I'm not very familiar with this story, but as far as I know the earliest (surviving) mention of Zephyros as Apollo's rival responsible for the death of Hyakinthos comes from Palaiphatos' „On Unbelievable Tales” 46 (maybe late 4th century BCE):

„Hyacinth was a beautiful and noble youth from Amyclae. Both Apollo and Zephyr saw him and were smitten by his beauty; both competed to win his affection. Apollo showed off his archery skills, and Zephyr sent a wind. Apollo approached Hyacinth with joy and singing; but Hyacinth felt anxious and fearful around Zephyr, so he shared his affection with Apollo. Because of this, Zephyr grew jealous and plotted his revenge. Later on, when Hyacinth was training with Apollo, (something he was too afraid to do with Zephyr), Zephyr maliciously struck down the discus that Apollo had thrown; it struck the youth, and he died. The earth could not erase the memory of such a tragedy, and so in honor of the youth, it created a flower with the name Hyacinth, and inscribed the first letter of his name on the petals of the flowers.”

More rarely it is Boreas who plays that role instead of Zephyros (Servius on Vergil's Eclogues 3.63, First Vatican Mythographer 115, Second Vatican Mythographer 208).

HYAKINTHOS was a handsome young Spartan prince loved by the gods Apollon & Zephyros (The West-Wind). Zephyros however, grew jealous and one day, as Apollon and Hyakinthos were playing discus, blew the discus off course causing it to strike Hyakinthos and killing him. The desperate and grieving Apollon then transformed the dying youth into a larkspur/delphinium flower (hyakinthos in Greek) which he inscribed with the wail of mourning "AI, AI."

Hyakinthia festival saved me... The day when i discovered that Hyakinthos was resurrected in Spartan tradition was a very happy day ✨

I love the fact that he was worshiped together with Apollo in Amyklai, Sparta. Is theorized that he was a pre hellenic vegetation god in that region, but when Apollo's cult came, they shared the cult. I mean, is not the story of a god's cult replacing another. Apollo(n) and Hyakinthos shared the cult, they were worshiped together, even as one, as "a fusion", there's a four armed statue of Apollo in a temple in Amyklai and some scholariast believed it was a fusion between Apollon and Hyakinthos. I really love that 🥺💙

Hyakíntha Service

Hyakínthia honors the myth of Hyacinthus, the lover of Lord Apollo who was admired for his beauty and athleticism. This joyous event pays homage to romantic love, growth through change, and the wonder of nature.

This year, the Temple of Hyacinthus will be hosting religious services through a series of posts that will include prayers, the recitation of myths, and Ritual Speeches.

There will also be posts regarding celebration preparation - such as traditional attire, modern rites, and even some recipes!

What if he met these two BEFORE they became Apollo and Hermes' lovers and got along really well and tight and like Vasant had to watch Hyakinthos die and he was like as distraught as he was when Kama died, but he had to comfort Apollo and so didn't express himself that well, but when he was alone he'd probably break down.
