - those are triggers for him. If he ends up working in a lab with Tony for a project he may wear earplugs or put on his own headphones to cancel out Tonyâs rock ballads. He needs time in a quiet area after being around crowds of people and loud noises. And if people heâs not familiar with touch him, then yes - he definitely reaches an uncomfortably high threshold of sensory overload pretty quickly.
Whatâs important is, Steve and Tony and Bruce have navigated their relationship fairly well, and are good at noticing the othersâ signs. They know that a hand on Bruceâs shoulder is ok, but outright hugging him in public isnât. Thatâs too much for him. Theyâve learned what Bruce is comfortable with, and what heâs not - and they pay attention to when heâs not feeling up to people (and also when he needs them more than ever).Â

Heâs not my very *favorite* chubby Avenger (obvs!), but I really donât mind him being chubby under certain conditions. I do write about the possibility of him becoming chubby in this story and Iâve discussed it a while back.  But honestly, in my headcanon, Tony has too much nervous energy to be chubby for long. Now, I can say with absolute certainty that when you get over a certain age everything slows down and we do gain weight (happens to every one of us) and I could see Tony putting on ten to fifteen pounds - but probably not much more tha that. Heâs a hummingbird, and he forgets to eat unless Bruce or Steve reminds him.
What would chubby!bruce do if he found an orphan on the street? Would he adopt her/him? How clingy would they be to him? (I think the child would find his soft body a huge comfort and hardly leave his side)
((I saw this ages ago, anon, and Iâve been trying to come up with something that works, but it was going to become a huge epic that I kept defeating in my mind. I may still use your original idea, but for now I kindaâŚtweaked your idea. Please donât be mad. :) ))
***
Tony did a double-take from his tablet after  Bruce casually strolled by him. Bruce was whistling, which wasnât that bothersome. He was also carrying an armload of groceries too, but that didnât bother Tony either. What did bother him, thoughâ
âBruce.â He didnât bark Bruceâs name, per se, but his tone was far from gentle. âWhat the hell is that?â
âHm? Oh. I bought a few extra snacks.â Bruceâs cheeks colored slightly as tugged his shirttails; some of the lower buttons were threatening to cede from their holes. Â âGuess Iâve been plowing through them a bit more than normal, and my appetiteâs increââ
âNo, no no,â Tony growled. He vaulted over the couch, which caused Bruceâs right eyebrow to raise a millimeter, and landed in front of him. âHell with the groceries. I donât care jack shit about the groceriesââ although he did pause to pinch Bruceâs side and smirk wickedly, before barreling on.
âIâm talking about that.â Tony pointed at the creature that dared  set foot in his house. âWhat. Is. That.â
Bruce almost rolled his eyes. âAnd you call yourself a genius. When a girl dog and a boy dog fall in loveââ
âBanner!â
âFine,â Bruce said, letting out a long, tired sigh. âIt followed me home. I promise you, I didnât feed it, and I barely spoke to itââ
Tony moaned. âYou talked to it.â
âBarely. I said âshoo.ââ
âAnd?â
Bruce switched his feet. âI may haveâŚpet it.â
âAnd?â
âOkay, okay. So maybe I checked itâs collar and cuddled it a little too.â
Tony shook his head. âTake it to the pound, Bruce.â
âI will,â he drawled. He put the groceries in the kitchen, and the weird little dog - part chihuahua and maybe part dachshund and something else - followed quietly on Bruceâs heels, like it owned the place. Or owned Bruce, at least.
âIâll take it over in the morning.â
Tony rolled his eyes. âWe are not keeping that thing overnight. You see how little it is? Itâll yap all goddamn night! Plus, I bet it has a shitload of fleas and ticks, and God knows what elseââ
âJarvis,â Bruce said, calmly ignoring Tony, âplease order some dog flea shampoo, a dog comb, a collar, and some dog food. A good kind. Moist, and dry - for dogs under ten pounds.â
âBruce!â
âTony,â Bruce sighed. âItâs too late to take it over now, the poundâs closed. And Iâm sorry I didnât ask you or Steve, but Iâm not going to kick it to the curb. I canât do it.â
And because. Just because it could. It made a small whimpering noise, and stared at Tony with its huge, round, anime eyes.
âDonât you start,â Tony groused. He swore quietly under his breath. âOne night,â he spat. âBut only if Steve agrees. Clean it up, do whatever you need to, but it stays in the guest bathroom.  And Iâm not picking up any shit or piss!â
âUnderstood,â Bruce said, but Tony swore he saw a small smirk of victory pinking the manâs lips. âJarvis, put in an order for some puppy training pads, too.â
âHonestly,â Tony grumped. âItâs a hazard, Bruce. Itâll be underfoot and itâll shed everywhere. Clean it up or whatever so it doesnât spread itâs germs and junk all over, but I want it out first thing.â
âGot it.â
Tony made a face and stomped out of the room.âGuess I should be lucky he didnât make friends with a Rottweiler.â
**
âA stray, huh?â
Steve gently spread his fingers up and down the newly washed pup, and he and Bruce estimated the dog to be maybe a year old, although it was still so small. But they both figured itâs smallness was due to the breed, too.
âProbably.â Heâd just fed it a moment ago, and it gobbled down the food as if it hadnât eaten in a week. Which couldâve been true, since it was so very skinny on top of being on the small side. âDespite how small the dog is, it had a number of fleas, and I donât think itâs been treated well.â
Steve made a face when he felt a few rough patches beneath the dogâs short fur. âThose feel like bad scabs.â He looked up at Bruce while simultaneously picking up the light dog - barely five pounds, by Bruceâs estimations - and cuddling it close. It whimpered softly, but gently nosed Steveâs chest. âShh,â he cooed. He carefully rocked it in his arms. âDid it feel warm to you, when you held it?â
âYeah, but Iâm not sure if thatâs normal, or not.â Bruce sighed, folding his arms across his ample middle. âIâm thinking the dog followed me home because itâs practically given up. It was either take a chance on me, or die in the streets.â
Steveâs hand paused, and the dogâs tail thumped gently across his arm. âYou think?â
âItâs a possibility. But we canât let him get too comfortable; we have to get it back to the pound in the morning. Tony wasnât all that happy with me.â
âMm.â
They both remained quiet for a few extended seconds, then Bruce casually glanced at his nails.âWe should take it to the vet first, though. If it is sick, we really donât want it infecting the others.â
âGood idea,â Steve said quickly. A bit too quickly, really. âFor the other dogs at the pound, I mean.â
âSure.â He gave the dog a few gentle pats, and let it snuggle with Steve for a bit. Although, if he were really fair with himself, he wouldâve admitted the truth - he was doing just what Tony didnât want, and Steve was doing the exact same thing: they were getting too attached.
Sighing, Bruce decided to grab a snack in the kitchen to try and maintain his distance. Otherwise itâd just hurt that much more the next day.
**
At two am Tony startled awake, heart pounding wildly between his ribs.
âYâright?âÂ
Tony allowed himself a smile before briefly running a hand through Bruceâs hair. âFine, Brucie Bear. JustâŚa nightmare.â He rustled back the covers and tucked his guys back in. The dream was bad enough that going back to sleep wasnât really in the cards.
Steve yawned. âYou want company?â
âNah.â He gave Steve a gentle peck on the lips. âJust gonna head down to the lab for a bit. Take my mind off it.â
âYâsure?âÂ
Tony smiled as Bruce poked his head from under the covers, squinting across the room while sporting a wild case of bed-head. âIâm sure. Iâll probably be back around breakfast and yâknow. Take a half-day from work or something.â
âTonyââ
He held up his hand and headed for the door, brooking no further argument. âBack to sleep, guys. It happens. Iâll be fine.â He sensed their disquiet but gave both what he hoped was a soothing grin before exiting their bedroom. To be honest he was glad they didnât join him; the nightmare had been about losing them, and not being able to protect them. Same old song and dance. But seeing them wouldâve ramped up his anxiety, and they really didnât need to be nervous for him either.Â
Stifling a yawn Tony headed for the kitchen to make a cup of coffee, but stilled his tracks when he heard a soft skritch skritch coming from somewhere in the house. He was immediately on alert, and headed for the kitchen for the largest knife in the drawer. âJarvis,â he rasped, âsomeoneâs in the house. Gently wake up Steve and Bruce, but go with protocol alpha-two-ninerââ
âSir,â Jarvis interrupted. âI believe the noise may be the dog.â
âWhat?â He shook his head, not really listening. How the hell did they get in? He made the penthouse foolproof. He grabbed a bread knife, then dropped it after spying the 12-inch butcherâs knife. No. The place was supposed to be safe. Even Natasha couldnâtâ
âSir,â Jarvis said more insistently. âThe dog Dr. Banner brought home. Itâs in the bathroom, and currently pawing the bathroom door. I detect you, Doctor Banner, Captain Rogers, and one dog in your immediate vicinity. There is no one else.â
âTheâŚdog?
âYes, sir.â
Tony felt his knees weaken and he tossed the knife back into the drawer. âThe pain in the ass mutt. Of course it is. The littleââ
Skritch skritch skritch
âYeah, sure. Scare me to death, and now you want out. Well, sorry, youâre in dog jail, but you deserve it, you little monster.â
Skritch skritch skritchâ
âYip!â
âShh, youâre gonna wake âem up, god dammitââ
âYip!â SKRITCH SKRITCH SKRITCH
Tony shuffled to the bathroom door, all the while making shushing noises. âQuiet down in there,â he grumbled. âYouâre gonna wake up everyone. Youâve gotta wait âtil morning.â
Tony made a face. âShush, shut it! Look, if I let you out, do you promise to keep quiet?â
Silence.
âYeah. Thatâs what I thought.â Swearing and shaking his head, he opened the door a crack and against his better judgment. The dog immediately nosed the rest of the door opened and circled Tonyâs legs before trying to root out where his other playmates had gone.
âOhh, no you donât,â Tony muttered. He picked it up, and noticed with a frown that it was pretty tiny. And thin. âWe should let Steve feed you,â he said, chuckling. âHeâll have you waddling in no time.â
Tony expected the dog to struggle more, but it had relaxed in his arms, despite carrying it around like a football. âGettinâ comfy, huh? Well, fine. Why donât you and I watch some tv, to keep you out of trouble.
No way was he getting used to it. Nope. Wasnât happening. But the dog wasâŚpretty soft, and comforting. And it had begun calming down, once he held it and pet it a few times.
Tony snuggled into the front roomâs couch, and turned on the tv. He had it on low, so it wouldnât disturb Bruce or Steve, and he ended up nestling the dog in the crook of his elbow. âThis is a one-time deal, understand?â He craned his neck so he could stare at it. âSo donât get comfortable.âÂ
The dog simply sighed at him and gave him a look that could melt the sternest of hearts. Or even metal ones. But Tonyâd stay firm. No dogs, that was his rule, and he meant it.
âYeah, yeah,â he grumbled. Just go to sleep.â As if it understood, it lay its muzzle on Tonyâs stomach. Tony kept petting it, hoping it would keep keep quiet until dawn. After all, he wasnât going to get any more sleep.
**
Steve was the first up, as he usually was, before the seven am alarm. No Tony, but he knew that; Tony had planned on staying up in the lab, or something.Â
He put on his workout gear, then headed for the kitchen for a good protein meal before working out. Heâd discovered long ago that a decent meal before a workout helped balance his metabolism, at least somewhat.
On his way there, though, he heard a long, honking snore. Tony, he thought, fighting down a small laugh. Figures he wouldâve crashed on the couch. Maybe it was better than the lab, though, considering all the dangerous chemicals around there.
Steve peeked over the couch expecting to see Tony drooling into his arm, but was more surprised to see their little house guest up on all four paws, steadying itself on Tonyâs abdomen.
âHeeey there, sweet pea,â he whispered, and he instantly took the dog off Tonyâs belly. Tony snorted a little in his sleep and frowned, but didnât wake.
Steve shook his head, looking between the dog and Tony. âYeah, he can protest all he likes. I see the truth.â Maybe Tony changed his mind? Steve hoped maybeâŚwell. Best not to get his hopes up. Maybe Tony needed the company but he might sing a different tune once he woke.
âYou hungry?â
The dog wagged itâs tail, and gave Steve a small, hesitant lick on his chin. âYeah, okay. Letâs get you something, then have you do your business. It wonât help matters if you make a stinky, and someone steps in it.â
After placing down the dog food Bruce had ordered yesterday, the man himself came lumbering into the kitchen, yawning and scratching his belly. Steve had to give him a lingering smile - Bruceâs pajama top and bottoms were a bit too snug, giving Steve a wonderful view of his tummy and love handles.Â
âMmm,â Steve muttered. He couldnât help himself, and he pulled Bruce into a fierce hug. âMorninâ, Muffin.âÂ
Bruce stopped short of squawking, since he was barely awake, but snuggled into Steveâs warm arms while chuckling to himself. âYou nearly knocked me over. You know how not-awake I am, first thing in the morning.â
âDonât care.â Steve sighed into his neck and let his hands wander further south, where he could give Bruceâs pudge a gentle pinch. Â âNeeded my morning snuggle.â
Bruce accepted it with a resigned sigh, but he loved it, despite how handsy Steve got in the morning. Changing subjects, he gestured to the floor with his chin. Â âHowâs our temporary house guest doing?â
Steve let his gaze linger at Bruce a half-second, then let go to pet the dog. It seemed in the zone with its food, and Steve didnât feel like disturbing it, but itâs coat was so soft. âPretty well, I think. And youâd never guess where I found it this morning.â
Bruce moaned a little. âOh, hell. Did it get out and make a mess?â
âNo, I donât think so. But it was sleeping on Tonyâs chest.â
âReally?â He blinked in disbelief, and stared at the dog. âAnd he let it?â
Steve shrugged. âI guess. He was out cold when I passed by the TV.â
âInteresting.â Bruce tapped his chin.Â
Steve glanced at him with a small smile. âYou thinking what Iâm thinking?â
âIf youâre thinking we might have a new dog, then yes.â
**
All three of them ended up taking the dog to the vet, with Tonyâs protests becoming less and less firm the more the dog snuggled up to him in the car. At the vet they realized the poor dog had been abused, but itâsheâdidnât have any lasting damage, fortunately. And apart from a small cold, she was in remarkably good condition.
Tonyâs first name for her, âMonster,â was of course vetoed by both Steve and Bruce. âAlthough,â Bruce said, thoughtfully, âRemember the wifeâs name from the Munsters?â
âLily?â
âYeah. Lily.â
They all agreed âLilyâ was perfect.
Tony realized taking Lily for romps in the dog parks helped his anxiety some, and Bruce welcomed Lilyâs calming personality when he felt his own anxieties peaking. Her presence seemed to calm them all down, and she almost had a preternatural ability to sense when any of them felt out of sorts, or panicky, or depressed. Tony thought she had the innate ability to become a service dog, though Bruce just figured she cared about the three of them so much, that she could share her love equally, whenever needed.
And apart from that first night of tiny-dog yapping, she was remarkably quiet.
And thatâs how Lily the orphan came to be part of the Rogers-Banner-Stark clan.
What would happen if Tony and Bruce swapped bodies due to magic????
((Oh dear fluffy Lord, anon - I couldnât stop writing this one. So itâs a nearly 9K monster, and Iâll probably keep on editing it for mistakes âtil the day I die because I am a problematic child. But here it is, below the cut. Enjoy! :D))
I think theyâd bothâŚtreat the incident like scientists. Maybe (Guest starring: Stephen Strange!).

It was supposed to revise Tonyâs AI data transference programs..
Something high end, something Bruce would agree to. Something that could have fantastic implications for neurological disorders and, well, side bonus the ability to âtrade thoughtsâ (or so Tony said; Bruce was less sure about that part).
But theyâd just begun with preliminary tests and hadnât expected any real world applicationsâŚuntil some âdemonâ from Doctor Strangeâs house of horrors decided to terrorize midtown. And wasnât that just ducky, to go chasing a live, six-foot World of Warcraft beast that made no sense on a good day, but definitely not on Friday at 4:30 pm.
âThis is your damn dirty imp, Strange,â Tony growled through the coms. âWhy arenât you here to catch it? Whyâs it now suddenly our job?â
âBecause itâs the only one left on earth,â Tony heard, âand Iâm trying to keep the rift shut so the others donât spill out.â He really didnât like Strangeâs eerie echo in his helmet; the mystic was using some of his mumbo-jumbo to communicate because he was off-world, or something.
âThat, and Iâm also on the astral plane.â
âOh, yeah. Right. Of course.â Tony hoped Strange could see his eyes rolling through his armor. âAnd stop listening to my thoughts, will ya? Thatâs justâŚcreepy. Anyway. Iâve got eyes on your pet. Itâs headed for Central Park.â
âDid you find the thumb drive at my apartment?â
âBruce did. Â He radioed me five minutes ago, that heâd cobbled together the program for the stasis field per your instructions, and heâs waiting for me to bring back your pet.â Tony watched with narrowed eyes as the creature caused two car collisions and a businessman stampede, before it winked out of existence, and suddenly appeared a few klicks south from its previous location.
ShitâŚHe needed to wrap it up yesterday.Â
âManhattan has leash laws for a reason, Strange.â
âI apologize, they all came through the rift rather unexpectedly, and with their abilitiesââ
âNah, nah, nope. Donât wanna hear it,â Tony said, zooming past a surprised lady walking a cat. âIâve had enough weird magic in my life, and I donât want any more. Just tell me how to catch the fucking thing and spare the commentary.â
Tony swore he heard the mystic snort. âVery well. Did you create the tractor beam?â
âIf youâre asking if I created a gravitational pull by redesigning my tech, then yes. Tractor beam? Bitch, please. That is so 60â˛s Star Trek.â
âFine,â Strange said, ignoring Tonyâs quip. âThen as soon as youâre over the demon, use yourâŚbeam âthingâ--â Tony sighed ââand keep it from touching any space. It can teleport, but only if itâs touching something solid first.â
âWhich explains why no oneâs been able to catch it.â
âExactly. So you have to be careful, donât let it hear you coming. And do not, under any circumstances, let it touch you.â
âIâm not stupid, Strange. Well. Not as stupid as some self-proclaimed Harry Potter, letting his pet escape and terrorize Manhattan.â
âJust get the creature, Stark.â
Tony laughed a little in his head. Served Strange right, for the hell heâd put them through.
***
The hard part, funny enough, wasnât even catching it. Once it saw Central Park it froze in its tracks, and Tony was able to fly over it, and contain it in his grav-field. It struggled a little and tried scraping a clawed toe across the asphalt, but Tony flew a little higher so it couldnât get near the ground. âStay still, ya little rodent,â he muttered to it.
But once he got to the helipad of the tower, he had to change directions in a rather awkward way in order to keep it from touching the ground. âBruce,â he said, switching the audio to the labâs feed. âHow close is Strangeâs stasis field to the window?â
Pause. âTonyâŚplease no.â
âGot to, Brucie Bear. This thing is spitting some kind of curse at me and you know what youâre like at four AM when we have an Avengerâs emergency? This thing is worse than you. So, yeah. Window, if you please.â
And by some kind of curse, he meant that this ugly mofo had some kind of acid spit that was reacting with his armor and causing his suit to emit weird fumes, enough to make him dizzy even with the filters going at high speed. Which was probably reason number one why Strange told him not to touch it. âYou got it?â
Tony heard a quiet grunt, and the left rear emergency lab bay window opened at a crawling speed. âHave you ever attempted flying through this? Itâs not exactlyâŚlarge.â
âBruce, honâ, when fully opened itâs large enough to fit two of you, side by side. Iâd call that pretty large.â
âVery funny,â Bruce muttered. But Tony already knew he was kidding. âGo ahead. Ease yourself, and Mutanus the Devourer through. But be careful, dammit.â
Tony was close enough to see Bruceâs worried face, and he nodded at him. âLike threading a needle. But for your safety, step a little further back. Iâm gonna have to come in pretty hot and at a weird angle, to keep this thing from touching anything.â
âWhatâ? Why?â
But Tony had already begun calculating his sideways angle, and was coming in even before Bruce finished his thought. âIâm gonna try âthrowingâ it into the field. Get ready to catch.â
âWhat?!â
Bruce said he was terrible at improvisation, but he really wasnât. Not when it counted. So when Tony hoisted up his hands and used not-so-gentle force to thrust the demon from his gravity well (where it went flying, just like the end of a triple-play to home base), Bruce only swore twice. And seconds before the thing bounced off the floor, Bruce had adjusted the electromagnetic cage for Tonyâs speed and trajectory, and had their little monster safe and secure in a cube of solitude.
âSee? No problem.â Tony lifted his faceplate just as Bruce whirled on him angrily.
âTonyâ! What if Iâd missed? I almost didnât compensate in time!â
âBut you did, honâ. Thatâs the important part.â
Bruce snorted angrily as Tony went in for a kiss. As their lips connected, he ignored the nagging feeling in the back of his head. Iâm getting as paranoid as Bruce, he thought fuzzily, but he didnât mind; Bruceâs kiss was knocking him senseless, like a bottle of cheap rotgut.
âTony,â Bruce mumbled dreamily. âWaitâŚsome-somethingâsââ
âMm. Love you too, Brucie Bear. Need to get Steve down here, and start on the main course.â
âNo, ah. I mean.â He shook his head slowly, and Tony felt his own head spinning. Maybe spinning too much.
Wait. Oh, shit, the bastardâs fumesâ
âSirs, Iâm detecting an unknown contaminateââ
Tony had just enough energy, even as Bruce flopped heavily across him and knocked both of them unceremoniously to the floor. âJarvis,â he slurred. âProtocol 1-A. Now.â
âAlready in progress, SirsâŚâ
He fought against the darkness as hard as he could, but within seconds his vision grayed out.
***
âTony! Bruceâ!â
Bruce groaned low in his throat. Someone was calling his name, his and Tonyâs, but they sounded so far awayâŚand his head hurt. Like heâd beenâ
Shit.
âDidâŚI hurt anyone?â
âSir?â
Holy hell, his voice soundedâŚweird. But also familiar. Somehow. He was still facedown on the floor of his and Tonyâs lab (he could tell that much; one of Tonyâs bots had begun circling near him, as if in distress). But at least the lab floor, what he could see of it, seemed free of debris. A good sign; maybe Hulk made nice, for once.
Yeah. Right.
Blinking - because everything hurt, and he wasnât sure if moving would be a great idea, he said the one thing he hoped made sense.
âJarvis, status?â
âUnsure,â the AI said. And that was as strange a thing as heâd ever heard. Jarvis was never unsure or uncertain of his data. âThe contaminates that previously saturated the lab have dissipated, but Iâm detecting high levels of it in your bloodstream, and in Doctor Bannerâs.â
âYou mean me and Tonyâs.â
The AI paused for too long. âDoctorâŚBanner?â
âYes, Jarvis,â Bruce said. He frowned; he wasnât wearing his glasses, but his eyesight seemed okay. Jarvis, however, was apparently malfunctioning.
âTony!â
Bruce lifted his head, finally hearing Steve, and saw his panic-stricken face through the glass. He made a slow motion to sit up, finding it both easy and hard at the same time. He felt off, but maybe it was whatever they were hit with. It definitely made his voice sound funny. He made a small gesture to Steve to mollify him, but he wasnât about to expose the man to whatever he and Tony got hit with.
Heâd deal with Steve in a few minutes, after his head quit spinning.
âDoctor Banner,â Jarvis began slowly. âThereâs been an accident in the lab. Apparently Mr. Stark returned with a contaminate, at the same moment you restrained Dr. Strangeâs creature. Both you and he were exposed to it.â
âYeah,â Bruce thought muzzily. Where was Tony, anyway? It still hurt too much to move a lotâŚâsome kinda knock-out accelerant? Is the creature secure?â
âThe results of the gas seem to have mollified the creature, somewhat. It appears to be asleep. However, Dr. Banner, an alarming complication has also occurred.â
âHm?â
Still woozy, Bruce glanced around, and saw an arm from a lab coat peeking around the edge of an upended table, and his glasses (unbroken, fortunately) somewhere near the coat. Had Tony put on a lab coat? Odd. He didnât normallyâŚ
âTonyâ?â
He scooted unsteadily towards the glasses and picked them up, but he still felt out of sorts. âTony, are youââ
Bruce saw the figure on the floor. Then he did a comical double take at himself before scrambling back with a half-yelp, half-gasp. And when he caught his reflection in a stainless steel cabinet, an honest-to-god, seven-year-old girly scream leapt from his throat.
***
Tony was fairly sure heâd shoved Bruce away in time to secure Strangeâs creature of the night, but he wasnât exactly thinking on all four cylinders. Still, despite what he knew his brain was telling him, he wasnât in any huge rush to wake up. His limbs and body felt weighted, and exhaustion pulled every part of him into oblivion.
âTony! Bruceâ!â
That sounded like Steve, but Tony really couldnât be bothered. Not yet. The heaviness in his limbs dragged him further down, and he felt himself sinking deep, intoâŚsomething else. Heâd rest for a little longer. Just a few more minutes. Just until the world stopped hurting and spinning. He probably shouldâve been more alarmed, but didnât completely come to until he heard a loud gasp, followed by a creepy screech. WhichâŚsorta sounded like what he sounded like, when he found that spider in the bathroom. But he wasnât gonna think about that.
âJesus,â he mumbled. He attempted to pull himself up, but his whole body felt like he was trying to wrestle hundred-pound sacks of flour. And he mustâve hit his head, because his vision was too blurry - he felt and sounded like he was underwater.
âStarkâŚStark!â
Strange. That was Doctor Strange, in his head.
âOh my GodâTony!â
AndâŚwhoâ? Was Strange throwing his voice around the room? Holy fuck, it was too goddamn early for this otherworldly shit.
âStrangeâ?â
No. No, he didnât sound like him at all. He sounded likeâ
âTonyâ?!â
He slowly shook his head back and forth as a hand attempted to grab his arm. God, why did he feel like lead? After effect from the fumes, maybe? âYeah, mâokay, Iâmââ
He looked up. He couldnât see. Someone fumbled someâŚeyeglasses on his face? He blinked, suddenly seeingâ
âGaah! Fuck!â
âI know, I know! What the hell happened?â
âHe looked down at himself, at his body. Then he realized why he felt like he was carrying around huge sacks of flour. Because he was.
He was in Bruceâs body.
BâŚBruceâ?â Expression hardening, he thought at lightning speeds, trying to piece together any answers.
âStarkâŚthere?â
âStrangeâ? JustâŚhold on. Hold on a secondââ
âYouâre damn right itâs strange!â
âNo, no. I meanââ Â He sighed heavily and looked up, watching as Bruce in his body, nervously wrung his hands and chewed his bottom lip. It was weird, seeing himself in someone elseâs body. But he couldnât think about that right now. Couldnât think of anything but just what needed to be done, in whatever way they could do it.
âBruce, honâ,â he said, regretting the deep timbre of Bruceâs voice, with his words. âCalm down, okay? SomethingâŚsomething happened. I think itâs because of that thing I brought back. It was givinâ off some toxic gunk, andââ
âGoddamn it, open this fucking door!â
âSteve,â they said, locking eyes on each other.
âOkay,â Tony sighed. He shook his head, trying to clear it, but it wasnât easy. Not at all. It was all too much, and it hurt. âJarvis, are we clean from any other fumes?â
âThere are no other contaminates detected, and the creature appears to be hibernating nowâŚsirs,â the AI said slowly. Tony realized then that this was probably tough for the AI to understand, too.
âGood. Bruce, use the manual override to open the lab door, but donât say anything to Steve yet. Just open the door, and let him come over to where I am.â
He grunted. âJesus Christ, Bruce. I honestly donât think I can stand. You really are a huge dude, babe. Not that I care, but moving mi-i-ght be an issue right now.â
Bruce smiled nervously and half-shrugged. Seeing the lack of confidence in his body, was too freaky. Â âUm, Iâm sorryââ
Tony shook hisâBruceâsâhead. âNo. Donât say that. And donât worry, weâll figure something out. Just get Steve. I think Iâm still connected with Strange, so maybe weâll get more answers from him.â
***
It took an hour to get things sorted and Steve still kept giving them side glances, as if he didnât completely believe theyâd body swapped; not that Bruce truly believed it himself. But he had to; he felt too manic and too wired to be in anything but Tonyâs body.
He made a face. Tony seriously needed to cut back on his coffee intake, if he felt like this all the time.
âSoâŚthis is Doctor Strangeâs mess?â Steve began slowly.
âMostly,â Tony said. Bruce shivered watching Tonyâs characteristic glare, beneath his own wireframes, but they had other concerns besides viewing each other in the othersâ body. Because he wasnât exactly sure what would happen if it happened.
âWhat else did he say?â
âNot a lot,â Tony sighed. âHe started fadinâ on me, so we mayâve lost our connection for now.â
Steve sighed heavily. âGreat.â
âIt is what it is, Steve. Strange is tuned to my actual thoughts, but heâs having problems tuning in. Probably âcause heâs in his damn âmystic realm,ââ Tony airquoted. He caught Bruce and Steveâs skepticism, and waved off their expressions. âYeah, I know, I donât get it either. I got this much from him, though: This imp thing was attempting to swap bodies, using its toxic spit as a catalyst. And it almost worked, because its stupid, Â timey-wimey saliva swaps souls, or some shit. But with Bruce in the mix, the fumes ended up swapping Bruce and me instead, and the creature stayed in its own body. Its trick backfired.â
Steve rolled his eyes at Tony.
âHey, donât shoot the messenger, thatâs just what Strange said! Itâs fucking nuts, I get it. But it happened, so fuck me if I know what to do.â
âTony,â Bruce said softly, calming him down.
Steve first stared at Tony in Bruceâs body, then Bruce in Tonyâs, and finally pinched the bridge of his nose. âIâve got a headache.â
âJoin the club,â Tony growled. He tried folding his arms, but was having problems doing it across Bruceâs massive chest.
Bruce sighed and ran a hand across his chin, and made a face when he touched Tonyâs beard. âDid Strange give any indication on how to reverse the process?â
âHe kept fadinâ in and out, but I think he has an idea - a crazy, mystical one. But I think he has to be here in the flesh, and heâs not sure how long heâll be. Time flows differently, he said. What might be a minute for us could be a week for him, and vice-versa. So he might be here in an hour, orââ
âOr in weeks,â Bruce said miserably.
âYou got it. Or longer.â
âI canât wait weeks!â
âYou? Hell, Bruce. I think Iâd end up starving you to death.â And they all suddenly heard Bruceâs stomach rumble. Loudly. âSee?â
Bruce sighed heavily. âWell. If only that were the least of our problems.â
Tony and Steve looked up warily, but Tony got it first. He gulped, and Bruce found it funny, seeing his own Adamâs apple bob comically. âOhhhh, fuck meâŚâ
âYeah. Itâs probably the reason you lost contact with Strange, too.â
âWhat?â Steve said, but then it hit him, and he tightly shut his eyes. âYou mean the Hulk.â
Bruce nodded and gestured to Tony. âThe body swap doesnât change the fact that Hulkâs presence is still in my body. But if Tony loses control, it wonât be my consciousness keeping Hulk at bay - itâll be Tonyâs alter-ego.â Bruce nibbled his lip. âIâŚI donât know whatâll go down if that happens, but we have to stop it from occurring at all costs. I think, somehow, weâve been lucky that the body swap weakened us a little. But I donât know whatâll happen once our bodies recharge.
âSo Tony, youâll have to remain calm. At all times.â
âI know, Brucie,â he sighed, running his fingers through his hair. His curls. âI know. But I donât have a lid on it, not like you.â
Bruce smiled sadly. âNo one does. Until we figure something out or until Strange returns, itâs probably best if you stay in or near the Hulk containment pod.â
âAgreed,â Tony said, but he definitely wasnât happy about it.
âWell,â Steve said, with a sigh. âIâll stay down there with you. To keep you company.â
âAnd try and stop me, too,â Bruce said. âBetween the three of us, weâll figure something out that works, until Strange returns.â
***
A few hours later Tony wasnât any happier about staying confined than before, but at least Bruceâs deep breathing exercises werenât causing him to freak out any worse than before. Whether or not that was a good thing, he wasnât exactly sure.
âThatâs it,â Bruce murmured. âIn through the nose, out through the mouth.â
Okay, but no. âGod. Is that what I sound like? I swear, itâs no wonder I pissed off so many people. Thatâs the most grating noiseââ
âShh. Tony, take this seriouslyââ
âI wish I could, but câmon. YouâI look silly. I canât take myself seriously.â
Bruce opened an eye and glared at him. âDo you want the Hulk to tear up your basement?â
âNo, of course not. ButâŚBruce. Dude. When was the last time you ever saw me meditate?â
Bruce made a face. âAbout as often as Iâve said the word, âdude.â Itâs just as weird for me, Tony, and Iâm ready to climb the walls in your hyperactive body. Why didnât you tell me you felt like this?â
âBrucie,â Tony sighed. âIâm used to it. Probably the way youâre used to being hungry like, 24/7, and not snapping at everyone every five minutes for a burger, or some shit. Speaking of,â he said, glaring through the Hulk-proofed plexiglas, âwhere the hell is Steve with our lunch?â
âHeâs coming. Be patient.â
Tony jammed his hands in Bruceâs lab coat pockets. âYeah, well, he needs to pick up the paceâŚâ Frowning, his fingers rummaged around the pockets, and he pulled something out. âHel-lo,â he purred, discovering a jumbo-sized candy bar. âWhatâs this?â
âOh, right.â Tony watched as his cheeks reddened, from Bruceâs blushing.âI ah. I keep those in my lab coats sometimes.â
Tony had already torn off half the wrapper and was shoving the candy in his mouth, even before Bruce quit talking. âOhh. Ohhhh...â
Swallowing, Bruce watched in fascination as he watched his body actually shiver. âOh my God, Bruce,â Tony said, mouth still full. âFuckinâ A. Why didnât you say anything? Holy shitââ
Bruce frowned, and swiped a glob of chocolate that had dripped down Tonyâs - his - chunky chin. âAbout what?â
âYour taste buds.â Tony moaned, and Bruce felt his jaw go slack. Was thatâŚwas that what he looked like? No wonder Steve and Tony got off on his expression, for lack of another term. His body adjusted to the sight, and his hormones - Tonyâs borrowed hormones - were pumping a lot of blood, down south.
âI could have sex right now. Does everything taste like this, Bruce?â
He shrugged shyly. âNot sure. MaybeâŚ? Letâs just say Iâm used to it.â
Tony delicately licked his fingers. âOr maybe Iâm hungry. Either way,â he sighed softly. âIâm glad I got to experience it. And I sure as hell am excited to try more.â
Bruce felt his apprehension rise. âTonyâŚâ
âWhat? Iâm not going to go crazy. But, seriously. Dude. You have amazing taste buds. Itâs like everythingâs ramped up, and wrapped in candy and bacon. Itâs worse than crack. Not that Iâve had crack, but stillââ
Bruce put a hand on his shoulder. âOkay, okay.â Bruce sighed softly, and met Tonyâs eyes. âI never said anything. But maybe I shouldâve.â He looked Tony slowly up and down. âBut I get what you guys see now. ItâsâŚâ
âBabe, donât say itââ
ââfascinating.â
âUgh. He said it.â Tony shook his head fondly, âOriginal series Spock is so overquoted.â
Bruce chuckled at their old argument, but didnât argue the point. Instead he reached over to squeeze his stomach. The sensation was amazing with Tonyâs fingers; he was all soft and doughy, with so much give. Bruce kept prodding himself but smiled when Tony moaned a little. âI want this back, yâknow,â he sighed. âWatching you enjoy so much of life makes me want my body back. Makes me want to doâŚthings to you and Steve.â
âMm,â Tony growled deeply, sending another shock to Bruceâs (Tonyâs) groin. âYou little minxââ
âItâs your hormone levels,â Bruce interrupted. âYouâre talking about my taste buds, but your sexual feelings areâŚâ
âAreâ? YeahâŚ?â
âYeah.â
âUm.â Tony saw it, then. The same gleam in his eye that his past - and present - lovers have either run from, or embraced. âYou know,â Bruce said. âWe couldâŚah. Probably make the most of this, until Strange returns? I mean, itâs weird, butââ
Tony caught on immediately. âWe need to explore it. You know, see it from the opposite perspective. For scientific research.â
âItâll probably weird out Steve, though.â
âSo he watches this time.â
Bruce licked his lips, which looked absolutely decadent across Tonyâs goatee. Â âOnce, maybe. But weâve gotta find a way to swap back. Like, soon.â
Tony grinned like a Cheshire cat across Bruceâs borrowed face. âOne turn. Then we try fixing it, with or without Strange.â
âAgreed.â
They almost got started right then and there, had Steve not arrived just in time with lunch.
âI canât believe it,â he whined, holding out a food bag. Tony grabbed it from him immediately and rooted around in the bag before plucking out a huge wrapped hamburger. âYou two were going to go at it. Without me.â
Bruce looked down guiltily while Tonyâs decadent murmurs over his burger kept distracting him.  âI-It wasnât on purpose, Steve. We just gotâŚlost in the moment.â
âSorta like getting lost in this burger,â Tony said, mouth full. He took three large bites and swallowed quickly, while digging in the greasy food bag for his second round. âI think Iâm having sex with your taste buds, Bruce. Hm. Cap, you get any other condiments?â
Bruce smirked at Tony. âCareful. I donât eat hamburgers every day. It may seem like I can put it all away fast - andâŚwell. I can. But the stomachaches from eating too quickly are also very real.â
âCâmon guysââ
Tony piped up while grabbing some dipping sauce to go with some french fries. âDoubt we wouldâve started to be honest with ya, Steve, âcause Iâm too hungry. Bruce, man. Youâve gotta tell us when youâre starving. We can always hold off from sex. You should eat first, yâknow?â
âMm,â Bruce murmured. But he didnât say much more. Instead he cautiously took Steveâs hand. âWe also werenât sure if this would be uncomfortable for you. Because weâre not exactly us.â
âYeahâŚI know.â But Steveâs eyes were hooded as he witnessed Tony choking down his food, like a ravenous dog. Bruce had to tug Steveâs hand, to get his attention.
âHey. One more thing, and Iâve gotta ask,â Bruce sighed. âSteve. Hey, Steve - listen. This is important to me, okay?â
âHmâ?â Steve snapped back, and a small blush began disappearing from his cheeks. âSorry, TâI mean Bruce. Dammit, sorry. This is tough.â
âI know it is,â Bruce said gruffly. Steve gave him his full attention now, and Bruce thought Steve was doing fairly well, considering Tony was finishing up his second burger. âIâmâŚa little worried by your expression, and Iâve seen it a couple times in the past hour. Itâs not just the kink, is it, Steve?â
Steveâs mouth fell open and he was about to protest, when Tonyâs moan shoved down his retort. A choked squawk tumbled from Steveâs lips instead..
âThatâsâŚunfortunate,â Bruce murmured, believing he had his answer.
âNo, Bruce. Stop.â Steve tsked and took both of his hands, and looked - really looked - deep into Bruceâs borrowed eyes. âThere. There you are. Thereâs the man I fell in love with. I can see him, peeking through.â
Bruce sighed heavily. âI want to believe you, but the way youâve just actedââ
Steve tightened his grip. âBruce,â he admitted, âyour body is a piece of the puzzle, sure. But I could watch porn on the internet, if thatâs all I cared about. I could watch headless bodies gorge and stuff themselves. I could tune in weekly, for weigh-ins. Â I could read fiction and fantasize.
âBut, Bruce,â he said softly. âNone of those people would be you. The sorta, kinda shy introverted scientist, who makes me laugh, and believe in myself. The guy whoâs part of the total package, while Tonyâs the other part. The one who helps me realize my worth in this confusing world. Thing is,â he whispered. âI know youâre you. I fell in love with you. And if god forbid, if something happened, and you and Tony had to stay like this, yeah, Iâd hate it. But Iâd figure out how to deal because I love both of you, different bodies notwithstanding.â
A watery grin tugged at Bruceâs - Tonyâs - lips. âYou mean it?â
âOf course I do, Bruce.â He pulled the man close to his chest and hugged him. Bruce shut his eyes a little, reveling in the close contact. Itâd been awhile since heâd felt either Tony or Steveâs arms completely encircling him. He was way too big these days for either of them to hug him so closely.
âAh-hem,â they heard, and both turned to see Tony wiping off his (Bruceâs) chin with a napkin. âNot that Iâm jealous, here, butâŚIâm jealous. Hurry up and eat up, before I eat up for you. âCause we got some sexinâ to do.â
Steve made a face. âThat soundsâŚreally wrong. Your body with Tonyâs words do not go well together.â
âBut itâll feel right, once we get started,â Tony said, and the brow-waggle (again) looked terrible on Bruceâs features.
Bruce shook his head. âCâmon, Steve. Best not to let all that energy go to waste. But,â he said, suddenly serious. âWe should take it slow, so nothing goes wrong.â
***
So of course something went wrong.
Of course.
Heâd been so. Fucking. Carelessâ!
Bruce gripped his newly-slimmed hips and angrily paced the lab. âNothing?â
Tony shrugged and shook his head while tugging the hem of Bruceâs extra large undershirt. He felt far too exposed, since a good portion of his (Bruceâs) belly peeked from beneath, and he opened his mouth to say something about the snugness. But after catching the fury in Bruceâs glare (and how scary was that shit, seeing his own rage reflected back), Tony shut his mouth. Heâd bug Bruce later, after they swapped back. âNo,â he muttered. âStrange isnât âpicking upâ or whatever. Our connectionâs still out.â
Bruce dug his fingers into his sides until they began aching. He reached for his face, searching for the glasses that no longer framed his face. Knowing they werenât there made him even angrier. âI fucked up. I shouldâveââ
âNo. Donât do it, Bruce.â Tony came over and held out his arms, and Bruce sunk in. The sensation was like falling into a giant, absolutely heavenly, marshmallow. Bruce sighed, imagining he was in a super soft cloud.
Tony briefly pulled him back, forcing him to make eye contact. âWe all thought weâd be safe enough.â
âSteve paid the price, Tony!â
âIt was me this time, okay? Youâve got nothing to feel bad about. The Hulkââ Tony paused as a flash of memory caught him off-guard, but he shoved it down. âThe Hulk came out of me, Bruce. He body slammed Steve a few times, and then went back toâŚwherever he goes. But I couldâve said I felt off or funny; I chose not to. I put us in danger.â
Bruce shook his head. âBut I knew better, Tony. I definitely did. I was so fucking caught up in the moment, I didnâtâ.â
Tony cut him off. âAll three of us were caught up in the moment, Bruce.â Tony allowed his thicker lips to twist, and they turned to a salacious grin. It looked more obscene than usual, on Bruceâs ordinarily placid face.âWe had some fun while it lasted, though.â
âThatâs notâŚthatâs not anywhere near funny, Tony.â Bruce felt himself vibrating with fury, and it was an emotion he seldom allowed. But he could now, being in Tonyâs body. âFuck you, he couldâve been killed! Hell, if I hadnât gotten us out in time, it couldâve killed you and me! We donât know whatâll happen if one of us gets hurt, or dies in the othersâ body, orââ Bruceâs breath hitched. âWe canât wait for Strange. We have to try changing back, right now.â
Tony folded his arms across his chest, and stared him down with Bruceâs glasses half down his nose. âOh, okay. So fine, Bruce. Show me where in the lab we have that special, super sciency soul-transferring equipment, then.â
Bruce glared at him, his eyes as determined as they were angry. âWe do. Remember our AI data transference project?â
âWhoa, whoa. Â Waitaminute. Slow the fuck down, Banner.â Tony held up his hands. âWe havenât fucking tested it. Â And even then, it was only going to be used for complicated AI systems. Are you honestly telling that me, that you want the first, and only human trials to be us? Are you out of your damn fucking mind?â
âYep, but to be truthful, both of us are, arenât we?â Tony rolled his eyes at Bruceâs dry quip and watched as he rolled his sleeves and headed for their lab. âBut Iâm not sure how much time we have left. We have the machine, but we donât have Strange. Maybe we can synthesize a vial of that knock-out potion from the creatureââ
âYeah, um. WaitâŚâ Tony hesitated, and Bruce finally slowed in his tracks.
âWhat?â
Tony sighed. âI think youâre letting my energy fuel your reactions and itâs a little scary to see up close, but I get it now. The whole, âact first and think laterâ schtick was increased by my physicality.â
Bruce snorted and bounced on the balls on his feet. âMaybe. But Iâm still me, Tony, just faster. And I donât think Iâm wrong about the swap capabilities of our project.â
âBut if you are wrong, we could be trapped in some weird limbo state.â
âTrue. The risks are real. But so is the Hulk.â
Tony shook his head, but rumbled through a sigh. Truthfully, he felt the Hulk pushing at his skull, threatening to take him over - and wanting to, since his little taste of freedom. He hadnât told Bruce, but he didnât think he could control Hulk for much longer.
Besides, he kind of owed it to Steve, who was currently sleeping off a good thrashing.
âOkay,â he murmured. âBut we need some failsafes. Let me program JARVIS so we can take it nice and slow.â
Which werenât words he ever expected to leave his lips, any time soon.
***
Steve woke exhausted and a bit sore, and somewhat disappointed that his lovers werenât surrounding him. Maybe it was a bit petulant of him, but he liked when he awoke in Tony and Bruceâs arms. He understood, kinda, because they had one lover that trumped them all - he just didnât like it.
So when he shuffled down to the lab (limping, because he didnât mention the healing ankle fracture; Bruce didnât need to know that), he smiled sadly. Knowingly. Yep. Again, the fourth member of their trio that needed no introduction. Steve would never fall in love with science, like they did. But heâd made peace with it.
âJARVIS,â he sighed. âWhatâre they working on?â
âModifications to the sirsâ data transference project,â JARVIS immediately answered. The AI saw no need to lie, but Steve frowned anyway. JARVIS correctly intuited his pause, and further explained. âTheyâre attempting to replicate the body transference, from the demonic creatureâs chemical makeup.â
Steve felt his heart leap to his throat. âYou mean theyâre trying to bodyswap back? Without Strangeâs help?â
âApparently, Captain Rogers.â
DammitâŚnow he was steamed. How dare theyâ
âJARVIS, can you get me in there?â
âCertainly, Captain Rogers.â
***
âNo, no, Bruce. Thatâs notââ
âBut itâll work ifââ
âDammit if you just listen to me, youâdââ
âNo, because if you do that, weâre gonna have to moveââ
Steve put his thumb and forefinger in his mouth and blew, freezing Tony and Bruce in place.
âOw, man. Seriously?â Tony tugged his earlobe and fake-yawned. âYou seriously had to whistle at us?â
âSteve,â Bruce murmured. âYou couldâve just said our namesâŚâ
âNo I couldnât have,â he grumped. âBecause Iâm pissed. At both of you.â
They came up short, then. âWhy?â Bruce asked. Although the cute owlish act in Tonyâs body wasnât lost on Steve, he purposely lay his feelings aside.
âBecause. Youâre working on this bodyswapping thing. And itâs dangerous. But you didnât include me in any of your decisions.â
The two finally looked ashamed, but Steve wasnât done glaring at them.
âSorry,â Tony finally said. âWe got caught upââ
ââin the moment,â Steve finished for him. âI know you did. Like you always do, when youâre working. But we talked about this, didnât we? That we make decisions like this together? Especially when they concern all of us?â
Bruce scowled, noticing how Steve favored one leg over the other. âAre you okay?â
âDonât change the subject,â Steve barked, but Bruce eyed him warily. Steve knew he wouldnât pacify him long, but he only needed a few more minutes. âI think itâs a rotten idea that you arenât waiting for Strange, but I get it; youâre worried. But your worry might cause you to make dumb mistakes. Mistakes you canât afford.â
Tony and Bruce sighed in tandem. âYeah, we know,â Tony admitted, and Bruce gestured to Steve, while jutting his chin at a table. Grimacing, Steve hopped up, while Bruce bent down to check his ankle.
âWe have to work fast, Steve.â Tony puffed out his cheeks, which, admittedly, was adorable with Bruceâs frame, but stillâ
âWeâreâŚmerging.â
Steve looked confused as Bruce prodded his ankle. âWait, merging? What do you mean?â
âHe means weâre losing parts of ourselves,â Bruce said, while grabbing scissors, gauze, and athletic tape from a nearby cabinet. âWeâre discovering that our individual bodies are influencing our personality matrices. In other words, Tony has a lot of high energy, due to his chemical makeup, and so Iâm reacting to that. He, on the other hand, is responding to my body, and tends to beâŚâ
âSluggish,â Tony responded, without any self-effacing humor. âItâs true, though. I actually think before acting, for once.â He smiled, but his grin was a bit wan. âI think Bruce has always been sorta like that though, body notwithstanding.â He glanced at Bruce for confirmation, and the physicist nodded.
âUnfortunately, weâre on borrowed time, too. The Hulk is pushing hard, and I donât think we have more than a few days before something bad happens.â
Bruce nibbled his lip and slowly wrapped Steveâs ankle. âIf Hulk takes Tony over,â he said quietly, âthe switch back will be nearly impossible. A one-to-one personality switch is bad enough; add the Hulk, andââ
ââwe lose Tony,â Steve whispered.
Bruce swallowed, but neither he nor Tony said anything else. The room stayed silent, apart from a few computer beeps, while Bruce finished wrapping Steveâs ankle.
âThere,â Bruce murmured. âAll done. I would be angry at you for not telling us about your ankle, butâŚI suppose itâs tit-for-tat, since we didnât tell you our plans.â
âCall us even.â
âAnd call us needing to get back to this,â Tony grumbled. âWeâre gonna have to stay up for a few days straight to make sure it works.â
âLet me help,â Steve said, and the two scientists exchanged a look. âListen, Iâm not going to go anywhere anyway, and I refuse to let my best guys go at this without me being involved. I promise to stay out of your way, but get me up to speed, too. I wanna know whatâs going on, every step of the way. All or nothing, remember?â
Tony hid a small smile. âAll or nothing,â he agreed, while Bruce nodded.
***
Steve designated himself the official caretaker, and made sure neither Tony nor Bruce overworked themselves despite their borrowed time schedule. He also listened to their back and forth science gibberish with a critical ear; some of it went over his head, but some of itâŚhe could figure it out. Sometimes he caught things the scientists missed, and itâd fuel the fire anew.
âTony, could you send me your frontal lobe info? I have a few things I want to try.â
âCominâ your way.â Tony flicked his fingers, and a glowing chart hovered in front of Bruce. âAnd I will say, I see the appeal. I make an extremely dashing figure when Iâm playing with science.â
Bruceâs lip quirked. âWell, hopefully you can have your body back soon, so I can have the same pleasure.â He made a few quick notations, but his small smile faded. âIâm almost finished mapping my brain. But yours is gonna be a challenge.â
âThe Hulk?â
Bruce nodded. âThatâŚWell, Iâm not sure if we can allocate enough serum for the return transfer.â
âDo we really need both? Maybe if we worked without the gas?â
âNot sure.â Bruce made a sound between his teeth. âIt might seem like overkill, but we donât exactly know how the gas works, do we? The transference OS is supposed to function as a targeting site as the gas disperses. I donât think we can use one without the other and still have it work. I swear, thisâd be easier withoutâŚâ He blinked, and jerked up as if stung by a cattle prod. âWell, shit. Of course. Thatâs it, thatâs the answer.â
âWhat? Whatâre youââ Tony stopped short. âWait. Tell me youâre not considering what I think youâre considering.â
Bruce deliberately didnât look his way and wrote a few calculations on their shared workspace. âItâd solve a lot of issues, Tony.â
Tony quickly wiped away Bruceâs work, to stop him. âYou donât know how thatâll affect you! Or me, for that matter. We donât have time to guess.â
âHulk broke Steveâs leg, Tony,â he said, swallowing. âHeâs broken cities. People. Families. This could be our only chance.â
âNo.â Tony and Bruce turned, as Steve interrupted their argument with one, firm word. âIâve been listening to you both for the past twenty hours. And I get it. As much as Iâm not a science geckââ
âGeek,â Bruce gently corrected.
âGeek, I still understand. From what youâve been saying, the Hulk is a huge part of Bruceâs personality, hidden though he is. If you try taking him out of the equation, thereâs a good chance weâll lose a lot of Bruce too.â
âIâm willing to take that chance,â Bruce said, so softly that they almost didnât hear him. âFor the opportunity to do good again? To live without fear? Iâd take it.â
âOh, muffin,â Steve murmured. He limped over to Bruce and pulled his hand away from the screen while forcing him to look at him. âYou were already those things with the Hulk. And you have him under control, now. The thingsâŚthe good things youâre doing now are making up for the past. This world now? It canât live without a Hulk in it. It needs you and him.â
âIâŚâ Bruce shook his head. âThatâs not true. It will never be true. I canâtâhe-Iâll never make up for what weââ
âBuddy,â Tony interrupted. He struggled to his feet and stood by Bruceâs other side. âWe love you. All of you. And Steveâs right. I knowâŚâ he sighed and gently rubbed Bruceâs back. âI know it wonât make sense to you,  but I can feel how much of you is intertwined with Hulk. You two balance each other.â He tilted his head. âYou know how both of our personalities are mixing right now? You and Hulk already mixed it up. I can actually hear snippets of you in my head, right now. And itâs from him.â
Tony guided Bruce into his huge, borrowed body. The physicist twitched like a livewire, nervously holding back whatever emotions plagued him.
âI didnât want to say anything,â Tony whispered. âBut he misses you, Pooh bear. He wantsâŚhe wants to come home.â
Bruce barked out a sob and wiped away the sudden tracks down his face with a shaky hand, even as Steve squeezed his hand. âDammit, Tony,â he sniffed. âYouâre an emotional wreck.â
Tony huffed. âYeah, well. I would lie and say thatâs not me, but I know better. All or nothing, babe, okay?â
Bruce swallowed, and looked between the two men. They were both encouraging him, both rooting for him. How could he say no now? âOkay.â He nodded and fiercely wiped the remaining tears from his cheek. âYouâre right. Itâs all, or nothing.â
***
Near the forty hour mark they were all staring at a finished outline that would either put Bruce and Tony back in their original bodies, or irrevocably tear them apart.
âNo pressure,â Tony sighed.
âIs it good enough?â Steve cautiously glanced between Bruce and Tony, who both wore identical facial expressions. Steve didnât think that should scare him but maybe on an unconscious level, it did.
âI think it has to be,â Tony said, and Bruceâs acknowledgement was a slow, uncomfortable sigh.
âYeah.â
A sheen of sweat had broken across Tonyâs (well, Bruceâs) forehead, and they didnât need to say it, they were almost out of time: the Hulk was awake, aware, and impatient.
Steve swallowed. âWhat do you need me to do?â
âWear this,â Bruce said, handing Steve a respirator. âJARVIS will monitor vitals, but if anything happens we may need you to get close enough to pull us out. Iâm still not entirely sure how the gas works.â
Suddenly a small, strange chirrup caught their attention. As they turned, Strangeâs demon pet chirped again, staring at them through red, unblinking eyes.
âThatâs not bone-chilling or creepifying at all,â Tony muttered. âNot like it knows something we donât, right?â
âEven if it did,â Bruce sighed, âit doesnât matter. We still have to do this.â He glared at Tony. âYou donât have much longer. I know it.â
âNah. I got this. Fifteen, twenty minutes, easy.â
âThatâs what I thought.â
âThen letâs hurry,â Steve said. He motioned for the two to get ready, and they slowly stripped to their boxers. âYou ready?â
âReady as weâll ever be,â Tony said, laying on a cot theyâd acquired from Bruceâs lab. It bowed under his weight, but it still held. Steveâs hands shook as he attached the electrodes across all his vital points.
âTrust us,â Tony said, grabbing his arm. Steve nodded shakily, and went over to Bruce, in Tonyâs body.
Bruce motioned to the mask as Steve taped electrodes on him. âStrap that on tight, before we turn anything on. I was able to synthesize some of the creatureâsâŚmusk, but we never got the chance to test it. I donât know how powerful it is, or what itâll do.â
âI get it Bruce. And you may not realize it,â he muttered, pulling the respirator over his nose and mouth. âBut Iâve worn gas masks before. Just not as fancy.â
Bruce nodded, but he still looked the mask over, testing for issues, before Steve rolled his eyes and shoved him down. âGo to sleep, Bruce.â
He nestled Bruce and Tonyâs own breathing masks over their mouths. âBegin counting backwards,â he told them, Then he silently said a prayer before starting the data transference program, as well as the distilled knockout gas.

The first five minutes were routine, according to JARVIS. âI can detect no problems, Captain Rogers. Everything seems to be proceeding on schedule, albeit slowly.â
Steve nodded, but continued to pace the floor. âYouâre still carefully monitoring their brain patterns? Making sure theyâreâŚokay?â
âOf course, sir. Due to the unusual nature of the situation, however, Iâm unable to predict anomalies.â
âIn other words itâs wait and see, huh?â
âUnfortunately. I will be able to alert you if something immediately occurs, but I cannot tell you beforehand.â
Steve sighed, staring at his hands. âUnderstood. We figured as much.â
Steve was about to ask JARVIS another question, when he heard a piercing screech from the corner of the room. âWhat in the worldâ?â
Spinning on his heel, he got a good look at their trapped âguest.â It was suddenly rising up to its full height, and flapping its wings like an angry bat. Did it even have wings before? He wasnât sureâ
âCaptain Rogers,â JARVIS began. âIâm detecting increasing amounts of the foreign compound rising in the room.â
âWhat?â Steve narrowed his eyes at the creature. âIs it coming from Bruce and Tony, or thatâŚthing?â
âAll three, Iâm afraid. Its as if the amounts are being raised on purpose.â
That didnât sound goodâŚâIs it affecting Tony, or Bruce?â
JARVIS paused before responding. âTheir blood pressure levels are steadily climbing, and both experiencing various forms of respiratory distress.â
âShut it down, JARVIS,â Steve said quickly. He rushed over, and saw both Tony and Bruceâs faces contorting in their unconscious states. âShut it down, reverse it, do whatever you need to do.â
âCaptain Rogers - Steve - somethingâŚsomething is preventing me from doing so.â Even JARVIS sounded distressed. âMy control overrides are being blocked.â
âHow?!â Steve reached for the off switch, but was blown back by some kind of electrostatic discharge. He wasnât sure what was happening, but he had an idea. He glared at the monster in the room.
âCaptain Rogers, their blood pressure levels are dangerously high, and I fear we may have a Code Green within minutes.
Dammit. His gaze flickered to Tony, and it did look like he was growing. And a distinct green tinge crawled down his arm. Â
He didnât have a choice.
âFine,â he shouted, staring down the demon. âYou wanna switch with someone, then you can switch with me. Just leave them out of this!â
A small growl - something almost like a chuckle - emanated from the demonâs throat, and it motioned to Steve with a claw. Steve obeyed and ignored JARVISâ outcry, while slowly removing the respirator from his face.
âThis is what you wanted, right?â The fumes made him dizzy, but he didnât care. âYouâll put them back, if I do this? You and I switch, and youâll put them backâ? Promise me!â
The demonic chuckle grew to a howl.
Sorry guys, had to deal with the devil, Steve thought darkly.
His vision swam. He held on, hopingâŚpraying that he was doing the right thing. Tony and Bruce would be mad. But there wasnât another way, this time. And there was no way to warn them. Besides, they discussed contingencies. They just didnâtâŚdidnât think it would beâŚhimâŚ
Steve felt his lids grow heavy and he dropped to his knees. Before he hit unconsciousness he heard the demon roar. And thenâ
âStop!
***
Was he in the ice? Was he dreaming? His mind floated in and out, like drifting through a soupy, freezing fog.
***
âThat idiot.â
âShh!â
âIf heâs okay, I get to yell at him. You said âall bets are off,â and Iâm holding you to that.â
Both of you. Be quiet.
Steve heard that, louder than the other words.
Where was he?
Ah. Hello, Captain Rogers.
Steve blinked. Who was talking?
Dr. Stephen Strange, at your service. Iâm sorry I couldnât come before this time. But Iâm here now. Thatâs all that matters.
Are youâŚare you in my mind?
Sort of. Your conscious state is currently on the astral plane. I had to bring you here to heal you. I apologize for the odd state of things. Youâre currently unconscious. You should be all right within a day or two, once I set you right.
Tony? Bruce? Are theyâ
Theyâre fine. As soon as I was able to stabilize the demonic presence, I reversed the damage it had done, and returned them to their host bodies.
OkayâŚgood. And that creatureâ?
Returned to its realm. Itâs over, Captain Rogers. And your companions are waiting for you to awaken, so if youâre feeling up to it?
Yes, absolutely.
***
A deep sigh rose from his chest, and he felt two sets of hands - one meaty, one lithe - grab hold of him.
âBe careful, Steve. Donât rush yourself.â
âRush, nothing. The doofus has been out for two days. Itâs about he opened up those baby blues.â
Steveâs eyes fluttered at the voice, and he frowned a little at Tonyâs looming face. âTonyâŚ?â His voice sounded like sandpaper wrapped in lead.
âIn the flesh.â And oh, what a sight, to see that crazy grin and facial hair in the right body.
âAnd Bruce?â
âOn your left,â Bruce teased, mimicking their friend Sam. Steve slowly turned his head as a grin spread across his lips. Yep. Bruceâs voice, and Bruceâs glorious body. All in one perfect place. âI thought we talked about this martyr thing.â
âYeah, we did,â Tony said, sitting on the edge of their bed. Apparently they were in their shared bedroom, which Steve really appreciated. No more waking up in hospital beds or unfamiliar places for him, no sir. âSomeone needs a little lesson in how not to scare his boyfriends.â
Steve groaned, struggling to sit up, and felt a tug as Bruce pulled him up. He still felt wiped, but cuddling into Bruceâs soft shoulder definitely helped. âWhereâs Strange?â
âHe left a few minutes ago. He said to tell you to quit playing the hero.â
âQuit lying. That was all you, Tony.â Bruce gently squeezed Steveâs hand. âBut Tonyâs not wrong. We were lucky Strange came along in time, but still.â
Steve shook his head. He coughed, and Bruce brought a cup of water to his lips. âYou two were as good as dead, according to JARVIS. There wasnât another choice to make. So next time, we go outside the boundaries and include me in the contingency plan. Thatâs all I have to say about that. Fair?â
Tony chuckled. âI forgot how much of a pain in the ass he is, first thing after waking up.â
Bruce hid his smile, but the bed still rocked from his hidden laughter. Steve smiled a little broader, enjoying the rippling effect through his own body, due to his proximity to Bruce. Instead of arguing with Tony, though, Bruce kissed Steveâs temple.
âIt was interesting being in Tonyâs body for a bit, but frankly Iâm glad to be in my own. I honestly missed myâŚah. Heft.â
âYeah. I had to get my balance back there, big guy.â Tony smirked fondly at Bruce, and Steve wondered if the shared experience brought them closer. His smile faded, believing heâd missed some shared opportunity of deepening their relationship.
âNever mind. Scoot over.â Bruce lifted the comforter as Steve headed toward the middle of the bed, and Tony joined him on his other side. Steve blinked, realizing the pair were in their bedclothes; he wondered what time it was.
âWhat are you two doing?â
âCuddling,â Bruce said.
âCuddling?â
âYep.â Tony turned on the TV. âJARVIS ordered take-out, and I programed the bots to deliver it. So nope, no getting out of this bed for a while. Youâre stuck with us.â
Steve sighed softly as Bruce covered his left side like a giant sheepdog, and Tony on his right curled up like a cat. He murmured his thanks as Bruce ran his fingers through his hair and kissed him softly, while Tony grabbed his hand. Well, maybe he did miss a bit of bonding. But having his best guys in bed with him, like this, was ten times better anyway.
