How Dhar Mann Does Not Understand How Acting Jobs Work. At All. (Analyzing âFamous Actor Gets Arrestedâ)
If you know me, then you KNOW I was gonna cover this video the moment it came out. And boy am I!
âFamous Actor Gets Arrested On The Job, What Happens Next Is Shockingâ
This meant either two things for me:
The actor was accused of something because of some discriminative reason, and a tragic backstory would fix the issue
This was actually the ending of the video where nothing ânextâ happens and the actor is going to be a black coded jerk who âdeserves itâ
But I KNEW one thing. And the very thing that drove me to this video: Acting. No, not talking about the poorly directed acting in these videos or the awful dialogue these actors are given (they deserve better), Iâm talking about Acting as a Job. In general.Â
I took classes about this career, Iâve BEEN an actor in my community. Iâve been an actor in my schools. Itâs a huge hobby of mine. So I can safely say that I know how the job works in real life.
So accompanying the bad messages Dhar Mann has to offer in this video, Iâm also gonna go over: Did Dhar Mann portray the job field accurately?
SPOILERS: NO. NOT AT ALL.
(Keep in mind, everything I say is my opinion, and not fact. I do not mean to attack the crew involved with these videos in any way, if I do, I apologize. If you think these are good messages, good for you. Iâm glad you can unironically watch these videos and see good in them. I just canât.)
Also before we start this, the video starts with Dhar Mann announcing he just hit thirty billion views (good for him, I guess) so heâs giving away laptops to whoever goes on his Instagram and comments emojis. Okay, nothing wrong with giving away stuff, but like... that seems like a VERY inefficient way to figure out who wins the laptops. Like, you can just type any emoji you want, and heâll just randomly pick a winner. This isnât the lottery Dhar Dhar. Just saying.
Anyway, letâs analyze the bad messages AND the Acting inaccuracy in âActor gets arrested on the job, what happens next is shockingâ
1: Itâs A Black And White World
This is going to be the #1 Message in nearly EVERY Dhar Mann post I make. If it ends up not being, then weâre not living on earth anymore.
But yeah, what a surprise, human beings donât exist in the Dhar Mann universe. Youâre either a good person, or a bad person, NO in between AT ALL.
EVERYONE has said this complaint! And I did so as well.
So in the case of this video, the set up is about two men in the acting field of their careers, both of them with extremely minor background roles in a show. They both want to get promoted to bigger parts and have their talent be noticed by people. And surprise surprise, one man is humble, the other man laughs a lot. Thatâs it.Â
Remember kids: Donât laugh. Laughing is EVIL.
Gosh forbid we promote happiness and a positive human gesture to be encouraged.
I will say that the âgood guyâs name in this is Bruno.
And the âbad guyâ here, wants to get promoted outside of his background actor role and be a bigger part. One with actual lines. Which is why heâs jealous of Bruno because he has a single line.
Acting Inaccuracy 1: You Can Get Promoted To Bigger Parts In A Production
This is NOT accurate to how the job works AT ALL.
There is NO SUCH THING as âgetting promoted to a bigger part.â
Thatâs not how casting works.
Maybe this would work in other jobs, but NOT this field.
Casting is completely decided through Auditions, where ANYONE can participate in them. Basically, these are meetings you go to, where you perform an acting skit in front of the producers and director, to show off your talent and use THAT to express how good you are for their production. If they decide youâre good enough for their show, they have CallBacks to make you do it again to double check before they fully submit you to a certain part in the show.
What part you get in the production, background, or full on character, depends on how good of an actor youâve proven yourself to be in auditions, and if the director sees you as a fitting role. That goes for ALL PARTS. NOT just the characters. Youâre lucky if you even get IN a show. Iâve actually been background for more times than Iâve been a character. I believe Iâve only been a named character like... three times? Four times? I was actually the lead once. Just once though.Â
And hereâs another thing: Once a cast is locked, ITâS LOCKED. You are that character, and you will ALWAYS be that character for the show. Unless of course you physically cannot be in the show for some reason. If thatâs the case, an UNDERSTUDY will take your part. NOT another actor in the show who already has a part. Background or not. An Understudy is a backup actor for a specific part, where their job is to fill in or the actual actor of the character if they canât be there for whatever reason. You might say âWell thatâs pointlessâ it actually is a VERY useful job for someone to have, as even if the actual actor is there 24/7, the understudy will learn all your lines and all your parts to be prepared for anything.
My point is that, once you have a role. YOU HAVE THAT ROLE. There is NO changing that. And if you canât be there, the understudy will take your role. NOT someone whoâs already in the show with ANY part.Â
A bigger role in the show does NOT EQUAL promotion. That is absolutely ridiculous. You CANNOT just promote yourself to be the lead of the show, like you could for a head desk role in business. Especially if the cast is locked in. That is NOT how that works.
So I have absolutely NO IDEA what these people in the Dhar Mann video are talking about, when they say theyâre gonna promote themselves to bigger parts. They canât do that! Doesnât matter how good they are, doesnât matter what they do. They are the backgrounds in this production, and will always be. Taking over for the leads if they go missing is NOT their job!Â
You CANâT get âpromotedâ to the lead role. Especially not in the middle of production. If that were the case, production of the media would be absolute hell, because theyâd be switching people every single hour. Thatâs why they lock in the roles before production even starts.
This is complete bull***t.
Also, the acting in Dhar Mann really IS bad here anyway. Because itâs directed to be corny. You really want me to take this seriously, get a different director who actually KNOWS how people FUNCTION.
But what also proves my points is this line from Bruno:Â âOne day, an actor didnât show up to set, so the director decided to give me a shot.â
Again, that would be the job of the UNDERSTUDY. Bruno is a background character. He has a locked part. In real life, Bruno would not be allowed to take the guyâs part, no matter what.
I actually agree with the bad guy here, who calls bs on the idea that he could. âYou took someone elseâs part? I didnât even know that was possible.â
Yeah. BECAUSE ITâS NOT.
2:Â âGood things come to those who waitâ
This is why we shouldnât talk about Bruno.
Because that is a TERRIBLE message to send to people.Â
âGood things come to those who waitâ So what youâre saying Dhar Mann, is that if you want to have good things happen to you, what you do is just sit around and WAIT for yourself to get promoted?
If you just sit around, dreaming, and hoping you get good things to happen to you, NEWS FLASH, NOTHING will happen to you. Youâre just wasting time, and ESPECIALLY in the acting field, you CANâT just sit around and WAIT for stuff to happen. You have to be there on time, you have to do your job, you have to get yourself recognized. You canât just publish a book, and then stop there, sit around, and HOPE someone reads it. You know what will happen? NOTHING. You have to promote yourself in SOME fashion! You have to market, you have to work, you have to plan out what you do.Â
Waiting for good things is the WORST thing you could do. Youâre not gonna get a girlfriend if you donât talk to her. Youâre not gonna get a good job if you donât work. Youâre not gonna get any recognition for a Tumblr post if you donât write it!
Seriously Dhar Mann, WHY must you take the simplest of stories and make them SO Nauseating and so harmful to people? Just have your âgood guyâ put in the work to get this job! Itâs not hard!
Also Noah, our bad guy, (which thank gosh I can imagine Td Noah instead of this guy) says to that âI like to think of it as good things come to those who take action.â
Dhar Mann wants you to believe that Noah is WRONG.
Except, if you read what I just said, you know that I think Noahâs RIGHT.
You HAVE to do stuff to get somewhere! Noah has the right idea in taking action to call out this inaccurate job representation. Heâs trying to put in the work to get promoted, even if itâs inaccurate to how the job works.
HOW is this meant to be WRONG?!
I know Noahâs meant to be a jerk, but thatâs the ONLY explanation for WHY this is bad behavior. Itâs because the dude laughs a lot, so therefore, every action he does should be seen as negative!
So Noah straight up asks for a bigger part, since the lead actor isnât available. (Which again, NOT how that works) And ONLY because Noah so happens to look like the lead actor, the directorâs like âYeah, letâs just have this guy be our lead!â
Acting Inaccuracy 2: Looks play a role in what part you get
This one is kind of a grey area. On one hand, yes, looks CAN play a role in what part you get. And half of the time that just has to do with what race you are or what gender you are. No, thatâs not a racist way of thinking, thatâs just because they need that specific person for the character. Theyâre not gonna cast a woman to play Batman in a Batman movie, if you get what Iâm saying. Like, if your movieâs setting takes place in Asia or something, theyâre gonna cast Asians as the characters, because otherwise that wouldnât be accurate.
With the exception of that though, no, looking exactly like a certain actor DOES NOT play a part in anything. What matters is how good you are as an actor. Especially in a live action production, the actorâs face doesnât matter. Especially if the work isnât published yet. Whether or not you look like the actor thatâs missing, youâre still not gonna get their part no matter what. They can get anyone to be the understudy of the actor, as long as the work isnât published yet and people donât recognize the character, you can have the understudy be the actor, theyâd have to be the character the entire way. Face recognition doesnât play a role.
Again, grey area, but with the exception of the racial sexual border around casting certain characters, what matters is how good of an actor you are. NOT if you look the part.
âIf youâre late one more time, Iâm gonna have to replace you with one of these extrasâ -the director
âKeep up the fascinating facts. And Iâm going to be aro-nauseous all over you!â -Td Noah
Okay, jokes aside, being late DOES sometimes play a factor. Sometimes actors do end up behind schedule, where in that case, during auditions, they let the directors know if they have anything to attend to that should concern. That way, the directors can work around that and proceed their production to work around all cast memberâs schedule.Â
Of course, the lead actor does NOT have a good excuse to be late, as he did not email or call them that they were gonna be late. And sometimes if that gets repetitive, that tells the directors that you are not responsible, and that can get you fired. Then your part would either go to, again, the understudy, OR they recast from someone else who auditioned. But again, they would NEVER give the part to someone who already has a part in the production!
One thing you CANNOT be late for no matter what, is Blocking rehearsal. What that is, is where actors and directors go over the entire script, so that they can cut out or alter any parts of the original script that they must make, to understand the time of the show, fit in that, and what lines do or donât work. That is something EVERYONE needs to be in, because thatâs where the script is officially locked, and the lines there are official.
So skimming through the video, where all you need to know is that Noah plans to sabotage the lead actor so he can get his part, by breaking his car, poisoning him, etc. This causes the lead to never show up, and production goes in the garbage pin, stressing out the director.Â
And Bruno, the entire time, is like âHey, I know production is going badly and some things need to be altered in order for this to work, and that I am a part of this production as well so therefore I should contribute... but Iâm just gonna sit back and do nothing. Iâm not gonna help anyone. Iâm not gonna suggest anything better. Iâm just gonna sit back, keep my mouth shut, and HOPE that everything gets better.â
And yeah, the director has the job to arrange scenes and decide on stuff like this, but no matter what, you are a part of this production! You must help your crew! You must be there for them and suggest stuff when they hit a block! You donât make official choices, but as long as you donât overdo it or take over, you are allowed to help people! Always! Doing nothing is EXACTLY what gets you FIRED!
To be clear, NO, an actor does not decide their lines, thatâs up to the director. However, it IS their job to be the character. It is their job to understand what their part is, what they must do for that role, as well as provide ideas for the producers regarding that character to help them understand that character as well. You can suggest, but not take over. Thereâs a difference.
So anyway, Noah sabotages the lead actor, making them forced to recast. Again, they CANâT cast a person who is already in the show! But the director decides to cast Noah anyway, because... bias. For some unexplained reason. We canât possibly make that clear or flesh that out because otherwise we wouldnât have filler of Noah being forced to play as a bear. Ha ha!
And then surprise surprise, Noah gets arrested because he sabotaged the lead actor. He goes to jail for a year.
Okay, fair enough. That IS illegal.
AND THEN they decide to give the role to BRUNO. The guy who has done next to NOTHING THE ENTIRE VIDEO. And everything goes his way, because he did NOTHING. He gets the lead role.
Again. NO. THATâS NOT HOW IT WORKS.
Itâs also harmful lessoning even ignoring the inaccuracy of the job. It doesnât matter if Bruno is on time every time, it doesnât matter if he gives a hundred percent on his part, he WOULDNâT be the lead! Thatâs NOT what he was cast for!Â
If youâre gonna say that Bruno gives a hundred percent! SHOW THAT! SHOW HIM working hard! At least THEN youâd have a point with your message somewhat! But NO, you DIDNâT show him working hard. You just showed him sitting in the back and doing nothing! He doesnât do anything to help the crew, he doesnât do anything supportive, he doesnât help AT ALL. We donât even see him do his job! We donât see ANYONE doing their jobs! Itâs just a bunch of talking about nothing, and sitting around with awful dialogue.
The message basically turns into:Â âIf you want a promotion, DONâT DO ANYTHING. Sit back. Relax. Allow bad stuff to happen. As long as youâre not responsible for the bad stuff, you donât have to do ANYTHING noteworthy to get promoted.â
Great! Guess Iâll slack off at work! Guess I wonât be there for my crew! Guess I wonât help make this production better! Guess I wonât even TRY!Â
Thanks Dhar Mann! I learned something great today! *sarcasm*
Maybe I am Noah deep down. âCome on, a little effort out there people!â -Td Noah
And thatâs how the video ends. The guy who does NOTHING gets EVERYTHING he wants. And the guy who TRIED to be efficient but simply went at it the wrong way goes to JAIL.
So kids! If you want something so bad, you donât do anything! Acting jobs are jokes! Acting means bias and random recastings, and screwing over the very concept of auditions! If you try to do something efficient, youâll go to jail.Â
The message here SHOULD BE âAccept the part you have, and donât sabotage people out of jealousy!â But thatâs NOT the message Dhar Mann is trying to deliver, itâs âGood things come to those who waitâ
Which again, isnât a good message to send to people, especially those who already slack off at work.Â
As for the job accuracy: There is next to nothing. I guess they address the importance of scheduling here...? But other than that, EVERYTHING here is inaccurate. Acting careers DO NOT work like this AT ALL.
Oh geez, Iâm tired. Iâm done.
If you read this post or agree with me, be sure to leave a like. And please, WORK HARD on what you do.
