mukuro and sayaka couldn't be more different! one of them lives for public attention, is bright and bubbly, as well as incredibly popular, while the other one lurks in the shadows, is quiet and usually by herself and tries to keep her distance from others!

and yet, despite those differences, both girls ended up falling in love with you!

mukuro and sayaka only met each other at hope's peak academy! otherwise two girls as different as them likely would've never crossed paths…

it was at the same school that they met you and slowly fell in love with you! while mukuro kept her feelings for you a secret for a long time, sayaka was very open about her feelings for you!

mukuro always thought that sayaka would be the girl you'd end up picking and that she could only admire you from afar. but it was actually sayaka who helped mukuro get close to you and pushed for both girls to date you!

sayaka is usually the one taking the lead in the relationship! she's the one to take the first step, to make it easier for mukuro and you to take the second and third step right after her!

sayaka is also incredibly affectionate, both with you and mukuro! despite mukuro insisting at first that she doesn't need affection, sayaka sees through that lie and notices how touch starved mukuro is!

through sayaka, mukuro learns to not only open up to you, but she starts to realize a few things about herself too!

mukuro envies sayaka a lot, but her jealousy towards sayaka comes from a good place. mukuro is actually happy that she has someone to be jealous of, as that only means she has something to strive towards; to grow more confident and open, like sayaka!

over the course of your relationship, mukuro begins to smile more, open up to sayaka and you and realize what she wants out of life! she's improving right in front of your eyes, growing happier and more content with herself each day!

and all of that would've never been possible if it wasn't for the relationship the three of you are in…

DR doesn't always have the best track record with women but god does it still do a lot well, especially in the first game. In the first chapter, where we still don't know what to expect in terms of character depth, I feel like Kodaka really takes advantage of that by having Maizono and Ikusaba seemingly play into misogynistic archetypes only to completely subvert them later.

Like, ah yes, here's the female deuteragonist that's starting to emotionally rely on the male protagonist despite seeming much more capable and self-driven than him*. Welp, there she goes being fridged for his manpain or something- hang on, she did what now? She was manipulating him to frame him and her dying message was partly made out of guilt?? Holy shit, where did her act end and her genuine desperation and fear begin??? Did she even know herself?????

And ah yes, an airheaded model character. There she goes doing something stupid and being killed for it; shame there wasn't more to h-FUCKING HELLO?????

They're some of the shortest-lived characters in the series but still have so much nuance to them, just like every other character in DR, if you put even a little effort into looking below the surface. And both of them feel designed to call out the player in targeted ways for reducing people to stereotypes.
