the   day   cassandra    “   cassie   ”    lang   was   born   was   the   best   day   of   scott’s   life.    he   remembers   looking   at   her   knowing   INSTANTLY ,    he   would   give   his   life   for   his   baby   girl.     his   world   revolved   around   her.     he   looked   at   her   in   the   nursery   and   saw   the     SUN   IN   HER   GRIN     and   the     STARS   IN   HER   EYES     as   she   peered   back   at   him.  

he   never   thought   that   looking   at   cassie   would   hurt. 

cause   here’s   the   problem :     cassie   lang   is   not   ten   years   old   anymore.     and   while   she   is   still   the   cassie   that   he   loves   irrevocably  ,    she   isn’t   the   little   girl   he   remembers.    five   years   came   and   passed.     he   wasn’t   there.     can’t   help   but   feel   a   pang   of   GUILT   every   time   he   looks   at   her.     HE   MADE   A   PROMISE.     he   wasn’t   going   to   miss   more   time.     he   PAID   his   time   in   san   quentin.     he   PAID   OFF   the   child   support   he   owed    &     when   he   couldn’t   find   a   job ,    he   made   one   for   himself.      finished   his   house   arrest   with   good   behavior.     he   worked   so   goddamn   hard.     HE   WASN’T   SUPPOSED   TO   GO   ANYWHERE. 

but   ever   since   the   snap ,    the   decimation ,    the   blip ,      WHATEVER   THEY’RE   CALLING IT    —      it’s   like   his   efforts   meant   nothing. 

their   relationship   is   paying   the   price.     do   they   still   love   &    care   for   each   other ?     of   course.     but   cassie ?     she’s   anxious ,    clingy.     worried   scott   may   be   taken   from   her   again.     and   he   can’t   even   blame   her.

IT’S   HAPPENED   SO   MANY   TIMES   BEFORE.

little   things   like   not   knowing   her  teacher’s  name  anymore   &    not   hearing   her   childish   giggle   when   he’d   make   heart - shaped   pancakes.     they’re   small ,    subtle   reminders   that   they’ve   lost   time ,    and   they   manage   to   cause   an   ache   in   scott’s   heart.      when   he   holds   her   in   his   arms ,    she   doesn’t   fit   like   she   used   to.     sometimes   he   looks   at   her ,    and   expects   to   see   his   ten   year - old   PEANUT   to   stare   back   at   him. 

he   wants   to   be   a   good   dad   to   cassie.
