Incipit of the Gospel of Luke (Quoniam quidem multi...), fol. 188r from the Book of Kells, created in an Irish or Scottish monastery ca. 800. Now in the Library of Trinity College, Dublin.
I sit by the window, my legs tucked beneath me, my gaze fixed on the moon as I slowly smoke my one cigarette of the week. I have an unhealthy tendency toward obsession. I’m aware of it. It’s a tendency I indulge, sometimes, when I’m in the mood; most of the time, however, I try to keep it in check.
I hate losing control.
The moon is just a small waning crescent—nothing emotional or poetic—and yet there’s something about the night that draws me in. When I breathe, the air filling my lungs tastes of summer, of muggy heat, and of endless evenings. It smells of childhood memories, vacations I never took, and possibilities.
The sound of a car door slamming down on the street pulls me out of my thoughts for a moment. I sigh, my eyes closed, rubbing the small scar on my wrist.
The air is pleasant, but melancholic. It doesn’t inspire my art… not like autumn evenings do, with their broken promises and dead leaves.
I know I sound strange. I’ve always known it.
I’ve learned to flaunt my difference—to protect myself, and also to elevate myself, in some way, as great poets do.
If the atmosphere is melancholic, it’s because it seems to call out to a life that doesn’t belong to me. It invites me to wear short dresses and run barefoot on the sand at sunset, or dance all night with a cocktail in my hand. It speaks of pleasures that, like summer, last a moment and then fade away.
I could chase after them too, lose myself in them, but then I’d become just like everyone else, and my life has never been an ordinary one.
Unhappiness belongs to great souls—or so some people say.
Maybe I’m just tired of fighting out there and have decided to shut myself away in here. I live in my head, the only place where I have absolute control over what happens.
Sometimes, I lose it even there.
I exhale a little puff of smoke and watch it dissolve into the air. If I talked to a psychologist, she’d probably tell me it’s because of the traumas I’ve suffered. She’d have a field day with me.
For my part, I prefer to believe it’s a choice. I like to think of myself as a character from Dostoevsky, who invents stories in her head to live at least in some way, or a damned artist, or an idle noblewoman overcome by existential malaise.
My paintings are dark, with a disturbing sensuality; fear and excitement make the heart beat with the same intensity, so much so that sometimes the line between them blurs.
My photographs often depict the transience of life. Memento mori is my motto.
You live more intensely when you remember that every moment could be your last.
I find beauty where few others see it. I’m drawn to what is fragile and fleeting. Perhaps because I saw death in my mother’s eyes when I was a child, and I’ve never been able to forget it.

This is the beginning of Chapter 1 of my novel Solitudine sotto la pelle (Solitude beneath the skin). It's in Italian, my native language, but I'm thinking of publishing it in English to broaden my public. What do you think?
Tutto è compiuto. Alles ist erledigt. Tout est fini. It’s all over.
In russo ho sognato, in tedesco ho pensato, in francese ho conosciuto il carcere, in inglese ho compreso quanto il mondo fosse grande, in italiano ho combattuto e amato.
E in italiano morirò.

Ho visto molti individui; ho visitato alcune nazioni; ho partecipato a diverse imprese senza esserne convinto; ho mangiato quasi tutti i giorni; ho avvicinato delle donne.

Strana sorte morire a ricreazione.
