Dennis is Amy's husband and Robby's wife.
What Dennis does at Amy's farm
Itâs sundown by the time Dennis greets Amy on the farmhouse porch.
âLong day at work?â She asks.Â
âNo, actually,â Dennis scratches the back of his head and avoids her gaze. âI saw some fallen fence posts on my drive up. Guess I couldnât help myself. Old habits die hard.â
Amy gives him an unsurprised sort of smile. âYou know you donât have to do that. My dad wouldâve gotten to them eventually.â She touches his arm lightly, expression jittering into one of suppressed excitement. âI have a surprise for you. I will have it ready for you once youâre washed up.â
âSure,â Dennis breathes. He likes surprises, especially ones from Amy. They stand just before the screen door for a moment, both giddy with nervousness and anticipation, before Dennis points inside and says, âI willâIâll go inside now.âÂ
Dennis suspects that the Miller farmhouse had been in sore need of improvements even before Teddyâs sudden death. The sole bathroom, for instance, has a shower that sputters out only lukewarm water. Thatâs one of the many things Amy insists her dad or one of her uncles or brothers will see to, something that Dennis shouldnât break a sweat over. âItâs dirty work,â she usually says with a shudder. One of the faults in the bathroom that Dennis isnât so regretful about is the mirror: it is so old that his reflection is distorted behind a permanent layer of white fogginess bordered with orange rust. He can only see his own shape. No features. Nothing defining. It is marginally more bearable than usual.Â
The dayâs sweat washed away, he steps into Amyâs bedroom. Sheâs waiting there, holding something behind her back. âClose your eyes,â she tells him. Dennis indulges her. âAnd put your hands out.â He feels fabricâsoft but in a firm way, definitely not newâbeing placed into his palms. A bundle of it. âNow open up.â
The first thing he sees is Amyâs tight, eager smile. She seems fit to burst with excitement. He looks down to the gift in his hands and his chest swells withâsomething. The fabric is a beautiful blue and white gingham. As sweet and summery as a picnic blanket. He unfolds it, holds it up for full viewing, and he tries to take in the fact that Amy has gifted him a dress.
âAmy, I told you not to buy me anything,â he says quietly. He is barely aware of his own words, so transfixed he is by the dress.Â
âI made it myself. I-I knew none of mine would fit you and Iâve been needing a use for this fabric for so long now.â Her smile turns gentle, caring. âDo you like it, Dennis? Please will you try it on?â
âI⌠I like it so much.â Itâs the kind of dress his Sunday school teacher wouldâve worn. It resembles several of the ones heâs admired on Amyâs washing line. Itâs the kind of thing heâd wear if he wasâif heâd been bornâifâ
Itâs too much.Â
âThank you, Amy,â he says, trying to sound strong. âI really⌠I canât express how much this means to me. But I canât wear it. Not yet.â It is a weak, pathetic, entirely honest admission.Â
âThat's okay,â Amy whispers. âIsâIs it nice just to hold it?âÂ
Dennis nods, bringing the fabric close to his body. âOh, God, yes.â Itâs holding it, knowing that itâs his, knowing that Amy made it specially for him. These things are overwhelmingly enough.
hii!! me again and YEAH that was what i was thinking about, truly a genius
huckleamy definitely opens some doors up and honestly i donât get why amy gets hated on so much (i mean, i do know why people dislike her i just think the reasoning is shit) as much as i donât believe amy is using himâthe idea that both of them are using eachother in some way is just so good
Hello again. Although I aim not to give attention to vitriol, I simply struggle to understand the Amy hate. We hardly know her, and all the things we do know about her evoke great pity from me. Despite the fact that we will likely never earn a balanced account of their relationship (owing to the show's format and inherent limitations), I believe it would be quite right to understand that any sense of one character using another is not done with malicious intent but rather is an expression of homesicknessâhomesickness for stability, familiarity, farming. When interpreting them in this way, the potential of a romantic or platonic tone to their relationship really does not matter (though, as you already know, I believe that it can add some additional flavour). For this reason, I find Dennis and Amy incredibly compelling, and I am glad to know that others feel similarly.

the amyâs husband and robbyâs wife post is so real in that i fully believe that dennis would date amy if sheâd ask but heâd also go with robby to be like and anchor for him and thus cheating on both but heâd just keep thinking âiâm just helping, iâm just being usefulâ and that kinda starts the mindset that aslong as he helps people it doesnât matter how
(bonus points if heâs actually not even romantically interested in either of them)
We are of the same mind, Anonymous. You might be interested in this post. I would like to point out that it remains unedited since its postingâhuzzah to me for correctly guessing Theo's name, even if it was the most obvious choice.
I rather like Huckleamy. It brings forth many delicious conflicts. I like the image of them nervously and quickly sharing a kiss, Amy anxious because she still loves Teddy so deeply, Dennis worried because he thinks he might be gay. There's much to think about in terms of heteronormativity and perhaps also Christian political conservatism. And that's without even considering Robby's influence.
Much to think about.
