i know agathon died pretty young at like 48 (just barely outliving alcibiades on the timeline) but i read some source the other day that said pausanias likely died shortly after. literally how fucked up. imagine you're some lawyer in your early 30s and you get assigned this poetic boy and youre like okay cool i'm his lover i'll take care of him great 🫡💅and then you watch him grow up and become successful and you're supporting him and caring for him the entire time, and he builds this whole life and you remain by his side, and the two of you support each other. then he decides he wants to leave the country for his job and you pack your entire fucking life up and go follow him so you can remain together. you establish a brand new life for yourself, even though you now orbit him the way he once orbited you. and you feel like he'll probably outlive you because now you're in your sixties or seventies, and he's still only in his forties. but something happens and he dies. then you're left wondering why he had to, or why you didn't, and now you're alone in another country without the person you loved and abandoned your life to remain with. what happened to agathon!! what happened to both of them actually! was his death so uneventful that there isn't even a tiny anecdote? sobs

Oh, by all the gods...when we finally manage to gather for breakfast together, it is truly an experience. Deiphobos and Agathon are almost always late, as they seem to find better uses for the night than sleep. Troilus is a phenomenon unto himself, if you are not quick enough, the table is cleared before you have even taken your seat.
Pammon and Polydorus ensure no one drifts back into sleep, as they can speak without pause from the first light of dawn. Kassandra and Helenos are quieter by comparison..though they have been known to wake me in the middle of the night, convinced morning must be near, simply so I might prepare them porridge.
Polyxena, for her part, has given up meat, and the look she casts across the table if we did not, would make one think she intends to turn us all to stone. I cannot say I would recommend such a gathering to an outsider…though I would not trade it for anything.
I think we should replace all essays with yaoi of our favorite philosophers and playwrights arguing #embracetradition
