Rapunzelâs treatment of Varian in âThe Alchemist Returnsâ will always bother me.
A fourteen year old boy lost his father.
Let that sink in.
And how does the protagonist respond when she meets him for the first time since throwing him out into a snowstorm? Not with apologies, or attempts to make amends, but with confusion that Varian is more concerned about saving his fatherâs life then saving Corona. Then wanting what she wants.
Now, we could spend all day going over the reasons why she is unable to feel empathy for such a tragic loss: she was isolated from society for most of her life, has never had a loving parent, has never experienced loss, etc.., yes, she saw Gothel die. But that was her abuser. And Eugene was dead for only a few brief minutes before being resurrected. So Rapunzel has never truly experienced what itâs like to live without someone.
While this might be understandable given her upbringing, it still is not excusable. Especially given the fact that this is not addressed as a flaw of hers within the narrative. And why isnât this addressed as a flaw within the narrative? Because the executive producer of TTS is an egotistical narcissist who likely also doesnât understand empathy, and as such, does not have the self awareness to see Rapunzelâs lack of empathy as a flaw that needs to be corrected. One cannot write an empathetic protagonist if they are an unempathetic person themselves.
i really think this is a flaw of the writing because rapunzel IS meant to be an empathetic person, i feel like its very out of her character to not have empathy for varianâs situation. i think it was more so that she was being given an impossible task of trying to protect the kingdom and was trying to deal with it the best she could. however, the writing is really doing her dirty after the storm because its not until like 3 episodes later that king frederic mentions they sent people to check on varian and assures rapunzel hes fine, even though hes straight up lying. i think king frederic is really the culprit in abandoning varian and the series DEFINITELY doesnât do enough to hold him accountable
Exactly. That is precisely why itâs so frustrating to watch! The problem is, even if we understand that the storm was difficult and that Rapunzel was under a lot of stress that day, the moment Varian reappears in âThe Alchemist Returnsâ, she still is reluctant to help him. Thereâs a difference between wanting to help someone and not being able to director circumstances, and not wanting to. Rapunzelâs behavior in âThe Alchemist Returnsâ gives the impression of the latter. While Fredric was definitely responsible for a large part, if not most, of what happened, Rapunzel knew that Varian needed help during the events of âQueen for a Dayâ, and never visited him in Old Corona after her parents returned, and never showed any willingness to help even after finding out about the guards and Quirinâs encasement. And that is on her.
As I mentioned above, I think Rapunzel being written as unempathetic is in large part due to Chris Sonnenburg being a narcissist. You canât write an empathetic character if you are unable to feel empathy yourself.
Is it fair to say that even if Rapunzel had checked on Varian or at least sent people to do so, he probably wouldâve still done what he did? Heâs not a bad kid but heâs got a history of not thinking things through, had just lost his dad and blamed her so he wouldnât have to admit it was his fault, plus he was still a teenager and we all know they can make stupid choices.
i agree lowkeyâŚ
would rapunzel checking up on varian changed anything ?
yes
no
depends
I believe it would be have. Yes, teenagers make stupid choices, but with the right guidance and support, they can learn to make better choices. What Varian went through post Queen for a Day would have been traumatic for anybody, even adults. Emotional support during the grieving process is essential to getting through it. But on top of dealing with grief, Varian was accused of attacking Rapunzel and being hunted down by guards. Had Rapunzel helped him, then she could have cleared up the rumors. A lot could have been changed had Rapunzel been more proactive in helping Varian.
Cassandra: Am I the bad guy?
Me: You kidnapped a child and put them in a tower, Gothel!
Every time a live-action remake fails, my delusional ass starts hoping itâll lead to Disney finally deciding to stop making that crap. So as you can imagine, the live-action Moana got my dumb hopes up againâŚbut then I was reminded that we still have the live-action Tangled coming up đŤ đŤ đŤ
Sadly I can see the live-action Tangled making loads of moolah considering how many times Iâve seen people excitedly making fancasts for the film đŤŠđŤŠđŤŠđŤŠđŤŠ
You know that âcanât stand her fake ass/me and the bestie!â meme?
Thatâs how it feels seeing people talk about live-action remakes sometimes, one minute itâs âugh, not another one, give it a rest, Disney đâ then the next minute itâs âOMG *insert actor here* WOULD BE SO PERFECT AS LIVE-ACTION *insert character here*!!!â Youâre part of the problem, my dudes đŤŠ
I also remember that the live-action Lilo and Stitch is getting a sequelâŚI forget any other live-action remakes/sequels to live-action remakes are planned. But it has to stop eventuallyâŚit has toâŚ

basically my favorite thing to do is imagine The Character in some sort of situation of terrible emotional turmoil. itâs like enrichment for me

Varian is my fave TTS character, but Rapunzel is still my fave Tangled character... Yes, this makes sense to me.
I get where youâre coming from. I found it really hard to like TTS!Rapunzel. She just felt like a completely different person than the girl from the movie. She went from âquirky, lighthearted girlâ to âgeneric action hero.â Any relatability that she might have had from the movie was just..stripped away. She lacks the compassion that she had in the original movie. The series gave me zero reasons to root for her as a protagonist.
I feel like simply calling JK Rowling a transphobe isn't strong enough anymore. Like. This is not your grandpa calling you by your deadname at a restaurant kind of transphobic. This is her wanting to eradicate all trans people (with an extra special hatred towards trans women specifically). This is her trying just that by personally funding transphobic hate groups with millions to push around laws in the UK. It is not hyperbolic to call her a dangerous, genocidal maniac.
It's not about cancelling a problematic writer. It's about literally trying to save lives by denying her as much money and power as possible.
She's a Nazi.
She's a part of the Neo-Nazi cabal formally headed by Epstein.
She doesn't give a shit about women's rights or protecting abused girls. That's the fig leaf she tries to hide behind as she works to dismantle democracy on behalf of her benefactors/cult.
there's nothing to argue about. they are the fire nation couple

I never thought shippers could make me dislike a ship that I was never interested in even more, but hey, here it is:
To be clear, I donât think that all Eleteo shippers are like this. But it feels like Iâve been seeing a lot of Eleteo shippers throwing tantrums over the internet lately. And these comments saying that they are going to âforce their religionâ on the above commenter are really disturbing. Shipping should be fun, and forcing your ship upon other people is rude and inconsiderate without caring whether or not the above commenter likes your ship or not is sickening. And I hate people saying comments like âItâs supposed to be Elena and Mateo!â, when itâs not even a canon ship!
And you want to know where all these comments were posted? On shots of Carla and Mateo dancing together in the finale. In other words, these people arenât just throwing a temper tantrum on the internet, theyâre doing it specifically to hate on Carteo. And thatâs what gets me. Itâs one thing if you simply donât ship Carteo, or prefer Eleteo. Everybody is entitled to their own ship. But if youâre promoting your ship just as a way to be hostile towards another ship, then thatâs unacceptable.

People who hate/are mad at Elena for the way she treated Esteban in s3 give me such an ick...
Like, God forbid Elena has reasonable human emotions after finding out her cousin is partly responsible for her parents getting murdered right in front of her eyes. Not to mention how he kept the truth from her for years and technically never told her, because Elena found out by accident.
One of my fave things about s3 is how Elena got to unload all her anger on Esteban. The narrative never forced her to "hold back" because "he's family". He had to earn her forgiveness.
THIS. It drives me crazy just how far fans are willing to bend backwards to excuse Esteban for his actions throughout the show. And yes, Elena could have handled the trial better, but Esteban did an awful job at defending himself. People need to stop blaming everyone but Esteban for Estebanâs own problems.
There is also the fact that first time she was told the truth she didn't believe it and instead of owning up to it he took the out she accidentally offeted to him.
