Oh, it's.... It's November?! Wow!! Have a spooky Egg! I think their name is officially Humfrey, but they go by Frey. They're a witch! Just not always the uh, pointy hat kind.

So the Good Magician - Humfrey puts people through 3 trials usually centered around helping the person realize they don’t want the answer but each trial has a solution that doesn’t always spring to most minds. He wants people getting through that can think and are determined and in exchange for getting through he asks for 1 year of service or equivalent adventure to be completed.

So he could ask for you to work at his castle for a year as his cleaning staff or have you go on a dangerous quest that you were more than likely going to end up on anyway and could easily save all of Xanth.

He asked The Gorgon for 1 year of service to take care of and clean up after him/the castle before giving her the answer she was inquiring about.

Her Question was along the lines of “Will you be my Husband?”

He had her play castle maid for him for a year before answering in case her question changed.

This let her get used to how he is and decide for sure that she wanted to marry him.

He wasn’t exactly expecting her to stick it through and still want to be with him after all the socks, dirt, grime, and ect.

He said yes.

He somehow ended up with like 5 1/2 wives?

What I’m getting at is...

I think Humfrey is a massive introvert who puts up literal (ever changing) barriers and then makes (some) people wait a year for an Answer unless the Question lead to a Quest or if the Question is fine to answer immediately then get the year of service.

He ended up with 5 1/2 wives...who all love him and happily trade off to be with him in turn. The rest I think reside in basically Hell.
