“Fuck,” he swears while David barks from the doorway, his feet tip-tapping against the hardwood anxiously. “It’s okay,” Henry tells him, “really, I have it under control and there’s nothing to be concerned—.”
The sharp trill of the smoke detector cuts him off, and David goes flying into the living room, tail tucked between his legs.
Henry sighs and grabs his phone off the counter and quickly dials 9-1-1.
“9-1-1,” the operator says as Henry starts after David, “What’s the nature of your emergency?”
“I can’t be certain,” Henry begins, “but it’s entirely possible that there’s about to be a fire in my kitchen.”
Or, 5 times Alex comes to Henry's rescue, +1 time Henry returns the favor.

What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?
I keep having these little vignette ideas for Alex and Henry's year-and-a-bit from when Alex asks Henry if he wants to "get the fuck off the continent" all the way through to just before he moves into the Brownstone. Like all these moments which are insignifcant and significant and adjacent and right in the middle of their journey to forever.
At the moment it's just a collection of ideas, little moments, and if it becomes anything more I may actually write it.
34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?
god...way too much. i mean there's a reason so many of my fics feature lawyers, oblivious idiots, characters doing awkward and extremely specific things. if characters in my fics hate a particular thing, chances are I also dislike it. one fun fact is that i actually can't play tennis very well at all, despite writing Love Game. I have been to Hawaii though. I love Hawaii, and I've now sent characters from two different fandoms there in fics.
One extremely specific thing I often write is characters going out for a jog and treating it as if they're in an Olympic track event. That is me. 100% I don't care if you're an 85 year old or an 8 year old I will race you without your knowledge or consent.
40 - I answered here.
41. A fic I read that made me think, "wow I want to write like that"
Quite a few! Recently, I read Wings are Frayed by @iboatedhere with a serving of @pragmatic-optimist and it made me wish I could develop that level of understanding of the characters. The characterisation in this fic is truly something to behold.
The characterisation in this fic by @liminalmemories21 (and a lot of her other canon fics) is also fantastic and inspires me to do better with Tarlos.
I also frequently lurk around @clottedcreamfudge fics wishing I could be as funny and creative as her. She is my muse to make Alex Claremont-Diaz even more unhinged.
The smut that @rmd-writes (and CCF) hauls out my GOD - that's my E rated inspo right there.
There's so many more! But that's just a little taste :)

“You’re late.”
TK is barely able to push the door of the studio open, his one hand holding a tray with two coffees on it and a bag of pastries, his other hand holding onto his camera bag. As he steps through the door, allowing it to close behind him, he turns to throw a glare in the direction of Paul.
TK walks to his own desk, setting everything down on the top before he plucks one of the holiday decorated to-go cups from the tray and grabs one of the pastries out of the bag. “You sent me to get coffee, remember? This is entirely your fault.”
Paul chuckles, taking both of the items from TK and setting them down on his desk. “That’s because I am nothing without my morning coffee. It’s okay, Mrs. Vega isn’t even here yet for the meeting. You didn’t forget about that, did you? Because I sent you four reminders.”
“Of course I didn’t forget.”
It hadn’t been a lie, his entire being had been taken over with nervous energy of meeting with Tommy Vega. She has been one of the best magazine editors in Austin for years now and she was giving TK and Paul a chance of having a Christmas themed spread in one of her magazines. It was huge and he’s not sure he was ready for it. Paul, of course, had convinced him multiple times that he was good enough and that Tommy would be lucky to have his work in her magazine.
Paul must notice his silence and he clears his throat, effectively grabbing TK’s attention. “You’ve got this, alright? Don’t think about anything else except getting that spread. You take good photos, TK.”
TK raises an eyebrow. “Only good?”
Paul rolls his eyes and proceeds to throw a balled up piece of paper at TK. “Quit being an ass.”
(All the prompts are fantastic, I can’t wait to see what you come up with for them)
Here you go Rae, I hope you like it! 🧡

The expanse of empty bed between them felt insurmountable to Carlos.
One of the first things he had learned about TK was that the man could not stay in his own space during the night. He was like a koala; always wrapping himself around Carlos and holding tight. It had been amusing at first: TK had blushed a vibrant red when Carlos had mentioned it the next morning and had tried to stutter out an apology, but Carlos had assured him he found it sweet.
As time went on and sharing his bed with TK became more and more commonplace, he began to find it comforting to have him so close. After a time he had found that he didn’t know how to sleep soundly without the other man pressed against him anymore. He found the warmth of his body against his comforting and the feeling of his breath on his skin soothing. The rhythm of his steady breathing had become a sound to lull him to sleep and he soon came to dread the nights when their shifts didn’t line up.
But this was not one of those nights. Tonight they were both here, both in their bed, but TK was carefully and purposefully on the other side; a world away from Carlos. He hated it.
He twisted to tell his boyfriend as much, grimacing as a flash of pain reminding him why the paramedic had insisted on giving him space as he let his head fall back onto the pillow in frustration. He knew why TK had made it a point to distance himself tonight, but that didn’t mean he had to like it. What’s more, the absence of TK’s deep steady breathing told him he wasn’t the only one laying awake.
“I’m not going to break, you know.”
His words, though softly spoken, cut through the quiet of their bedroom like a knife.
He turned his head in time to see TK turn to face him as well, his eyes still so full of concern and the fear that hadn’t seemed to leave him ever since that horrible moment this afternoon.
“You were shot, Carlos,” TK reminded him bluntly.
“Barely,” Carlos countered. “It hit my vest and I’m fine.”
TK didn’t even dignify that with a response, looking instead towards Carlos’s chest with a raised eyebrow. Carlos followed his gaze down, taking in his bruised chest with a grimace, the violent purples and reds standing out starkly against his skin.
“You’re lucky you didn’t break any ribs,” TK all but whispered, “or that there was no internal bleeding. Getting shot in the vest is still getting shot, Carlos. You need to heal.”
“I do that so much better when you’re with me though.”
“I’m right here,” TK reminded him with a frown, “and I’m not going anywhere.”
“No,” Carlos objected. “I mean with me. I don’t like to sleep without you. Especially not tonight.”
Today had been a shitshow and at the end of it all Carlos was in pain and still stuck with the lingering fear of everything that had happened and the shadows of what could have as the adrenaline faded away. What’s more, he knew TK was likely feeling the same way. He had been there, he had seen it all. As bad as it had felt to be the one in it, he couldn’t imagine what it must have been like to watch. He had a feeling that TK craved the comfort of closeness as much as he did but was trying to deny himself because he thought it was what was best for Carlos, and TK always did what was best for Carlos.
“You can’t tell me you don’t want it too,” he said softly and saw some of TK’s resolve waver.
“You’re still hurt, Carlos,” he reminded him again. “You need to heal and you don’t need me making it worse.”
“You won’t make it worse,” he assured him. “I trust you. Please?” he added after a second, smiling when TK finally relented and moved closer. Carlos shifted so TK could slide into the space behind him and carefully wound his arms around Carlos’s waist, taking care to avoid his bruised and battered chest.
“Let me know if this hurts,” TK told him. “I mean it, Carlos.”
“It doesn’t,” Carlos assured him, gratefully melting into the embrace, “I promise. Not having you close to me hurt more. This feels better.”
And it did. The familiar weight and warmth of his boyfriend beside him settled over him like a well-worn coat. Some people had weighted blankets, Carlos had TK. It was his presence and touch that allowed him to sleep soundly, even on a good day. Today? It would have been impossible without him; bruises be damned.
With TK pressed against him, Carlos was able to let some of the lingering fear and stress of the day fall away. He had had a close call today; they both had. He had a near miss today; a brush with death. For a few awful moments, he had thought that maybe all of this would be over; that he had missed a chance to see their future through. But today hadn’t been the end and though he was beyond grateful, he was still shaken. It had made him think of some things; had put planning for the future in a new light.
But those were concerns for tomorrow. Tonight all he wanted was to seek comfort in the arms of the man he loved and forget that the rest of the world existed. Tomorrow they could deal with both the fallout and the future. They would face whatever came next together, and Carlos couldn’t ask for anything better than that.
