"Humanity Project" – Prologue
When I first wake up, everything I see is white, and dread takes over me.
"Lilith?" I hear a voice ask. I look to the side and find a boy with a worried expression on his face. His long, dark curls fall on his bruised face and shoulders, and he looks so small, so fragile.
"Mike." I mumble, eyes widening in relief. I throw myself at him to hug him, careful not to hurt him. I feel tears pricking my eyes, so I tighten my grip on him. I feel him do the same. "It's okay." I mutter in his ear. "It's okay, we're alive." His tears wet my neck, but that doesn't stop me from reassuring him. "We're alive."
"Lilith!"
I snap my head up, pulling Mike behind me in a protective manner. "Who-" I start, but cut myself when I recognize the boy at the door. "Ethan?" I get up too quickly, and my legs give up, making me fall over. Ethan comes rushing over to me, lifting me up onto the bed.
"Don't- don't do that, you're still weak." Ethan scolds me, pulling the covers over my cold body.
"I'm fine." I say, but I don't fight him on it, knowing it's worthless.
"A literal building fell over you. You're anything but 'fine'." He places his hand on my forehead, checking my temperature. His hazel eyes swirl with worry, but it eases a little when he confirms I don't have a fever.
"How did you manage to get out alive, anyways?" Mike asks curiously.
"I... I think The Bug activated..." I say quietly, and both Mike and Ethan look at me with wide eyes.
"The- The Bug?"
I swallow the lump in my throat before answering. "Y- yeah, I think."
