Week 5
Went for a visit to Impact Digital this week to learn all about the printing process.
It was very overwhelming, but a surprisingly modest company. I mean the machines are huge and the amount of work they turn out is extremely impressive but they only have a staff of about 25 people or so (said the guide). Not to mention that they work really long days too.
I can’t say that I knew too much about printing, apart from how to work the printing services at Officeworks lol...but after this excursion I certainly found my interest piqued. The finished products that we were being shown were absolutely gorgeous. Let alone the choices for finishes, paper stock and which of their two types of printers we should use. I feel like, even though I know very little, they would have no trouble helping me achieve any type of finished product that I was looking to create. I don’t want to go into too much detail as they made us all sign in on a confidentiality agreement when we arrived, hence also the lack of photos too. But I am very excited to see the finished magazine already and we’ve barely even begun!
Aside from this tomorrow our group has organized to have a face to face meeting to try and get back on track with our gantt schedule, we have fallen behind on a couple of important basic tasks that need to be completed before we can move forward with the rest of the project. Namely, setting team rules/work flow, getting a proper brand identity and design document set up, and deciding on what content to put into the magazine. This is due to all the missed classes/holidays/sick days...it is a rather difficult task given that there are only three of us working on this magazine so we need to take on many more individual team roles than we would have if the group was a bigger one. But I have no doubt that we will be able to work out any snags and be able to pull this off, it’ll just take a little elbow grease lol.
