Jazz on the Square featuring Okra

Join us Friday April 6th to ring in a new season of Jazz on the Square, featuring local artists Okra! Okra, like the vegtable, "is music for the soul." They're not your typical R&B group. They play an eclectic mix of 70's, 80's, pop, and jazz sounds. Come downtown to hear the talent of Simone Mack of Spartanburg, SC (vocalist), Josh McDowell of Gaffney, SC (keyboardist), Kenny Shider of Spartanburg, SC (bass guitar), and Tromell Blassingame of Greenville, SC (drummer and co-founder). They have shared the stage with performing artists such as DJ Quick, Christopher Williams, and Shirely Murdock, as well as played all over the upstate. We are very excited to have them on our lineup for this year's Jazz on the Square!

Come to Walnut Grove Plantation for the first in a new series of programs presented by the Spartanburg County Historical Association on the first Saturday of each month from April through November. With the help of reenactors and experts, visitors can explore in-depth a particular aspect of Upstate South Carolina history. The day will always feature one or two kids’ activities that relate to the topic as well as tours of the site’s historic buildings. The Green Screen Film Series returns! Presented by HUB-BUB, the Hub City Farmers Market, the Hub City Co-Op, Partners for Active Living and Upstate Forever, this series runs from February 28–April 17, 2012. "Bee for Books" Adult Spelling Bee

North Spartanburg Rotary Club and the Hub City Writers Project will be having their 1st annual “Bee for Books” adult spelling bee on Saturday, April 14, to collect books for Hub City’s “Great Kids, Great Books” summer reading program for District 7 schools, and to raise money for Rotary District 7750’s “Partners in Literacy Haiti” project to buy French and Creole books for schools in Cange, Haiti. Come join the audience, enjoy light refreshments, and win door prizes. Or make up your own team of 3 adults and compete against others for the main prize, a piece of Haitian art. Audience tickets are $20 each plus 1 book. Entry fee for teams is $300 and 25 gently-used or new children’s/young adult books. He continues to gain astounding recognition worldwide, including TV appearances on the “Martha Stewart Show” (ABC) and the Discovery Channel's "Prodigies & Masters of Tomorrow" series. This will be Li's second time performing with the Spartanburg Philharmonic! Tarrodi’s composition Zephyros is based on the 1918 poem "Song to the Wind of the West" by Swedish poet Dan Anderson. Copies of these books will be available for purchase.  Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience, a traveling exhibition for libraries, was organized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, New York, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office, Chicago. The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name on permanent display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

Twichell Auditorium at Converse College Sinfonia Concertante (Mozart), Sinfonietta (Poulenc) plus Bavarian Folk Music, Fiddle Music, & the Beatles The Augsburger Geigenbande, comprised of internationally recognized Schwamm family members from Germany, perform a wide array of musical styles with repertoire that stretches across five centuries: from Baroque to the Beatles. And the press is taking notice. Augsburger Regional newspaper raves that they're "skillful, tasteful, and full of passion." On Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante Katharina Schwamm (violin) and Teresa Schwamm (viola) lead out. The Spartanburg Philharmonic performs with the Augsburger Geigenbande during Mozart and Poulenc, but after intermission we let go of the reigns. Our cross-cultural experiment takes flight as the Schwamms break out Bavarian folk music, fiddle music, and even some classics from the Beatles!

Goodfellows, the Spartanburg Herald-Journal’s nonprofit organization that has provided food to tens of thousands of Spartanburg-area disadvantaged families since 1947, will celebrate its 65th anniversary Dec. 10 and 11 with a return of the Goodfellows Follies comedy/variety show. Twenty-two members of the original Follies cast that has entertained folks with knee-slapping comedy since the 1950s will be joined by comedian, actress, talk radio host and columnist Pam Stone in both shows at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg. In the Dec. 11 afternoon performance, the Marshall Tucker Band’s Doug Gray and Rick Willis will surprise attendees with a song that will take folks way back in Spartanburg’s music history. The public is invited to sing the well-known parts of Handel’s Messiah at the Chapman Cultural Center Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Lyman, Messiah is George Frederic Handel's most popular and widely performed oratorio, composed in 1741. Its most famous movement is the Hallelujah Chorus, which traditionally ends the performance with the audience standing. During the one-hour long event, only Part I and Hallelujah Chorus will be performed with the church providing a live orchestra and local soloists. There is no charge to participate in the singing or to just listen in the 500-seat David Reid Theatre. The Rev. In 2011, for the tenth consecutive year, GAIHN (Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network) will provide horse-drawn carriage rides through the streets of downtown Greenville during the Christmas/Hanukkah Holidays. All proceeds from the carriage rides are used to help provide emergency assistance for homeless families with children.

On December 16 and 19-23, a horse-drawn carriage will depart from JB Lacher Jewelers on a fifteen minute carriage ride through downtown Greenville bedecked in its holiday splendor (each carriage seats four adults comfortably). Cooper Farm Carriage Service is our excellent carriage company.

The Anderson Lights of Hope annual light display has become a regional attraction during the Holiday season. Many visitors average 5 visits to ‘Lights of Hope’ and the arrangement of the lights changes every year. It has become a tradition in many families for many years. Using over 3.5 million light bulbs Anderson lights of Hope volunteers turn the Darwin Park into a fantasy of lights, enchanting for all ages. The park hosted over 47,000 visitors in 2010 and hopes to increase that number in 2011, keeping the students rather busy. The 2010 proceeds donated to local area charities from this event, including the additional donations of toys, blankets, canned food, eye glasses, cell phones helped make it possible for hundreds of children and adults in the Anderson community to receive life-changing services.

Spartan Photo Center has recently hosted their first annual photography contest open to the general public. With the great success of the college student contest earlier in the year they discovered quickly that many people were eager to show off their impressive skills and passion. Spartan Photo ended up with nearly 100 entries for the public’s viewing and voting pleasure. All photos have been displayed in the second floor Stairway Gallery of the Chapman Cultural Center (open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.) on East Saint John Street in downtown Spartanburg, directly across the street from Spartan Photo Center and is open to the public for voting. Every person is free to choose their top ten favorites (there is a form and voting box in the gallery) and the top ten will be further voted on by the online Facebook crowd with the winners to be announced in December 2011.

Pack a lunch, grab the kids, and enjoy a picnic at Barnett Park, voting on the photos and visiting the various exhibits at the Cultural Center, and stop by Spartan Photo Center for a free cup of coffee and some good conversation. We are excited to meet you. Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple: potters and others work with their community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. Between now and December 1, the Spartanburg community will be making hundreds of pottery bowls which will be fired and glazed by volunteers just in time to be filled with soup from local restaurants during a downtown event on January 26, 2012 at Indigo Hall (190A-Ezell Street) from 11am-7pm. 

The bowls will be sold to benefit Total Ministries; an organization that provides basic needs to assist families in Spartanburg County who are facing a financial crisis. http://www.totalministries.org/

As many as 100 Spartanburg artists will spread out across eight local art galleries on the evening of Nov. 17 as the city celebrates the publication of Artists Among Us: 100 Faces of Art in Spartanburg, the newest book from Hub City Press. Compiled by Edward Emory and photographed by Stephen Stinson, Artists Among Us is a large-size, color coffee-table book that spotlights the people who have shaped—and are continuing to shape—a remarkably robust art community. The 224-page book features their photographs, artwork and their personal stories. From 6-8pm on the city’s regular Art Walk night, the artists will meet the public at the following galleries: The Showroom, Carolina Gallery, West Main Co-op, Spartanburg Art Museum, the Guild Gallery, Galley East, Art Lounge, and Wet Paint Syndrome. The 18th annual A Dickens of a Christmas Victorian Christmas celebration, will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in downtown Spartanburg. *In case of severe weather, A Dickens of a Christmas will be held on Thursday, December 1, 2011.  

The event, organized by the Spartanburg Downtown Association, will feature horse drawn carriage rides, roasted chestnuts, hand bell choirs, ballet dancers,characters from the Charles Dickens novel, living windows, holiday choirs, and the magical Denny’s Tree Lighting Ceremony. The Tree Lighting Ceremony will get underway at 7:30 p.m. and will include a community sing-along of favorite Christmas songs.
