One thing I haven't yet seen discussed is how Rose kind of looks and acts like Ilya. Only a tiny bit, but still. She's blond, with wavy hair, large lips, and defined facial features. She's a very talented person at the top of a demanding and competitive field. She likes his snark instead of treating him like a prodigy role model. And not only is she very confident making the first move (Which surely plenty of women are when meeting a famous hockey player) but she's able to very accurately understand Shane in a way that only Ilya had so far. Even before she diagnoses him as Gay, she anticipates and corrects for his social awkwardness. In their very first conversation she 1. Quickly introduces a topic he's comfortable with (hockey), 2. Gives him a reason to be there so he doesn't worry he's just another annoying fan (helping her eat the fries) and 3. accurately decides that his hesitation is from discomfort, not disinterest, and that he'd happily pursue her once he gets a little push.
How much of Shane convincing himself he's attracted to her was seeing blonde hair out of the corner of his eye and smiling to himself out of habit? The joy of being able to speak rudely without worrying about his image? The goddam relief of someone understanding his needs instead of just treating him like a robot?
Not being attracted to Rose isn't just the definitive proof of his gayness because she's attractive and charming by all standards. It's also because the main meaningful difference between Rose and Ilya is their genders. Before her he could tell himself that the only reason he felt so drawn to Rozanov was how competent they both were, or how well Ilya understood him, or that maybe he just had a very specific physical type. And instead he's having to come to terms with the fact that the only woman he could want was only desirable because she sometimes reminded him of Ilya (and because of some very platonic feelings he's trying to relabel as romantic) and even then he's done such a bad job of falling in love that it only takes two months for her to realize it.

I just had the epiphany that there is a difference between wanting to have a relationship (the desire for the attraction) and finding the person who you want to have a relationship with (the attraction). I still have no idea what it feels like, but now I understand the difference, hooray :D
