I think I've shown these off before - they're yellow, chinagraph pencil markings someone at the Holden factory/assembly plant in Sydney wrote on there in 1966, to differentiate the PMG fleet code Mercury Red panels from the standard Holden Sultan Red. It seems a bit of a shame to be sanding and painting over it to be honest. So I think my plans for the ignition system in #TheBomb just got a little shake up. The Bomb's beating heart is officially out today, big job made easy with help from @divadpers posed here with yours truly over our prize. Yes, my tongue is hanging out, I'm old and feeble, I get it... 🤣 Next on the list for the engine is strip it down to its core components. The head will be going away for a good clean-up, new guides and a porting. Block will be off up to a local place for a pressure test, cleanup and hone (no rebore unless it really needs it, and then only the bare 30-thou minimum). I'll be reassembling it myself, but there's a bit of expense in the head and the block, plus the new @crowcams gear I'm building it all around, so it'll be on the back burner for a while. At least until the biz picks up again from the 'rona times 🤑 Of course if either the head or block is rooted, it's EV town for me, baby! 😆 Gearbox is out as well - holy shit that old clutch was sooooo fucked 😆 - I'm reconditioning that one myself so I could probably make a start on it any time. No big plans or changes for that so a simple rebuild kit and a bit of TLC may be all it costs. While it's out I may look further into sourcing and fitting that accessory OD I was crapping on about a few weeks ago, but looking at the standard 3-sp non-synchro box where it sits now, I don't think that's going to pan out engineering-wise 🤷 What a great bloody days work! Soooooooo that's 2-pieces of 2.4mx1.2mx1.1mm thick sheets of mild steel cut into quarters to make 8-pieces of 1.2mx0.6m which is somewhere in the vicinity of 6.0m^2 of 1.1mm thick steel?! 🤦‍♂️ I'm fairly sure that even if the maths is shithouse (and I'm under no illusions that it isn't) I've got enough mild steel for the panel work now.
