This talk about Ylissean royals and trust reminds me of how I once saw someone complain that Chrom was a bad Fire Emblem protagonist by bringing up Gangrel's recruitment, saying Chrom's an idiot for trusting Gangrel. I remembered the confusion I felt because Chrom's recruitment of Gangrel is basically him saying "listen I hate you and can't forgive you but if you're done feeling sorry for yourself there's a giant demon dragon that's gonna kill everyone so how about putting yourself to some use".
Oh definitely. Chrom literally said he doesnât forgive him and hates him still, but the man was still up for giving others second chances, especially because it involved saving the world. Stakes were too high to stick to old grudges no matter how much it stung, and so I think it was wise of Chrom to decide to forgo that in favor of recruiting someone he knew was strong. They were up against a foe that would just kill everyone if no one stopped them. Chrom knows very well that Gangrelâs philosophy is âevery man for himselfâ, as he clearly stated on the final battle, and isnât that enough reason to know theyâd at least fight this one battle on your side when the other side is just laying down and dying? Iâd like to think so.
He doesnât up and forgive Gangrel, itâs likely he never will. He decided to trust someone he hated in the field for the sake of them all.
And, idk, I think showing compassion for someone you hate after seeing them wallow in dispair and a shadow of their own selves is a particular kind of strength. Not one many would choose to exercise.
