she hadnāt actually planned to show up unannounced ā this time.
james is still on the other side of the country,Ā and natasha doesnāt feel like coming home to an empty apartment,Ā so itās only natural that sheād gone straight to philās from the airport just as she has countless times before.Ā itās strange,Ā after so many decades apart,Ā trying to figure out what she and james are,Ā what they want to be and what they will be.Ā sometimes,Ā strange becomes hard,Ā and they donāt have the time to figure out hard,Ā so they skate along their softening boundaries and let things be ; and when he isnāt there,Ā they all understand that phil remains a constant where no one else will.Ā even if they donāt see each other as much,Ā even if lately,Ā circumstances have changed.
sheād barely made it out of the taxi when james called,Ā so for now,Ā natasha is tucked into a corner of the lobby,Ā the side of her head leaned against the cool,Ā polished stone of the wall as she listens to him tell her about how nice the weather in california is.Ā next time iāll have to scoop you up and save you from all that east coast rain.Ā she says that sounds nice.Ā as much as i love the rain,Ā this is a bit much,Ā and he laughs on the other line.Ā itās such a sweet sound that she doesnāt notice the doors open,Ā only catches the back of a head of blonde hair as it passes.Ā heās saying something else,Ā but natasha doesnāt hear it because when the woman comes up to the doorman,Ā he tells her iām going to let mr. coulson know that youāre here.
natasha watches from her corner as she heads to the elevators,Ā and she doesnāt know why she feels her stomach drop so suddenly.
they donāt tell each other everything,Ā but they have always told each other enough.Ā sheās known the names of every date heās had for ten years,Ā and heās known the names of hers.Ā sure,Ā heās always had a thing for blondes,Ā but this feels different.Ā this is different.Ā sheās dressed the way none of the women sheās seen him with dress,Ā and she seems so young yet so tired,Ā the way she moves.Ā natasha catches sight of half her face before the elevator doors close,Ā and thinks she canāt be more than twenty.
( next week,Ā she will see josephineās jacket.Ā she will be sitting on his counter in one of his sweaters,Ā and she will tell him that sheās too young for him.Ā he will not tell her who josephine is for ten more years. )
natasha?
ā... sorry ā phil just told me heās busy tonight.Ā suppose iāll have to get another taxi.āĀ she offers a theatrical but reassuring sigh as she picks up her bag again and heads back out into the cold rain.
ā ŠŠŠ.
itās dark,Ā for nine in the morning.Ā overcast with thick late-winter storm clouds with a chill to boot,Ā natasha is both glad for the short distance between the door and her car,Ā as well as the sharp coldness that helps keep her startled awake.
she checks herself in the rear-view mirror,Ā notes the shadows under her eyes and the tired set of her face and sighs.Ā itās been three,Ā maybe four days since roman had called her,Ā and truthfully she has not slept more than a few hours in that time,Ā has not eaten more than the sandwich or burrito that sharon and clint brought for her,Ā and it shows.Ā after rushing to the warehouse,Ā after watching over bobbi as she cut into his skull,Ā after calling maria,Ā after slicing into hospital records and leveraging her SHIELD clearance to ensure that heād have his own secluded and secure corner of newyork-presbyterianās ICU with no questions asked,Ā natasha has found her way back here.Ā nobody told her to come,Ā nobody asked her to,Ā and in truth,Ā she wonders if josephine will even want to see her.
it has been chaos upon chaos,Ā something that natasha thrives in when she needs to,Ā always able to tuck away her fears and push on.Ā but this ā¦
josephine has not left her mind since that night.Ā the red wrap of skin around her neck,Ā the watery eyes,Ā the silence.Ā even amidst romanās panic and the need for natasha to do what she has done countless times before,Ā it was josephine that stood out like a light,Ā flickering violently through it all.
natasha hopes that after it all,Ā she hasnāt been snuffed out.
something tells her that she hasnāt.Ā and truthfully,Ā though sheāll not admit it,Ā sheās worried what that might mean for when she knocks on the door.
with a sigh,Ā she pats concealer under her eyes and brushes her hair,Ā takes a generous drink of water and steps out of her car.
ā Š¢Š Š.
she doesnāt mean to fall asleep,Ā really.Ā but natasha has been so exhausted,Ā josephine had to step away to answer romanās call,Ā and the sofa is just so comfortable in the way that only sofas can be,Ā that she simply couldnāt help it.
itās well past eight at night when she blinks awake,Ā the dimness of light from another room and the drawn curtains jarring her enough to realize where she is ā rather,Ā where she has been for the past five hours.
natasha pushes up to sit,Ā groaning with residual grogginess and the special kind of dehydration that comes from a good nap,Ā and curses under her breath once she glances at the clock.Ā she can hear shilahās voice sounding softly from another room,Ā and josephine in the kitchen nearby.
hey.
ājosephine, iām ⦠so sorry,āĀ she begins,Ā voice graveled,Ā hands running over her face and surely worsening the smudge of mascara already beneath her eyes.Ā āi didnāt mean to pass out on the couch like that.ā
no,Ā donāt worry about it.Ā you looked so tired all afternoon,Ā i figured i should just let you rest.Ā josephine brings her tea,Ā no doubt reheated from what she couldnāt finish earlier,Ā and natasha smiles.Ā thereās a distinct concern on the other womanās features hidden beneath her own smile that natasha knows she is trying her best to maintain,Ā and all things considered,Ā she cannot blame her.Ā itās been a long week,Ā and jet lag is one of the few things sheās not ever been able to beat.
āi should probably get going.ā natasha fishes in the pockets of the coat sheād laid over the back of the sofa for her phone,Ā sighing as she sees the missed call and text from phil.Ā are you good to drive?Ā i could drive you, or call a taxi?
āno,Ā no,Ā itās okay.Ā iāll be fine.āĀ unsurprisingly,Ā when she looks up again the worry hasnāt passed from her face.Ā gently,Ā natasha reaches for josephineās arm and squeezes.Ā āreally,Ā i just need a good nightās sleep,Ā iām still on paris time.Ā donāt worry about me.ā
ā Š§ŠŠ¢Š«Š Š.
sheās learned to expect the unexpected.Ā to not make promises she canāt keep,Ā especially when it comes to her schedule.Ā it had hurt when josephine told her that little isabel was coming in another week or so,Ā and it had hurt more when natasha had to say that she might not even be in the country then.
despite how much she had reassured her,Ā natasha still cannot help that pin prick guilt of her own absence even while sitting on a rooftop in prague.
josephine is strong,Ā and in truth there should be little to worry over ā theyāve known each other long enough to understand what will and will not separate them,Ā what will and will not allow their time to be shared ā despite the needling concern that in the case that josephine and roman needed her,Ā she wouldnāt be there.
perhaps itās selfish of her,Ā to overestimate her place in her life.
itās another hour of looking through scopes and idle banter with isaiah when her phone buzzes.Ā itās not the best protocol to keep it on her person,Ā but really,Ā sheās been bored,Ā and even if she wonāt admit it,Ā anxious with anticipation.Ā sue her.
natasha leans away from the scope to check.Ā she liked your flowers.Ā isabel is beautiful.
if she is surprised that he had been invited,Ā that josephine had let him see their newest addition ( she hadn't with ridley, natasha recalls ),Ā she does not say.Ā with a quiet smile,Ā she texts josephine congratulations.
ā ŠŠÆŠ¢Š¬.
after the wake,Ā after the few days that the coulson clan had stayed in the guest rooms to catch up and reminisce before all traveling back to boston,Ā natasha had herself returned to brooklyn.
josephine had asked if she still needed help with going through things,Ā and natasha hadnāt had the politeness or will to say no.Ā if nothing else,Ā the company and the sound of children running and laughing would be better than the profound and heavy emptiness that would have been with her otherwise.
so,Ā the house has been all but cleared,Ā save for some beds,Ā sofas,Ā larger furniture that would take too much trouble to move again,Ā and basic supplies for the occasional beach trip.Ā phil had left her everything,Ā but everything is far too much for even natasha to take care of,Ā so it had only been fair for her to tell the bragins,Ā elliot,Ā shilah,Ā that if they ever need to get away from the city,Ā she already had keys made for them.
but that would be for another time,Ā and now that the weekend has ended,Ā they have to go back home.
we can stay a little longer if you need,Ā josephine tells her,Ā both of them lingering on the large porch as roman loads their bags and the children into the car.Ā itās a courtesy,Ā she knows,Ā but she knows just as well that she means it.Ā she hates pity,Ā hates feeling coddled,Ā but this is different,Ā and it makes her hate how difficult it is to keep herself from crying of gratefulness,Ā if nothing else.
natasha has always been a quiet woman,Ā but it isn't difficult to realize that sheās been quieter than usual.Ā sheās barely said anything these past few days beyond the occasional direction,Ā answer,Ā or soft question.Ā even now,Ā she thinks that her voice would be silent and hoarse if she responded ā but she tries all the same.
āitās alright.ā
josephine reaches for her hand,Ā squeezes,Ā and she smiles.Ā the weather is lovely today,Ā perfect for a sail on the water,Ā something sheād promised phil she would give him.
āi still have something to do.ā
they hug,Ā she presses kisses to the childrensā heads,Ā and natasha watches the car as it disappears beyond the trees.

it is unexpectedĀ Ā Ā . Ā Ā notĀ Ā Ā the Ā Ā kissĀ Ā Ā ,Ā Ā Ā justĀ Ā Ā Ā howĀ Ā Ā softĀ Ā Ā Ā heĀ Ā Ā Ā isĀ Ā Ā .Ā Ā Ā how gentle and tender someone like him can beĀ Ā Ā . Ā Ā āPast self?ā Oh no, heād been that big before, long ago. (Well, perhaps just how long ago was debatable, but that timeline was definitely behind him.) He stared incredulously up at his larger doppelganger, baffled by the odd circumstances.
It was certainly odd --- more than odd that Link was staring down at a mini version of himself, but part of him wasnāt allĀ too surprised with everything heād gone through.Ā āĀ Ā Ā Yes, you do grow up after all,Ā Ā Ā ā Without the help of the Temple of Time, he mentally notes.
ā”ļø Hey, Link! What's your favorite mask? Least favorite?
SEND āā”ļøā AND A QUESTION AND MY MUSE WILL BE FORCED TO ANSWER HONESTLY
āĀ Ā Ā Huh.Ā Ā Ā ā Heād never really thought about favorites before. His gaze shifts to an array of masks as he begins to ponder the question. Delicately lifting up the Goron mask, Link starts mumbling his words,Ā āĀ Ā Ā They all do mean a lot to me⦠how could I pick just one as my favorite?Ā Ā Ā ā With his other hand, he fumbles over the other masks and holds up the Fierce Deity mask. Link stares down at both masks. Both were beloved masks of his, each having their own special meaning to him.
āĀ Ā Ā I think⦠my favorite is my Deku mask. That was my first mask and the most sentimental.Ā Ā Ā ā Now the hard part was over, Linkās thoughtful face twisted into a grimace in a matter of seconds. He knew the answer to the next question.Ā āĀ Ā Ā My least favorite would be the Blast mask. If not used right, it can hurt you. Youāre detonating a bomb on your face. I donāt like using it.Ā Ā Ā ā
oh, yup. here it comes. the unstoppable force of love, dustin lee, is here to give soda a //HUG//. lowkey but the very definition of highkey btw rests his head on hers. "you're pretty rad, y'know. i can't explain how glad i am that you're around again, soda." is said too. he...might be there for a while.
Ā he uh, really insists on this sort of thing, doesnāt he.
āitās not unappreciated, soda thinks furiously. itās a little bit hard through the haze that is her mind whenever dustin touches her, and sheās not sure why sheās even denying her dislike of it when sheās supposed to be denying her like of it, but look the point is she thinks furiously.
āand it spirals like that, with the smell of his shirt and the warmth of his arms and the protective pressure of his body around hers, intoxicating and overheating and overwhelming, and she will never get used to this, will she. sheās not going to get used to dustin being, what was the word, affectionate? yeah, affectionate. nice to her. physically nice to her. hugging her. and, uh, what came after that too, sometimes he did that to her too. those made her especially dizzy. they were nice. what, no they werenāt. she hated them. she hated getting close to him. she wasnāt supposed to get within armās reach of him, the last sensible part of her brain told her furiously, but it wasnāt her blame him because he was getting within arms reach of her,ā¦
āso all this means sheās not quite aware of what sheās doing: sinking into him. her body wasnāt listening to her brain. new law: let go, her brain said. vetoed, dustinās arms said. she didnāt know what that word meant but it sounded pretty nice to her. heart said, you donāt need to know a wordās meaning to know its feeling. and it was right! who ever listened to their brain anyway? heart was the much better choice.
āsheās smiling without realizing it. dustinās arms are warm, she thinks again; he smells nice, she thinks again. his voice is nice and sweet and sheās got one hell of a sweet tooth for it. even if she could think of some choice words for his use ofĀ āradā. dustin lee, future boyfriend: abandoned by the side of the road for the use of an 80ā²s slang term.
āsodaās voice is disgustingly dreamy as she says, Ā Ā āĀ ās pretty nice, yeah. ā

the house is old and the walls are thin.Ā sheās sure the neighbors on both sides caught an earful of shouting earlier that natasha feels stupid and reckless about,Ā regardless of who it was between them that did most of the shouting.Ā still,Ā she shouldnāt have pressed,Ā she shouldnāt have pried,Ā shouldnāt have made an angry man angrier.Ā her mistake.
she washes the evening off,Ā takes out the blue contacts,Ā brushes the dry tangles out of her hair and wonders,Ā silently,Ā why she couldnāt have just gone with a dishwater blonde dye rather than the vibrant gold sheād chosen on a whim.Ā again,Ā her mistake.
somewhere between the bathroom and the bed,Ā it suddenly strikes her how easily and how quickly she had slipped into defensiveness,Ā into the kind of tactical evaluation that only a wife with an unstable husband knows how to do.Ā be unassuming,Ā be demure,Ā donāt escalate,Ā donāt dangle meat in front of the starving lion.Ā even in this,Ā she cannot help that pinprick of acquiescence that maybe he was right,Ā maybe this is all too real,Ā maybe she should act like his god damned wife.
the lock on the bedroom door,Ā she remembers,Ā is broken.Ā heāll want to apologize at some point,Ā natasha is sure of it,Ā but she does not plan to punctuate her caution with forgiveness so soon.Ā if he wants to make his bed,Ā then he can lie in it.Ā if he wants this to feel real,Ā then she isnāt keen on making it easy for him.Ā there are weeks left still to the operation,Ā and even when all is said and done,Ā there will be no forgiving and forgetting unless he grovels because no matter how much they pretend,Ā she is his friend,Ā and she deserves more than being the post that takes the brunt of his problems with a woman who no longer speaks to him.
quietly,Ā natasha takes one of the old wooden chairs sitting unused in the corner and rests it on its hind legs on the floor in front of the door,Ā tucking the top of its back snugly under the knob.
later,Ā she will hear his steps down the hall and hear him try to come in,Ā only to quickly give up and return to the living room.Ā tomorrow,Ā he will apologize over breakfast,Ā and she will tell him we still have a job to do.Ā if he wants her to be her,Ā then so be it.
ā ŠŠŠ.
her head hurts.
everything hurts,Ā in fact.Ā it hurts to even open her eyes,Ā look around at the room,Ā take a deep breathĀ āĀ but she wonāt complain.Ā if she isnāt too horribly concussed and her memory still serves her alright,Ā being in a hospital bed is far better than a grave.
hey.
natasha turns,Ā sees him with a file laid out in his lap while he finishes off a cup of pudding they both know she hates the flavor of,Ā and smiles.Ā her lips are so dry on top of being split that that hurts too.
āhey,Ā yourself.ā
nice work.Ā next time you decide to fall ten stories,Ā let me know so i can at least put down a trampoline.
she laughs,Ā and regardless of how itās always such a painful ordeal to enjoy each otherās jokes when they greet one another after days of unconsciousness,Ā she doesnāt complain about that either.Ā if anything,Ā it gives her a better sense of just how much sheād injured herself.
fractured ribs,Ā broken radius,Ā broken wrist,Ā likely a few dislocations,Ā and other things sheās too tired to figure out herself.
ādid you at least get me the good stuff?ā
he sets his empty cup on the table,Ā and shifts to fish in one of the pockets of his suit jacket thatās hung over the back of his chair.Ā as expected,Ā he presents her with delectably cheap, Ā store-bought and beautiful chocolate pudding,Ā rips the seal off for her and sets it on her tray with a smile so smug she rolls her eyes so far it hurts.
ā Š¢Š Š.
she has the decency not to start interrogating him with the door of his office open.Ā after another briefing,Ā another overstep on hillās part,Ā another stronghold of bureaucracy on a job that she needed to be clean,Ā that he told her would stay clean,Ā natasha is frustrated.
āi thought we agreed that you would keep shield off of this.āĀ she stands at his desk,Ā glowering down at him where he flips through files.
things changed, tasha.Ā just because i have some power doesnāt mean i have all of it ā unlike you, i canātĀ go whine to fury and be taken seriously.
āitās hard for anyone to take you seriously if you turn on a dime like this.ā
his gaze lifts, and the air of the office is suddenly pulled taut.Ā it goes on like this for some time,Ā the volume rising and words becoming more barbed between them.
when he tells her regardless of whatever you wanted to happen on this, iām not going to just let you go and leave you out there all alone,Ā she feels herself snap.
āof course you wonāt,Ā because someone needs to keep an eye on me,Ā and youāre all too willing to leverage this in your favor.Ā you can pretend to be noble all you want,Ā phil.Ā you only follow orders when it benefits you,Ā because at the end of the day,Ā youāre an empty, expensive suit full of nothing but selfishness and greed.ā
it isnāt often that natasha regrets her words,Ā but it takes so little time for the insult to come back and sting her.Ā phil says nothing,Ā nods with that resigned downward curl of his mouth and looks back down at the papers sheād pulled him from.
this is your job,Ā he tells her after a considerable silence too heavy for even her to bear.Ā it makes her sick.Ā if you donāt want it,Ā iāll find someone else to do it.
ā Š§ŠŠ¢Š«Š Š.
they havenāt seen one another all week.
after kernās beautiful showcase of footage from the raft,Ā phil hadnāt gone to her continued hearing,Ā and she hadnāt attended his.Ā isaiah had told her that it wasnāt good for appearances,Ā all things considered,Ā but she didnāt care.Ā if he could be scared or ashamed or whatever the hell,Ā she could be angry.
she has been angry.
so when he tells her he is sorry,Ā that he just wanted to hurt him,Ā that she doesnāt need to explain what leonid did to her,Ā natasha does not care.Ā she tells him,Ā watches him go pale,Ā watches him realize in real time what it is that he has done to her,Ā watches him drop to his knees like some pathetic,Ā penitent sinner.
she had already been hurt,Ā but seeing him now,Ā kneeling before her and begging for forgiveness,Ā she feels the scattered fragments of it splinter into dust.Ā it would have been so much easier if she felt nothing for him,Ā if the apathy with which she had spoken of him when she returned to continue her testimony had continued on when she walked out of the courtroom for the last time.Ā as it is,Ā she cannot contain the care she still has for him regardless,Ā cannot toss away a love that they have spent more than a decade nurturing.Ā heās her friend,Ā and that fact alone makes all of this feel like he has cut her open and let the secrets of her viscera spill out just to say that he could.Ā makes it feel like he has broken her heart just to see if it was possible.
there are tears in his eyes when natasha tells him that he cannot fix this.Ā that he is different,Ā that he is special,Ā that there will be no way for him to undo or pay or remedy what he has done.Ā that when she leaves,Ā they will go about their lives and will not speak to one another again.
it takes all the willpower within her to look away when he slumps back and does not protest.Ā in any other circumstance she might have felt proud to have cowed such a large,Ā proud man.Ā after all of this,Ā after everything,Ā this just makes her feel sick.
āi loved you,Ā phillip,āĀ she whispers after a long moment of quiet.Ā the past tense stings,Ā and a dark part of her is satisfied to know that it stings him,Ā too, no matter how much of a lie it is.Ā as she stands,Ā she looks at him one last time.Ā āi hope you know that.ā
ā ŠŠÆŠ¢Š¬.
āwhat the hell was that?ā
sheās cornered him in an empty and dark conference room,Ā and she doesnāt hide how infuriated she is that heād called her back in prematurely.Ā natasha doesnāt need to ask him why he did,Ā having felt the tension and the bitterness and the misplaced and uncharacteristic jealousy wafting off of him through the comm line when the mark started getting too comfortable.Ā she just wants to hear him say it.
it takes a while,Ā but he tells her i donāt like people touching my stuff,Ā and they both know heās slipped,Ā because when she asks him what he means he backtracks,Ā explains it away,Ā calls her an asset for SHIELD,Ā for the agency,Ā and she knows it isnāt what he means.
this isnāt like him.Ā theyāve play-acted at marriage and jealousy and being territorial for fun,Ā because for two people who get into as much shit as they do for a living,Ā they need to relax.Ā unwind.Ā the last time he brought this into work was damn near twenty years ago.Ā if she werenāt so offended that heād pulled her out of the field so suddenly,Ā sheād more willingly acknowledge her worry.Ā sheād bring up his long silences,Ā his thousand - yard stares,Ā his dwindling memory,Ā the odd things he says in his sleep lately.
she will,Ā eventually,Ā ask him about all of these things.Ā but here,Ā now,Ā she is thinking about the line he has crossed and how it runs parallel to the line he crossed with leonid,Ā with oklahoma,Ā and when he finally does admit to his jealousy,Ā she remembers his promise to her that he would make it all up to her,Ā and she doesnāt want to hear anything else.
āif this is how you show that you can be better, then donāt bother.ā
when she leaves, she slams the door so hard the glass splinters.
the wife really isnāt that good of a cook.Ā sorry ā susan isnāt that good of a cook.Ā she tries,Ā that much is obvious from the severe crease of her brow when she starts becoming frantic in the kitchen,Ā but some people just arenāt meant to figure out what makes something palatable.
the husband is a different story entirely.Ā a beast with the barbecue,Ā a master of stews ; you would never guess the all-american dad in a low-end suburb has a body count well over a dozenĀ ( then,Ā so do they,Ā but theyāre not on this side of an international trafficking ring ).
it was robertās ā or bob,Ā as he likes to be calledĀ āĀ idea that they all had dinner together.Ā natasha and phil had only been in the neighborhood for about a month,Ā posing as irene and william,Ā and bob had told bill in the break room of their real estate office that he cooks up a mean chili that everyone on the block comes over for at least once a week, and you wonāt really be my neighbor until you try it,Ā man.
so here they are,Ā on a friday evening in early spring right after the sun has gone down,Ā having bobās famous chili and susanās painfully average potato salad.Ā itās all tooth-rottingly american,Ā and if it werenāt for what starts happening when everyoneās about three beers in,Ā it might have been a nice night.
you see,Ā bob and susan are about three months out from getting a divorce,Ā because between her gossiping and his secrets,Ā they donāt seem to get along very well.Ā it isnāt a surprise when bob starts looking at irene with a glint in his eye over his bottle when susan asks her about having kids.Ā what does surprise natasha is how tightly wound phil seems to be getting beside her when he does.Ā bob winks when he says something like you shouldnāt be in too much of a hurry while youāre still young and beautiful,Ā and when irene laughs with a humble little scoff and tells him donāt worry,Ā weāre not,Ā bill drapes his arm around the back of her chair.
natasha looks at phil,Ā and beneath his smile she sees something in his eyesĀ āĀ wild, sharp and uncannyĀ ā that she hasnāt seen before.
ā ŠŠŠ.
thereās a tag on the back of her sweater thatās making her itch.Ā it isnāt her sweater,Ā actually,Ā but his:Ā a dull white thing with large red letters that obnoxiously spell outĀ HARVARD,Ā and itās so damn big on her that she feels like sheās being swallowed by a formless creature that smells of dryer sheets.
itās making her itch,Ā but she doesnāt mind.Ā not really.Ā the back of her neck is surely red - raw by now after sitting in it for hours,Ā through dinner and wine and their thousandth rewatch of octopussy,Ā but itās given her something else to think about other than her run-in with matthew and how awful sheās felt all day.
for a while,Ā at least.
she tells phil that sheās going to bed once the movie ends,Ā tells him thank you and goodnight before she heads upstairs to the spare room that theyāve both silently agreed has become her room by now.Ā truthfully,Ā she doesnāt think sheāll be sleeping at all tonight,Ā and already finds herself standing at the floor - to - ceiling windows with her dimly - lit reflection staring back at her while she hears him clean up glasses and plates downstairs.Ā she really does look ridiculously tiny in this sweater.
it has to be ten minutes that pass by her when she hears the door open and sees him come in through the reflection.Ā natasha realizes sheās been chewing the inside of her cheek tender when she turns,Ā abandoning the habit when he approaches and wraps his arms around her without saying a word and without being asked.Ā thatās something sheās come to love about being around him,Ā the fact that they so rarely ever have to speak to each other to know what the other needs.Ā but tonight is different,Ā because when he holds her and she starts to break,Ā starts to cry and wet his shirt with her tears,Ā he tells her in russian that heās got her.Ā that heās here.Ā that itāll be alright.Ā and after a long moment,Ā her sobs become quieter and her shudders stop,Ā and she lets herself calm.
ātell me you love me?āĀ
she almost doesnāt mean to say it.Ā nearly doesnāt,Ā but she is aching and she is hurt and she is sad and it comes out like a wound that needs to bleed out an infection and she does not regret it when she does.Ā āplease.ā
she expects him to hesitate,Ā but he doesnāt.Ā i love you,Ā he says first in english,Ā then russian,Ā then french because itās one of the things he actually sounds fluent saying in the language,Ā and after heās gone through every version he knows how to say,Ā he pulls away to make her look at him just so he can sign it,Ā too,Ā because he knows sheāll laugh.Ā heās good at that.
āi love you too.ā
ā Š¢Š Š.
it takes some time to adjust.
in their more than fifteen years of friendship and intimacy,Ā theyāve never once voluntarily gone more than six months without contact of some sort,Ā if they could help it.Ā assignments,Ā vacations,Ā being off-grid,Ā no matter the reason for separation they hadĀ always found a way,Ā a reason to call even if just to say hi.
after the hearings,Ā the security footage,Ā after leonid,Ā she did not speak to him for seven months and he never dared to reach out,Ā because even after getting him down from the ceiling and bringing him back home from the hospital safe and sound,Ā he figured that you and i are not going to talk for a long time was still something she meant.Ā and then they saw one another again,Ā they spoke again,Ā things were okay again,Ā only for her to get hauled off to the few weeks of hell that was being dropped onto a blacksite by kern.Ā it was no surprise that she needed the time off,Ā that she needed to get the hell out of the country for a while.
so yes,Ā it takes some time to adjust,Ā because after a year away,Ā everything is different.Ā heās different.Ā but when she notices the shadows under his eyes that not even the glasses can distract from,Ā hears just how much more exhausted his sighs are,Ā she pulls him aside and tells him my door is still open for you.Ā you just need to knock.
itās a few days later when he does.Ā he hadnāt called and they havenāt had the time to talk,Ā but she knows itās him by the way his knuckles rap against the door.Ā who else would be brave enough to show up unannounced at ten oāclock?Ā natasha opens it,Ā allows the silence to sit because she doesnāt know what to say to him and he seems not to know if she wants to hear anything from him,Ā before she steps aside to let him through.
the sudden proximity ignites something,Ā and she feels a spark of something warm and familiar and when she catches his cool hand itās out of instinct and out of the insurmountable feeling that sheās really,Ā really missed him.Ā before the door has even fully shut,Ā their fingers intertwine and she pulls him down to kiss him for the first time in more than a year.
they do not speak for the rest of the night.Ā she pulls him close,Ā wraps him up beneath her covers and presses her lips to his head as he sleeps.
ā Š§ŠŠ¢Š«Š Š.
roman had stopped by the rehab center earlier.Ā sheād been glad to arrange the meeting,Ā but seeing him now she cannot help but concede to that small part of herself that wonders why he couldnāt have waited just a bit longer, why he couldnāt have waited until phil was walking completely on his own again to call her.Ā itās odd,Ā how the thought feels selfish to her.Ā it isnāt even herself that she feels so defensive of,Ā but phillip.Ā they have spent nearly every waking moment of the past five months together,Ā one would be forgiven in thinking that theyāve melted into one another,Ā wholly and completely.
itās difficult seeing him like this.Ā the physical changes are one thing ā sheās used to the fading scars and the exhaustion and the way heās grown so much thinner from the near-constant nausea, knowing itāll pass in time ā but the way he does not hide his sadness,Ā how the corners of his mouth pull downward and his eyes do not so easily lift to meet hers are another entirely.
so when she slips into bed beside him and he turns half on his side and half on his stomach,Ā head against her chest and arm slung over her waist,Ā she does not hesitate to wrap herself around him.
ātell me you love me?ā
her eyes open,Ā and suddenly she no longer feels so tired.Ā natasha doesnāt tell him immediately,Ā wondering if he simply needs to hear it after an arduous day of guilt and shame and inadequacies, or if he needs to hear it from her.Ā the difference would change very little,Ā she thinks,Ā except that if it were the latter,Ā she may not be able to dam the tides of what she feels for him the way she has for too long now.Ā her chest tightens with it,Ā and in what is only a few seconds for him,Ā natasha feels every ounce of care she has silently held for him like a well - kept and well - nursed secret crash down onto her with the weight of years.
āi love you,Ā phillip,āĀ she says,Ā finally,Ā shifting to lay her hand against his face to guide his gaze up to look at her.Ā they have told this to one another before,Ā many times in passing,Ā in lighthearted jest,Ā the way that friends and family do because they have been friends and family for a long time.Ā but things have been different and the old thrill of being called mrs. coulson has become something new,Ā and when she tells him that she loves him this time,Ā she means it more than sheās meant anything.Ā āi love you.Ā you know i do.ā
and when she kisses his forehead,Ā he wraps his arm more tightly around her,Ā letting her know that he does.Ā that after it all,Ā he loves her,Ā too.
ā ŠŠÆŠ¢Š¬.
āare you sure you donāt want to try another tylenol?ā
she asks from the couch,Ā head turned to look at him over her shoulder,Ā her legs folded and tucked comfortably beneath her.Ā he says no,Ā just need to rest,Ā and makes his way into the living room,Ā rounding the couch and letting her unfold her legs so he can more comfortably rest his head in her lap when he ultimately lies down with only ten minutes left to when harry met sally.
itās still their first week at the new house.Ā greenport hadnāt been her first choice when they were discussing places to move to,Ā places that could make dream home become forever home ā in fact it hadnāt even made top five ā but it didnāt take very much to convince her.Ā theyād tossed around reasons,Ā itāll still be close enough to headquarters,Ā itās a quiet place and the pets will love it,Ā and the final nail into the ordeal,Ā you always tell me how much youād like to settle down and sail off into the sunset,Ā well this is the perfect place for it,Ā tasha.Ā yeah,Ā she supposes it is.
would have been,Ā anyway.
it takes a bit for him to actually doze off,Ā because the ending is still their favorite,Ā and when harry tells sally about the crinkle above her nose,Ā phil has to crack an eye open and reach up to poke that same spot between natashaās eyebrows to make her laugh like he always does.
at some point,Ā between when you realize you wanna spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possibleĀ and the beginning of the credits,Ā he falls asleep.Ā she knows because his breathing changes and he untenses,Ā like clockwork.
but itās different,Ā this time.Ā itās different because his eyes are still open just enough and when she says his name and asks him if heās trying to sneak a peek at her,Ā he doesnāt respond.
her heart drops into her stomach.
she has him in her arms,Ā holding him up with her on the floor in the next second,Ā phone beside her on the rug with an operator telling her the ambulance will be there soon,Ā asking her questions that she barely knows how to answer because sheās telling phil to please wake up and he isnāt waking up.
the paramedics come and she listens to them speak to one another in the back of the ambulance,Ā trying to stay out of the way in the cramped space while she holds his hand and tries to reconcile his lack of response with his still beating heart.
when they make it to the hospital and tell her she needs to wait outside,Ā it isnāt long before someone comes out to see her.
or maybe it is.Ā she doesnāt know.
weāre very sorry,Ā mrs. coulson.Ā thereās ⦠nothing we can do.
a trickling stream of words unspool themselves between natasha and the doctor that sound like aneurysm,Ā ruptured,Ā common,Ā fatal.Ā braindead.Ā she cannot tell in what order they come,Ā and truthfully she does not think she needs to. Ā heās a neurologist,Ā taller than her but not by very much,Ā must be in his mid-forties with shadows beneath his eyes that make him look older.Ā his hair is short,Ā unassuming,Ā his tennis shoes are clean,Ā but worn,Ā and heās got a modest gold band on his left ring finger.
natasha hears phillipās voice,Ā stop trying to distract yourself,Ā tasha,Ā something that heād often say to her when he noticed her eyes darting around the people around them,Ā taking stock of minute details so she wouldnāt have to deal with whatever was bothering her.Ā he might have said it here,Ā leaned down to whisper it in her ear if he was next to her.Ā if he was alive.
the doctor makes to push open the sliding glass door,Ā pausing with his hand hovering just over the handle as he asks her if thereās anyone she needs to call.Ā anyone they should expect.Ā she nods,Ā and the door quietly hisses open as he steps aside to let her into the dim room.
weāll give you as much time as you need.Ā just let us know when youāre ready.
when the curtain shuts and the door is closed again,Ā natasha finds herself sat on the hard vinyl sofa that doubles as a bed near the window.Ā the machines are loud,Ā and in the whirring and the beeping natasha closes her eyes and keeps hold of whatever sense of control she still has to pull out her phone.
she calls roman first.Ā tells him you need to come up here. itās phil ⦠iāll text you the address and room number ⦠drive safe.
then jess,Ā philās sister.Ā Ā iām at the hospital,Ā with phil.Ā heās ⦠jess,Ā heās.Ā dying.Ā dead.Ā braindead, and itās ā itās real,Ā this time ⦠yeah,Ā iām here.Ā iām here with him.Ā they have him on life supportĀ ā¦Ā no,Ā just me.
and bobbi.Ā hi frankie,Ā baby,Ā is ā is your mama there?Ā thank you,Ā babyĀ ā¦Ā bobbi,Ā hi,Ā can you ā can you and clint come up?Ā i know itās late,Ā i just ā¦Ā no.Ā no,Ā itās phil,Ā heās,Ā um.Ā heās on life support ā¦Ā iām waiting for roman ā¦Ā he had an aneurysm,Ā he was just resting his head in my lap and ā can you come up? please? i donāt ā i canāt ⦠okay.Ā iāll need a ride back to the house ⦠thank you ...Ā can you let everyone know? ⦠okay,Ā thank you. i love you,Ā too.Ā
at some point after she hangs up,Ā she puts one of the arms of the bed down and crawls in next to him.
she doesnāt know what she will tell roman and josephine when they arrive.
she doesnāt think about it.Ā and truthfully,Ā for the next few hoursĀ ( two hours and six minutes with no traffic,Ā which should be the case this late at night.Ā but itās just past 8pm on a tuesday,Ā thereās no cops on the road,Ā and they could push 70, maybe 80, to get into the parking garage in an hour and a half.Ā it will take them at least fifteen more minutes to get up to the ICU ),Ā she wonāt.Ā later,Ā when the nurse comes in to tell her family is here,Ā mrs. coulson,Ā and when they move to the side of the bed opposite of where natasha lies holding onto his still warm,Ā still breathing body,Ā all she will have to say isĀ i wanted to wait for you.
but that doesnāt matter,Ā right now.
a small,Ā selfish and cruel part of her wishes that she had been more tired,Ā that she would have moved to lay behind him and hold him like she often does and fall asleep with him while the film kept on playing. maybe then,Ā she would have slept til morning and could believe that they at least had had this,Ā that they at least were able to fall asleep together one last time.
natasha pretends that he can hear her when she speaks,Ā nestled against his deceptive warmth.Ā she reminds him of how they had talked about the next weekās weather earlier that day,Ā deciding if they could spend their tenth anniversary out on the water,Ā and tells him that the forecast has changed,Ā that it should be sunny and warm and a beautiful day for a boat ride.Ā just the two of them.
itās become a habit, having lunch with her every few weeks ā she checks in because sheās concerned, cooks for her because she wants to make sure she eats, tells her things because she knows she might be lonely. natasha never says just how much she enjoys their time together because lately, spending so long in the penthouse with phil, sheās gotten lonely too. she will never speak of it, how difficult it is, because she thinks she has little right to, and she tells herself that she knew what she was signing up for before things even went bad.
natasha is still upset with him because of this morning. nothing serious, hardly anything surprising, but there's only so many glares and snappy leave me alones that she can take before she starts feeling antsy. and an antsy natasha is an irritated one, and itās taken all her willpower all evening since sheād come back to not act on it, lest she undo months of bobbiās work and throw away several weeks of recovery progress.
she cleans up after dinner, helps him up the stairs, lingers at the edge of the bathroom pretending to fold clothes while he washes and brushes, and steps aside to let him wheel himself into the bedroom. natasha isn't keen on staying lest he get himself into another mood, so she offers the least of what she can offer to get him into bed and as comfortable as he can be. she almost tells him goodnight when she notices it : the heaviness, the weight of his shoulders as he sits half - hunched against the pillows, the sad, sad shape of his expression, so much more vivid than usual. his voice is tired, graveled when he says all i can do is remember. and she forgets her frustrations, her upset, and she sits.
it's not something she's pressed either of them about. she has not dared to pry with josephine, has only pieced together the glances of the young blonde woman coming and going from his place years ago, had gleaned what little she could from what she had mentioned.
we knew each other a long time ago. he wasn't like this at all.
i thought he was married. i thought he was lying to me.
"what were you to each other?" it sounds odd when she voices it aloud. no matter how gentle, how quiet she says it, no matter how soft and distant her hand is when she places it on his lap beneath the covers. "what was she to you?"
