Fantasy Writers Unite
For my MDP in Design & Technology I want to do a fantasy “how-to” book.
Every time I go to write a story set in homemade fantasy world I notice I use the same things over and over: European monarch system, dragons, badass MC. The lore tends to be the same as well and I also tend to make up my own monsters - which is not only draining but means I need to explain what it is, which can be boring. When I go to research new things to add to my stories the same articles pop up with the same old things regarding fantasy.
So, my idea is to create a book that shows you (fantasy writers) new monsters, how to create your own, map making, world making, tropes and a bunch of other things. I know there are a bunch of other books out there like this, but this is where my laziness and selfishness comes in handy. I’m writing this book for me, so I’m going to write it how I write. I’m going to be stupid and funny and sarcastic. I’m going to add horribly hand drawn sketches and notes. It’s going to FEEL personal, because other fantasy “how-to” books don’t do that. They feel like your reading a textbook.
I know this seems like a horrible, repetive thing but I swear I’m going to make it FUN! This is where you guys are gonna come in, I need to have a survey of some sort. This is it, Tumblr is my survey. I have a few questions for you guys to answer and some favours you could help me out on below. Please, please do, it’ll help a lot!!
1. Portrait or landscape book? I personally prefer portrait.
2. What are some overused creatures/lines/plots/objects and such in fantasy novels you have noticed?
3. Do you like the medieval parchment aesthetic for books like this? Again, I think it’s been overdone.
4. Do you like hands on activities when creating your fantasy story?
5. Would you guys be able to send me links to cool myths and such that you really like?
6. What are some things you struggle with regarding fantasy writing? What do you wish you knew in the beginning?
7. Would you guys be interested in buying this if it was to become an actual thing? (It won’t because I’m broke AF)
