I was sexually abused by my grandmother’s second husband from when I was about 5 years old until I was 11. He started off by making me do sexual favors for him that I hadn’t realized were sexual or inappropriate because I was too young to know any better. And as I got older and things escalated, I basically just felt like trash whenever he was around, but I couldn’t tell anybody because of the stigma that surrounded me in that situation, which I felt so strongly even though none of it was my fault. But one day, I had wanted to go to the gas station to put air in my bike tires because they were flat, but he was the only person around who could drive me, and he said he wouldn’t help me unless I let him put his fingers in me, and I just couldn’t take it anymore. I was just done with the whole damn thing. So I stood up to him, which felt like the most terrifying thing I’d ever done, and told him that if he touched me again I would call the cops on him and tell them and his wife and everybody that he was a pedophile. And he left me alone after that. He never got arrested though because I never did tell anyone, but he did die not too long after, so there’s that. And I think some aspects of my first forays into sex on my own terms partly stemmed from me having something to prove to myself after that kind of experience--that I wasn’t broken or ruined.

But yeah, during the interim between legislative sessions, I get to just sit in my office and edit stuff. WHICH IS THE BEST.
