  Zephyros (Tarrodi, US Premiere) Piano Concerto No. 1 (Liszt) Symphony No. 3, "Eroica" (Beethoven) Winner of countless awards, including the 2010 Cooper International Piano Competition, 16-year-old George Li has gained significant attention as a recitalist and soloist. He continues to gain astounding recognition worldwide, including TV appearances on the “Martha Stewart Show” (ABC) and the Discovery Channel's "Prodigies & Masters of Tomorrow" series. This will be Li's second time performing with the Spartanburg Philharmonic! Tarrodi’s composition Zephyros is based on the 1918 poem "Song to the Wind of the West" by Swedish poet Dan Anderson. Copies of these books will be available for purchase.  Pride and Passion: The African-American Baseball Experience, a traveling exhibition for libraries, was organized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, New York, and the American Library Association Public Programs Office, Chicago. The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: great ideas brought to life. The traveling exhibition is based on an exhibition of the same name on permanent display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.

On January 22 the Spartanburg community will have the opportunity to hear this delightfully unique program. Twichell Auditorium's mighty Casavant organ is one of the largest and best in Spartanburg, and Brennan Szafron, immediate past dean of the American Guild of Organists, Spartanburg chapter and adjunct instructor of organ at Converse College, will play his first-ever faculty recital at Converse with a plethora of Converse faculty and personal acquaintances. The program is entitled “Organ and Friends,” whereby Brennan gets to take pleasure in sharing works of diverse periods for organ and other instruments; joining him will be violinist Sarah Johnson, flutist Christopher Vaneman, cellist Brenda Leonard, pianist Annalisa Monticelli, oboist Kelly Vaneman, and percussionist Adena McDaniel.

Dr. Vaneman and Dr. Weeks will perform four sonatas for oboe and piano: Sonata in C Major, Op. 70, no. 1 by François Devienne, Sonata for Oboe and Piano (1947) by Henri Dutilleux, Sonata in E minor by Georg Philipp Telemann, and Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Op. 166 by Camille Saint-Saëns. This program is unique in that it includes a work from each style period, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Twentieth Century.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger. The basic premise is simple: potters and others work with their community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity. The Spartanburg community has made, fired and glazed hundreds of pottery bowls that will be filled with soup from local restaurants at our event on January 26, 2012 at Indigo Hall (190A-Ezell Street) from 11am-7pm. The bowls will be sold to benefit Total Ministries; an organization that provides basic needs to assist families in Spartanburg County who are facing a financial crisis. http://www.totalministries.org/

January 21st, Poetry Out Loud: For the fifth year, the Hub City Writers Project will host the regional competition for this high school poetry recitation contest sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Foundation, and the South Carolina Arts Commission. Please join us at The Showroom as ten students face off to see who will head to the state-wide finals in Columbia. The event is free and open to the public. Poetry Out Loud combines the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater.

January 28th, Film Fan Night: Part of the “Expecting Goodness” Short Film Festival. Do you love film? Ever wanted the opportunity to be a part of a film project and learn more about the filmmaking process?  This evening will bring together filmmakers, producers, actors, screenwriters, and those curious about, interested in, or involved with filmmaking in the region. It's one grand networking night and opportunity to make connections with filmmakers involved in the “Expecting Goodness” Short Film Festival and beyond. From 5-7pm, the public is welcome to meet many of the filmmakers taking part in the festival and even sign up to help on a film. From 7-9pm, the public is invited to learn about the film industry from area professionals, including screenwriting, starring in a film, applying to film school, the history of film, and more.

Exhibit by Carole Tinsley: Non-objective Artist to Show in Guild Gallery Continues through January 28th Artists’ Guild Gallery at Chapman Cultural Center http://www.artistsguildofspartanburg.com/

Greenville artist Carole Knudson Tinsley, a member of the Artists' Guild of Spartanburg, will be exhibiting a series of works entitled "Layers in Time" at the Guild Gallery at Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg starting Jan. 4, and running through Jan. 28. Free public viewing is Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.  Calling her works "abstract and non-objective," Tinsley says the works involve "ancient cultures, especially American Indians. I create my paintings with all types of water media, painting in layers, burnishing away, collaging and scarring the surface." As she notes, "I want to leave some mystery for the viewer's imagination." Influenced by ancient Egyptian art, Renaissance painters, Impressionists, Expressionists, and Native Americans, Tinsley hopes "to capture a glimpse of the history of these people. I want to bring an awareness of their cultures."

Step back in time to Christmas in the 1960s with glitz and glam, not to mention aluminum trees, electric lights, holiday albums, and television specials. Remember again, or experience for the first time, the era’s authentic toys and vintage ads in an exhibit featuring ‘60s-era furniture. Make an ornament inspired by the many Christmas wreaths during the time of JFK, the Apollo missions, The Beatles, the Civil Rights Movement, and Vietnam. Converse College Intern Alexandria Brown was the student curator for the exhibit and will offer a gallery talk at the December 9 reception. Laura Spong is one of South Carolina's best known non-objective painters. In a career that started in 1948, her reputation has soared in recent years. Glendale Outdoor Leadership School: Kayak Safety Course August 20th http://www.palmettoconservation.org/PaddleCourse.asp Palmetto Conservation Foundation and the Glendale Outdoor Leadership School will be hosting a 2-day workshop on river safety and river rescue. This workshop is made possible through a grant from the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (SCPRT). Both classes will be taught by ACA certified instructors from the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). The River Safety Course is designed to teach beginner paddlers to safely and enjoyably kayak on gentle rivers. Emphasis is placed on exercising good judgment and safety as a state of mind, trip preparation and planning. Hazard Prevention is the focus; participants will learn proper water reading skills and paddling techniques to safely navigate whitewater.

Artists’ Guild Exhibit: “Form and Feeling” Continues through August 27th http://www.artistsguildofspartanburg.com/ North Carolina painter, Kate Thayer, and Spartanburg sculptor, Lalage Warrington, will be the featured artists for the Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg in August. Their combined work—entitled “Form and Feeling”—will be on display throughout the month in the Guild Gallery at the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg. It is free for public viewing Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The last viewing day will Saturday, Aug. 27.

Spartanburg County Historical Association: First Peoples of the Backcountry Native American Festival September 2 – 3 Chapman Cultural Center http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=199383356773055 The Spartanburg Regional History Museum hosts an extended exhibit of regional Native American history at the Chapman Cultural Center Sept. 1-Nov. 12, entitled “First People of the Backcountry.” The exhibit launches with a reception in the Spartanburg Regional History Museum on Sept. 1 and a two-day public and free festival Sept. 2-3.

The exhibit’s opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 1, 6-8 pm includes an introduction to the exhibit and refreshments. It is free and open to the public. The next day, Friday, Sept. 2, the Native American Festival begins at noon. It is also free and open to the public. All schools, churches, and other organizations are invited to come and celebrate Native American history as presented by members of these living cultures. Presentations include Native American drums, music, storytelling, food, blowguns, and more. It will wrap up on Saturday with a traditional Pow Wow led by area tribes. Again this summer, Walnut Grove Plantation and Historic Price House will each host two Friday Campfires on the second Fridays of June, July, August and September. Former cotton farmer, Jim Scott, will recount the history of cotton framing and discuss the impact of the industry on the Upstate over the years. Five names will be randomly chosen about 30 minutes before the end of practice. The children selected will receive a Panther Pal T-shirt and will be escorted to a special area to watch the conclusion of practice.
