NP ^^ The reason why I’m passionate about the issue in the first place is because I had been following DQ11 news all the way from the time the first Japanese trailers came out, and I became super excited about her character when information about her was revealed including that she uses female pronouns and has a female name. It was all but confirmed that she was a trans woman, or transfeminine.
LGBT+ identities and pronouns are different in Japan of course, and should not be examined the same as with Western norms. But further supporting the idea was the fact that she can use whips, which are usually perceived as a feminine weapon in video games, and she appeared to have many attacks which are traditionally given to women in DQ games, like in her charm skill tree. Then when the game officially came out in Japanese it was very clear, with her explicitly calling herself a woman, and having an arc that involves her father deadnaming her, and I know Erik refers to her explicitly as a woman in Japanese as well. But when the localized versions of the character names came out closer to the English release date... it was really disheartening to see that they changed her name to a male one. When I saw that, I knew immediately that the localization team was going to try to erase her identity as a woman. So, out of respect to her original identity, I like to spread awareness of how the localization botched her character and prevented us from having canon trans rep overseas. She is not perfect representation, because the game does frame her in problematic ways a few times, but I think for the most part she is very positive and likeable, waaay better than the shit you see in most mainstream RPGs. The problematic elements could have been easily removed in the localization too when you think about it, but instead they changed her to a fucking man. :I Anyway, yeah... most people calling her Sylvia are doing it because they’re familiar with the shitty transphobic+sexist localization decision and choose to ignore it, like me. Some others use neutral pronouns and the more neutral “Sylv” as a sort of middle ground.

Zelda has barely gotten the front door open when an entirely nerveless Link is shoved into her arms. “What—”
“I believe this is yours,” Teba says.
Link moans weakly as Zelda struggles to hold him up. His hair is plastered to his forehead with sweat, his skin pale and clammy despite the heat radiating off of him. Zelda looks up at Teba in alarm. “What happened to him?”
Teba shrugs. “He’s sick.”
“Link doesn’t get sick.”
“Well, he got sick,” Teba replies, ruffling his feathers. “And I’m getting sick of dealing with it, so he’s your problem now.”
Link collapses a little, fisting his hands in Zelda’s dress and almost dragging down her bodice in the process; she yelps and straightens herself, her knees almost buckling under his weight as she tries to keep them both upright. “Are we still flying?” he mumbles absently. “It feels like we’re still flying.”
“You flew him here?” Zelda hisses at Teba, who merely shrugs again.
“I threw up twice,” Link offers helpfully.
