FAMILY   :   born   in  the  affluent  city  of  newport  beach  ,  california  to  the  jung  family.  her  father  is  the  creative director  of  a  soju  company  while  her  mother  is  the  ceo  of  a  popular  korean  cosmetics  company.  so  ,  she  was  groomed  from  birth  to  be  somebody  in  life.  they  moved  to  canada  right  before  ariel  started  grade  school  on  a whim  as  an  effort  to expand  their business ventures.

image  was  everything  to  the  jung  family  ,  so  they  made  sure  that  ariel  lived  up  to  their  name.  from  the  schools  she  went  to  ,  the  grades  she  got  (   bc  they  def’  made  generous  donations  to  the  schools  she  went  to  in  order  to  keep  her  at  the  top  of  her  class  in  middle  school   )  ,  the  friends  she  kept  &  the  way  she  presented  herself  to  the  public.  everything  had  to  be perfect  &  if  it  wasn’t  ,  faking  it  like  it  was  was  always  the  first  option.  her  life  was  set  up  for  her  to  succeed  &  ariel  &  her  parents  were  willing  to  do  anything  to  make  that  happen.

on  the  outside  their  family  was  all  put  together  ,  but  on  the  inside  ariel was  literally  battling  with  her  mother.  her  mother  is  extremely controlling  ,  and  ariel  feels  like  she  is  being  suffocated.  everything  she  does  isn’t good  enough  in  her  mother’s  eyes-- especially  when  it  comes  to  the  pageant  world.  ngl  ,  her  mother  is  kinda  verbally  abusive  &  enjoys  putting  her  down  bc  she  believes  it  will  toughen  her  up.  so  ,  ariel  kinda  always  has  an  awful  attitude  because  of  it.  she’s truly a fucking c*nt at times.

also  ,  at  a  young  age  ,  ariel  was  put  into  multiple  different  activities  to  find  her niche.  the  one  thing  she ultimately  gravitated  towards  was  beauty  pageants.  her  mom  thought  it  would  be  a  good  idea  to  capitalize  on  her  beauty  at  a  young  age  &  ariel  loved  it.  she  loved  the  spotlight  &  everything  that  came  with  it.

because  of  the  way  her  mother  treats  her  &  her dad  barely  being  around  to  back  her  up  ,  ariel  resents  her  parents  to  the  fullest.

SCHOOL   :   ariel  is  a  pretty  good  student  bc  things  come  naturally  to  her.  she  as  kind  of  conditioned  at  a  young  age  to  always  be  the  best  at  whatever  she  decides  to  do.  so  ,  although  she  doesn’t  alays  show  it  ,  she  takes  her  school  work  very  serious.  especially  since  she  has  to  go  to  college  to  become  a  doctor.  even  though  she secretly  wants  to  go  to  nyc  for  fashion  school.

QUICK-TEMPERED   :   although  she  has  tried  to  work  on  her  temper  ,  it  has  been  a  very  rocky  journey.  a  lot  of  things  irritate  her  &  she  reacts  without  thinking  things  all  the  way  through.  any  little  thing  can  set  her  off  &  she  usually  starts  with  words  to  hurt  people  because  she  knows  they  can  cut  deep.

HONEST   :   ariel  just  does  not  know  how  to  not  be  honest.  if  you  ask  her  for  her opinion  on  something  ,  she  will  say  exactly  what’s  on  her  mind.  she  sugar  coats  nothing  &  spares  no  feelings  in  the  process.

FEISTY   :   ariel  has   a  very  sharp  tongue.  she  is  aware  that  some  things  she  says  can  come  off  out  of  pocket  ,  but  doesn’t  really  care.

PRETENTIOUS   :   because  of  her  mother  ,  ariel  has  this  air  around  her  that  she  is  better  than  most  people.  she  will  let  it  be  known  that  she  feels  that  way  too.  she  def’  uses  her  looks  ,  money  &  status  to fuel  this belief.

1. Manny traded in her pigtails and charm bracelets for blue thongs and low rise denim in grade 9, turning heads and damaging a few friendships along the way.  2. Within that year of using her newfound sexuality, Manny had a very public pregnancy and abortion scandal which sent her into social pariah territory for a short period of time, but eventually she worked her way back and grade 10 was a fairly chill year.  3. However, early in grade 11, Manny decided to pursue acting much to her parents’ distaste. After her father found out about her plans for a boob job, he called her a ‘loose girl’ and kicked her out.  4. She has since tried to make amends with her parents by moving back in, but things are still tense as they don’t feel like she should be pursuing acting and they’re getting down to the wire with graduation around the corner.  5. Manny is very gifted in science (specifically biology) and considers that as an alternate career path.

bio: Holly J was adopted when she was eleven months old. Never being told of her adoption, she fit in like a glove with her adoptive family so she never questioned it. Ambitious parents with high expectations, an older sister with a reputation...Holly J was basically just fulfilling the Sinclair family prophecy at this point by being an outspoken bitch who would step on anyone to get her way. But being this ambitious comes with a price: SAT prep courses, workshops, college courses...Stuff her family couldn’t afford. So she had to humble herself and get a job at The Dot. 1. Holly J works at The Dot as a waitress and continues to be nonplussed about it, but customer service is a great way to practice talking to people like they’re actually humans.  2. She’s made many enemies from being an absolute terror of a person for two years and is working on just focusing on her goals instead of antagonizing people, but it’s very hard.  3. Oftentimes her pride gets in the way of her dating life. She might be too busy or just generally self-sabotaging.  4. She was on the Power Squad before it became too expensive and ended up having to leave the team.

1. Holly J loves to dance -- it was her first love, and the reason she joined the Power Squad, and now that she’s off of the team she tries to keep up with her dancing whenever she has time...which isn’t often.  2. Mia showed up to Degrassi, new from Lakehurst, in grade 10 for a new start after being in some toxic relationships.  2. Balancing mom life with teen life proves hard, but Mia has made a deal with her mom that she can take part in clubs and other extracurriculars as long as she’s home by 8 to put Bella down for bed.  3. Mia considered getting a job to help support her daughter and take the load off of her mom, and fell into modeling part-time. The skeevy environment of the modeling industry is a point of contention between Mia and her mom, but she’s determined to make it work. 

NON-CANON STUFF:

1. Mia’s modeling career is very social media-heavy. She’s part influencer, part model at this point.  2. She’s very active in debate club and is the head of model UN.  3. Part of the modeling industry that Mia finds to be the most challenging are the unrealistic body expectations. She’s had a kid and is self-conscious about the ways that affected her body, and has yet to truly embrace the “anti-airbrush-natural-body” type of modeling due to those insecurities.

jake was born and raised in toronto

but when he was 7 his dad got a job offer in a different province so his family moved across the country

growing up, he always admired his dad and wanted to be just like him and work in construction

anytime glen would let him, he’d come on construction sites and wear a hardhat that was far too big for him and a tool belt that he had to hold tight to keep from falling to his ankles

when he was 12 his mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer that had already spread by the time it was caught

he had to watch her go through chemo treatments that wittled her down to practically nothing and all it did was prolong her life, it didn’t save it

she ended up getting medical grade weed to help with the side effects of the chemo

a few weeks after he turned 14 (on christmas day, to be exact) she passed away and jake was the one who found her cold and unresponsive

he called his dad who came home from work and made all of the necessary calls

glen then took jake on their back porch while they were putting the sheet over his mother and together they smoked her last joint

since it happened, jake has buried a lot of his feelings under his generally cheerful and playful persona and has really taken a liking to weed

they tried to live in that house like everything was normal, but glen eventually decided that they needed to get out of there

so they packed up their things and moved back to toronto when jake was about to turn 15.
