Attina had stayed the night at the apartment with Andrina.
She hadn’t slept much.
When she’d gotten back to the house, early the next afternoon, everything was still. Daddy was gone to some meetings at Triton Enterprises. Benjamin had the weekend off to go on a trip with his boyfriend. Andrina was at the apartment and Ariel was at Jim’s. Adella had gone off for the day--to play practice, Attina thought. Aquata was with Thomas. Arista was in the music/sun room. She’d poked her head in, but Arista had smiled and waved her off--
And Attina had believed her when she’d said she was alright.
Melody had finally moved back to her own place. Attina had poked her head in before she’d left, but the girl really didn’t have anything to do with this and was getting a little better besides.
Which just left Alana.
Attina grabbed the biggest glass she could find and filled it to the brim with ice and water. Grabbed a few aspirin. Some saltines and peanut butter and headed up to Alana and Aquata’s room.
She knocked gently and then pushed the door open. Alana was sprawled out on the bed, on top of the covers. The curtains were closed. It was an innocent, peaceful, young Alana that not many people got to see.
Attina tip-toed into the room and set the glass of water and peanut butter and saltines and aspirin down on the messy nightstand. (Not thinking about that right now, gosh it was so messy. Okay, maybe she could just--she started straightening it, going quietly.)
She got distracted cleaning and went about putting things back in their proper place, including laundry in the hamper. It only took her about fifteen minutes and by the time she was done, the room was 70% cleaner and she could let out a breath as she sat down on the edge of the bed next to her little sister.
“Guppy,” she whispered, leaning over to move Alana’s dark hair back from her face. She was still wearing her makeup. Hadn’t Attina taught her to always take it off before bed?
“Guppy, it’s almost two o’clock.”
