[imaginary mid-season] "the whole balance of the crew and blackbonnet working things out separately for a bit"
One thing I kept thinking about with canon 2x05 and 2x06 was how Ed and Stede didn't seem to be *doing* much.
Why was Stede paired with Izzy in 2x05? Why spend a whole episode of narrative time on those two instead of the OTP? (don't wank about the father figure shit don't do it don't do it) Sure, when Stede reunites with Ed at end of ep it's funny when he tells Ed he had a whole A plot without him – but that means Ed is fishing with Fang for an awfully long time. It's a very sweet and important lesson Ed learns about Shutting The Fuck Up Sometimes but his half of the episode feels like an especially missed opportunity to me.
Likewise, in canon 2x06, I felt like they both just... hovered on the edge of Calypso's party, onlooking with vague paternal interest as the kids have a kegger. Supposedly they were the ones who organized it, but come on, they're sassing orphans while the crew do all the shopping, even.
I meant it in the original post: I really do like a lot of things they did mid-season, I just don't think the beats made a lot of sense. So from 2x06, I stole killing Ned Lowe and made it killing someone scarier (Hornigold) in imaginary 2x08; and I stole Stede and Ed boning at inopportune times and made it hornier (reacting to Anne and Mary's insane murder games) in imaginary 2x05.
[imaginary 2x08] "I love Stede expressing love in the grounded way of murder"
:D
Stede *loves* murder, okay. Stede left his wife and kids because he was vaguely aware he might be gay but the thing he left them for was a HIGH MURDER LIFESTYLE, and we should respect his choices. Ed likes him because he is insane. Ed really wants to kiss him after he burns down the French party for him. This is 100% what I want their happily ever after to be.

It's marvelous idea! I love how you managed to decrease tonal shift between seasons and not throw away s2ep1-3 darkness, which I personally really like. Using Anne and Mary to both give crew time to heal and show OTP how they can be together while staying absolutely mad is really great and budget-friendly move. I don't really get why crew on Revenge has to hide before Hornigold is caught up with them, though. It's not like somebody on the ship already,or did I miss smth?
thank you! I didn't realize until you said it that "decreasing tonal shift between seasons" was something I wanted to do with this, actually, so thank you for the insight.
[pretend mid-season] "Using Anne and Mary [...] show OTP how they can be together while staying absolutely mad" – I loved canon 2x04 but the part that was weirdest to me wasn't when Buttons turned into a seagull; it was definitely when Anne was flicking the knife in Mary's back and Ed *wasn't* like "hell yeah." He's exactly that weird, lmao
[pretend 2x08] "I don't really get why crew on Revenge has to hide before Hornigold is caught up with them, though" – very fair! No, you didn't miss anything; there's not a spy on board or anything like that. I imagined it more like, first they're hanging out on deck all day, but then Hornigold's ship sees them and they get nervous and go down below. And then they keep getting more scared/more jumpy thinking that maybe Hornigold's ship can see them when they're in each place (the main cabin, the galley) – so they finally just pack into the smallest place they can think of, the deathbed room.
My idea was to make it both a silly retreat (like, you think Hornigold can see you in *there?* lol) and a symbolic one; they really think they're on their deathbed. They're really all packed in to where we saw two people die ("die") earlier in the season (Izzy, then Ed), so I get to foreshadow that whatever happens with Hornigold is going to be as serious as that.
I loved this comment, thank you so much <3

#i really like this? #it's a different approach that works and allows everyone to grow #and most critically no one dies #though i still want zheng in here somehow ;_;
Thank you! You may be pleased to hear that my beta and I, shooting the shit, enjoyed a long discussion about how we could throw Zheng into pretend 2x06, with the couples' retreat. Like, does she run the B&B because she's SO SICK of having to deal with her partnered crewmates' problems? Is she gathering intel on other captains who inevitably need to stop by, because pirates are just shit at relationships? Is it a side hustle (like her unexplained tea shop) but she doesn't actually care much and makes Auntie do all the emotional labor?
but in the end I stuck with Khakis Guy for the B&B because I wanted someone truly obnoxious to somehow still tell the OTP how dumb they were. I own that this was unfair of me to deprive Zheng of the opportunity :D

I really like this! A lot of such excellent ideas – I especially like moving the Dinner Party an episode later, because WOW should Stede and Ed not be ready to play bitter exes 30 seconds after getting their grand reunion. And lesbian pirate ship would be such a fun addition! I also looooove Stede declaring love to an Ed in pain; that's such a good problem for them! And the season end is so much for deranged pirates!
thanks!! I'm glad you liked the idea of moving Dinner Party one episode later, too – my favorite 2x04 metaphor (I messed with it here) is "outpatient therapy" after "catastrophic mental collapse" in 2x01-02 and like, "most intense inpatient ever" in 2x03. So give Ed 2x04 not as Dinner but as purely outpatient, with Stede as very unsure visitor, awkwardly trying to push forward with "love is all you need." More paaaaain
Those lesbians are so competent, let me tell you. They'd tell the Revenge about unionizing and ignoring annoying captains and everything :)
okay but what if... a different ofmd s2
I tried several times to make a less tl;dr version of this post, but it's not happening. BEHOLD: a season I just like better. It fixes things that IÂ personally didn't like (and IÂ have a strong Ed and Izzy bias). I wanted to do a few major things:
Keep 2x01-2x03, because I love them so damn much. this unfortunately sets the stakes *really high* for the rest of the season, so...
Rework the characters that canon s2 introduced, to be able to focus more tightly on the Revenge's response to the 2x01-2x03 atom bomb.
Give Ed and Stede more focused arcs (individually and as a couple). Ed and Stede were, emotionally, at completely opposite poles in 2x01-2x03, and in canon I think they didn't connect much after that. So in my version, they'll do basic work to understand why their s1 meet-cute failed and how they can move on to having a real relationship.
Address Ed's very vividly depicted violence from 2x01-2x02. I found the amends depicted in canon somewhere between "unsatisfying" and "horrifying." Jesus did I need to fuck around with that!
the three major acts in the season:
ACT 1 (2x01-2x03) – Trauma! These episodes remain largely the same as in canon.
ACT 2 (2x04-2x06) – Recovery I've edited these episodes so Ed + Stede are entirely separated from Izzy + the Crew. This gives the OTP space to work on themselves and their relationship. Likewise, Izzy has space away from Ed to go through his arc of self-discovery and consider if he wants to reconcile with Ed. Izzy and the Crew all get a chance to recover from The Trauma on their own, together as a community. ACT 3 (2x07-2x08) – Reconciliation Act 2 has given everybody time to process Act 1 and how they might come out of it as better versions of themselves and a stronger community. Now the OTP and the Crew reintegrate and, in the 2x08 climax, prove all their work has been worth it by fighting together against an external menace. (It's Hornigold. It's got to be Hornigold. This is so obvious to me.)
