sorry to bring up gdt frankenstein in your inbox but i totally agreed w your post!! and taking it further i think removing william's death and justine's execution actually weakens elizabeth in the film. justine and elizabeth is the only real moment of female solidarity in the book (and what allows it to pass the bechdel test), and elizabeth's defense of justine shows her as being stronger and more principaled than victor, who literally knows justine is innocent and still won't speak up for her.
(side note: i love victor standing in the corner while elizabeth and justine are having this heartrending discussion, in which elizabeth calls justine 'my playfellow, my companion, my sister', and then turning around and saying *he* was suffering most!)
the justine-elizabeth relationship also highlights just how precarious elizabeth's own situation is; she may be formally a member of the family, but her position depends just as much on the frankenstein family's goodwill, and she presumably know's victor's possessiveness of her. a lot of her halo-effect comes from victor's perspective of her, but you can also imagine her playing the game, as it were, and softening *herself* down. this is another bit of depth lost when changing elizabeth's position in the family, in favour of making her a traditional del toro 'beautiful girl who loves the monster and has kooky interest!'. idk i find it very difficult that del toro chose to give victor and the creature a moment of forgiveness and peace, while the only two major female characters are there to die and add depth to the main male characters.
like, this isn't 'it's not exactly like the book so i hate it!'. it's 'del toro has shaped the story to suit his own needs and perspectives, and that's fine, but we still need to talk about how those changes remove a lot of the feminist themes, and somehow end up with fewer major female characters then the *book from the 19th century*'
as i said i haven’t seen the movie so thank u for going more in depth on this 👍 what truly bothered me the most abt that post was that ppl were bringing it back to mary shelley for his adaptation not passing the bechdel test which as u said was his own choices & not hers. i think ppl want to dismiss any criticism of what del toro did w the movie in regard to the lack of women by acting as if the issue lies w the source material written by a woman when he took a lot of his own creative liberties & is obvs going to bring a male perspective to it. there was clearly an opportunity to explore relationships between women in depth and he chose not to. why should ppl dismiss women who aren’t happy abt that? why is this considered a non issue worth making fun of women for pointing out? bothers me so much…..
tysmmmm for collecting all the lewis pics 🥺
omg i’m so sorry for only answering this ask now 🥺 it got buried in my inbox and i didn’t see it before 😔 i’ve been slacking with the f1 posting lately since the season hasn’t been that great but thank you 🥺

[re: septum ring]

59, 20, and 72 :)
let's goo! #59 is "everything" by kehlani. this is a gorgeous track off a gorgeous album. could float dreamily here for ages.
next is #20 "leaving summer" by MAUIMØON & soulchyld ft. akeine god a truly effortless late summer track. the definition of ease. mellow. sweet.
and #72 is "church girl" by beyoncé, which makes sense, bc of the renaissance tracklist, this one did not have me in quiiite as much of a choke-hold as some of the others.
[ask for a number on my spotify wrapped]
