When the first few Equestria Girls movies came out, it held promise for the franchise. With the introduction and development of reformed villain Sunset Shimmer, the introduction of the Dazzlings, and the ongoing plot of Equestrian magic leaking into the human world.

Now, this isn’t to say that Equestria Girls was perfect. Transforming the main aspects of the mane six’s personalities to fit high school tropes never felt 100% right. But the premise behind EQG and the plot was interesting enough that it was worth following in the beginning.

As time went on, however, it became clear that the writers had no clear direction for the plot nor any lore nor explanation for the rogue magic in the human world. I understand that many magic systems in kids’ shows do not have well explained magic systems, but the writers didn’t even seem like they were even trying. After a while it just seemed that the original plot was dropped and the problem of magic appearing in the human world was never resolved.

Instead, they kept on expanding the cause of magic in the human world. At first, the explanation was that Sunset Shimmer brought magic into the human world by bringing the element of magic into a non-magical world. After the events of Legend of Everfree, they showed the cracked portal connecting the two worlds as an explanation for the magic leakage. This plot point was was also dropped, and from then, we kept on seeing random portal’s leading to Equestria and magical artifacts accidentally fallen into the human world. While these plot points were intriguing at first, none of our questions were ever answered.

Even the movies lost there shine. From The Friendship Games onward, the framing of every movie became repetitive: regular human stumbles across magical artifact. They use artifact to harm Sunset Shimmer/Hugh school students/innocent bystanders. Humane 7 pony up and laser beam the villain, making them become immediately remorseful.

I do not know if there was a change in staff during the airing of Equestria Girls, or if the writers themselves became bored with the story that they were creating, but the plot of EQG clearly lost its direction, and became boring as a result. And the tragedy is, they had many established characters to push the story along instead of creating multiple new characters for each episode. Which leads me to…

The Dazzlings.

Whether you agree with those of us who feel that the Dazzlings had the potential for redemption, or not, there is no denying that they were underused and wasted. Instead of creating random humans attempting to use magic that they didn’t understand for every plot, imagine if they had the Dazzlings, three Ancient Equestrian beings that understands how Equestrian magic works, stumble across Equestrian magic and use it to get revenge on the Rainbooms? Wouldn’t that be much for interesting then creating many original characters that have no plot importance nor are ever seen again (with the exception of Juniper Montage and the Crystal Prep girls).

What makes the Dazzlings do appealing to many fans, I think, are their distinct personalities. Sonata Dusk is the goofy one, Aria Blaze is the serious one, and Adagio Dazzle is the scheming, unquestioned, leader. There is so much that could have been done with their characters given what we know of them. FIM, the IDW Legends comics, and fanfiction writers have done more with the Dazzlings than Equestria Girls ever did. They only appeared in the Time Twirler episode as red herrings and for fan service. Clearly, the only purpose that the EQG writers had for them was to make Sunset Shimmer look good.

Now, the final problem that I want to discuss, is this: The elements of Harmony. Yes, I already discussed the lack of explanation for equestrian magic running rampant in the human world, but now, I want to discuss the bearers of elements of harmony. It is established and confirmed in FIM that the bearers of the elements of harmony is meant to be a group of six friends. However, for the sake of inducting Sunset Shimmer into the friend group, they make her a seventh element bearer.

Now, Sunset Shimmer is one of my favorite characters and I enjoy her development throughout the EQG franchise. I love it when shows are willing to be flexible enough to expand the core friend groups. But I don’t like how they messed with the lore of the elements of harmony, just to carve out a path for Sunset. We learn in the FIM season 7 finale, “Shadow Play”, that the Pillars of Equestria created the elements of harmony. Again, a group of six ponies. This lore is only confirmed further in the IDW comics that start on the first day of Twilight’s reign over Equestria, where Twilight’s friends discover trees of harmony that are also channeled by a group of six friends.

According to the director of Equestria Girls, the elements of harmony in the human world have a seventh element that Equestria’s element of harmony doesn’t have. But this explanation is not enough. The human world had no magic before Sunset Shimmer entered it. The Elements of Harmony are native to the world that Equestria is located in. There is no reason as to why the human world would have a seventh element except one: to include Sunset Shimmer in the friend group. This yet again shows how Equestria Girls was written without any thought to its parent media or any serious plot.
