still,   despite   himself,   he   had   hope.   which   was   foreign   enough   for   max,   but   he   had   it   nonetheless.   and   that   hope   was   in   the   form   of   mercedes,   who   was   sitting   beside   him   on   the   opposing   stool,   bar   side   of   the   tavern.

the   entire   place   reeks   of   sweat,   nature,   and   piss.   a   combination   that   wasn’t   winning   it   any   points.

not   that   he   hoped   he   that   she   wouldn’t   join   in   on   the   nerd   behavior,   he   hadn’t   quite   reached   that   level   of   delusion   yet,   but   their   similarities   were   enough   to   let   him   know   that   he   wasn’t   going   to   catch   some   kind   of   poor   people   disease   from   drinking   …   whatever   this   was   supposed   to   be.

and   thus   he   was   miserable.   which   was   more   or   less   his   usual,   but   alas.

and   to   make   matters   even   worse,   it   seemed   like   he   couldn’t   even   take   a   leisurely   walk   through   the   park   —   thanks   to   him   sticking   out   like   a   sore   thumb   —   without   having   to   purposely   finesse   and   avoid   any   kind   of   unwanted   confrontation.   just   like   now   when   he   noticed   harley   cameron,   of   all   people,   catching   sight   of   him   and   he   immediately   perking   up.   fuck.   that   was   probably   the   last   thing   he   wanted.   and   it   was   plain   for   anyone   to   see   in   the   way   that   he   abruptly   stopped   moving,   rolled   his   eyes   at   the   headache   that   he   knew   was   imminent,   and   began   to   mentally   brace   himself,   completely   powerless   to   do   anything   but   watch   and   wait   as   she   began   making   her   way   over   to   him.

before   he   could   even   realize   it,   the   situation   managed   to   get   worse.   because   of   course   it   did.   a   pair   of   overly   enthusiastic   performers   —   dressed   like   some   kind   of   glitter-drenched,   budget   broadway   rejects   —   suddenly   appeared   at   their   sides,   all   smiles   and   grabby   hands,   before   either   of   them   could   so   much   as   protest.   and   just   like   that,   he   was   being   ushered   toward   the   nearby   stage,   harley   in   tow,   like   they’d   both   just   volunteered   for   something   neither   of   them   signed   up   for.

max’s   immediate   reaction   was   resistance.   his   heels   practically   digging   into   the   ground   as   if   that   alone   might   anchor   him   in   place.   it   didn’t.   not   even   a   little.

“you’ve   gotta   be   fuckin’   kidding   me,”   he   muttered   under   his   breath   as   he   was   pulled   up   the   steps,   his   gaze   darting   out   toward   the   small   crowd   that   had   already   begun   to   gather.
