It's orange shirt day to support survivors of residential schools but personally why are we just wearing orange shirts one day and think that's enough and gives us a pass to forget about the survivors every other day of the year, is anyone actually supporting these survivors who fell into alcohol abuse and then abused their children leaving another generation mentally messed up due to years of abuse that was normalized? Does anyone really care about residential school survivors? Why is there a residential school still standing less that an hour and a half away from where I am currently? Imagine the bodies decayed and buried just outside that building, imagine the survivors who drive past the building where their childhood was ripped away from them daily, they're all wearing orange shirts but does anyone really care?
I'm rant
I'm native. I'm hella native, All my fam is hella native. I came out white as fuck. I'm the whitest person in my family and if I tell someone I'm native they don't believe me. It got to the point where I stopped identifying as native because people would call me a liar and tell me that there was no way because I've always been super pale. I basically became ashamed of my background because I didn't want people telling me I was wrong, and so I ended up whitewashing myself so I was who people thought I was supposed to be basically, and here I am, 19 and I'm finally okay with who I am. It took me over 10 years of my life to finally accept my cultural background because fucking white people made me feel like I wasn't supposed to be what I am.
Yes I'm pale
But that doesn't make me any less of a native than the rest of my family.
