Surprisingly, these aren’t fan characters- These are actually fan revamps of a team of four element themed characters from the Fleetway Sonic the Comic! Called the Fundamental Four, they’re obviously a parody on the Fantastic Four, but with elements as a theme specifically. IIRC they’re considered villains, or at least rivals of team Chaotix, whose elemental affinity is used against them to seal them into a clay vessel, at which point they’re never seen again.
So I was like... well... other cool element creatures like chaos, mephiles, iblis, etc all get really rad designs... What if I used ‘Fundamental four escape from their vessel’ as an excuse to give them designs that look a little more like the other energy creatures of the sonic series? You can probably see it in me stealing mephiles’ legs for squall and iblis’ body shape for gravel the most.
Also I just like the idea of cool matching masks! If the diamond cutters can do it, so can they. >:3c
