back in december, someone in the beyond-canon channel said " instead of naughty and nice lists santa is changing it to tme and tma lists " (verbatim) and the mods who were active in the chat didn't reprimand them at all . even though that person openly implied that an entire group of people (tme's) were inherently bad because of their gender

good things happening in #beyond-canon
have some random things i made in the hsod
when i first read homestuck i loved it so much, and the first place i tried talking with people about it was the (recently defunct) unofficial discord server. i was new to fandom spaces at the time so i didn't really understand yet, but that was the most toxic online environment i've Ever been in. i thought it was so strange that everyone there was so hostile and acted like they didn't even enjoy the comic. discussion of post canon was like this especially, and it made me hold off from reading the epilogues for several months after finishing the comic. i got bullied and harrased there for believing jade harley was transfem (which is literally canon btw) and i never wanted to talk there again. keep in mind i was in the middle of figuring out my own mess of a gender at the time too and this experience was Not helpful
this all scared me away from interacting with the fandom pretty much at all. i made a tumblr for the sole purpose of sharing my art, but i was afraid to do more with it at the time because i was worried of more toxicity
when the official discord came around, i decided to give it a try. i didn't talk much at first, but when hsbc updates came out i would join the discussion, and eventually i became a regular to the beyond canon channel. i was so surprised by how nice everyone was, it felt like i was surrounded by fandom that actually liked homestuck for the first time, and it made me really happy! i didn't even know fandom Could be like this, and it changed a lot for me. this is around the same time i started posting here a lot more, because i became comfortable with fandom again
all this to say, i am so grateful for the hsod and #beyond-canon for showing me that fandom spaces can be wonderful, and i am so so so so So glad that the unofficial discord is dead and buried. fuck them.
fandom spaces shouldn't be scary. if you're in a fandom space that makes you feel scared or vulnerable interact with it, please find somewhere better. you deserve better. fandom Can be beautiful
