How many of my chronic illness folk who need to follow a strict diet have been told that their illness is a good thing because now “you will eat healthier!!!” ?! 🙋🏻🙋🏻🙋🏻 I know I have, and it totally sucks. (I mean, how dare you imply that my chronic illness is a GOOD thing? You have no idea what it takes away from you until you experience it yourself. If you are in good health or your illnesses are acute, then don’t you dare tell me to be grateful for my illness.) Spoonie diets are so restrictive, and no they are not “diets” like your average abled body takes on. It’s not to lose weight and it’s not as a “cleanse” that we will stop after six weeks. 🙄 It is lifelong and in many cases, straying from the diet is detrimental to our health. 😖 . . I know personally I felt more free and healthy in my eating before becoming sick, because now I am so limited in the fruits and vegetables I can eat. 🚫The #ICDiet tends to be very bland, especially so for those of us that are #vegetarian or #vegan. One of the hardest things I’ve had to give up as an #ICWarrior is my favorite fruit: pineapple and kiwi. I’m lucky enough in the fact that if I decide to “treat myself” to non IC-friendly foods, it won’t result in anything life threatening. (In my case it causes worsened pain and a flare up in other symptoms.) Many of the chronically ill can not say the same. So I do consider myself blessed that on rare occasions I can arm myself with some high pH water, aloe vera pills, and Prelief and indulge in these favorites of mine. . . I guess the point of this post is, to the healthy: Please be mindful of what you say. Your words have more weight than you realize. And to the sick: You are not alone. There are others out there who understand your experiences. Don’t feel bad about how ableist assholes view your sickness. And don’t feel bad for not being the “perfect” sick person. We all have our moments. It’s all about #selfcare and you’ve gotta do what’s best for you. 👊🏻💖✌🏻️
