When VALIE EXPORT was eighteen, she and a boyfriend switched gender by exchanging their appearances for a series of photographs that are now lost. She later did a series of images called Identity Transfer which are ambiguous in their representation of gender and reflect a particular historical moment – the end of the 1960s – when male and female clothing began to merge and became confused, at the same time as the feminist movement began to gain cultural visibility.
