I swear to God, Snotlout is built different. Like, this dude is experiencing things that are impossible to experience: multiple lightning strikes to the head (although, okay, he doesn't have a brain, so there's nothing to fry); countless set-on-fire-incidents; bites from his own dragon; bites from other dragons, and bite from a wolf; a yaknog. And that's what I remember. I swear to everything I have, if he were in Hiccup's place at the end of the first movie, he would have come out of the Red Death fire intact and conscious, maybe with a burn on his ass, but that's it.
yapped about httyd w a friend and she brought up how it was shown multiple times that hiccup knows the timing of toothless' blasts and if you connect it to the second movie when hiccup told stoick to stay there??
he knew the timing of the blasts, he could have jumped away last minute- but stoick didnt know that. He just wanted to save hiccup
makes it a LOT more sadder and yk... hiccup's internal angst
Rereading the HTTYD books and rewatching the movies and I am forever amazed at how they can be so vastly different but also share so much of the same heart.
And the way the stories mirror each other but ultimately lead to the same ending? So good. The books start with the dragons trained, lead to the Red Rage and the humans and dragons going to war, and end with the dragons slowly going into hiding until the world is ready for them. The movies start with the humans and dragons at war, lead to the dragons being trained and the dragons' and humans' lives being intertwined, and ultimately end with the dragons going to a safe place until the world is ready for them. The symmetry is brilliant.
Both the books and the movies have my heart. I love tiny green Toothless and the black Windwalker (who movie Toothless was definitely based on) and beautiful movie Toothless, and I love book Hiccup and movie Hiccup, and how they both have to learn to Become a Hero the Hard Way.
That being said, do I also desperately want a TV show or movie that accurately portrays the books? Absolutely. It would be icing on an already incredible cake.

HTTYD-THOUGHTS:
Just wondering if it was only me who's noticed this detail in the books..
In book 2, (How to be a pirate) When Alvin the treacherous was first introduced he makes up a lie about digging a hole to "Plant potatoes" but in book 4 (How to cheat a dragon's curse) It is stated that potatoes are impossible to find and superstitions say that if you say "potatoes" you will be cursed so they named it "the-vegetable-that-no-one-dares-name" so how did they not get suspicious when Alvin mentioned planting potatoes? Especially when there was a whole story about the only potato during that time in Hysteria with Norbert the Nut-Job?
Watched httyd 2 for the first time in probably a decade. These movies are still amazing <3 I grew up not only loving these but also really loving the race to the edge Netflix series lol. I’m of the opinion that it still holds up actually, and I’ve been rewatching it.
Makes me want a dragon of my own ngl. Some of the species look so absurd it’s kind of funny. They’re all pretty cool though.
I genuinely feel like we could have gotten so much character development from the lightfury in the homecoming short. We see by the end of the movie she's coming around to Hiccup, why not expand on that. Why not have her take a trip to spy on the humans to understand WHY her mate is sad. Like seeing her bond or at least come to understand the bond better would have been satisfying. Instead, we get the same character from the beginning of the movie. Wasted potential in my opinion
