I think about infravision a lot
So when Underdark-dwelling creatures opt to see in infrared instead of visible light, their eyes shine red, which sort of gives the impression that they're detecting infrared radiation with their actual eyeballs, but I don't think that's what's happening. Eyes are an organ specifically designed to trap visible light. Detecting infrared requires a whole different kind of organ, like the kind that pit vipers have: a hollow depression with an air chamber and a sensory membrane in the back.
In other animals, heat sensory organs are linked to the optic tectum of the brain, so data is definitely interpreted as an image, much like with visible-spectrum light, so the concept of "seeing" in infrared is pretty spot-on, you'd just have to do it with a different sensory device.
What would really make sense is if drow and duergar and whatnot have tiny little "pits" on their faces, like around their eyes or foreheads, that they use to sense infrared, and this "red glow" is some kind of membrane that actually covers the eyes to block visible light. That would allow the brain to focus fully on one set of visual cues at a time, either visible light spectrum or infrared spectrum. If the membrane is reflective like a tapetum lucidum, it's totally feasible that it would shine red.
