âHarry didn't have to do his homework by flashlight anymore; now he could sit in the bright sunshine outside Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour, finishing his essays with the occasional help from Florean Fortescue himself, who, apart from knowing a great deal about medieval witch burnings, gave Harry free sundaes every half an hour.â
Underappreciated characters: Florean Fortescue
In my head I always remember Florean Fortescue as having a bigger part in the books than he did. Perhaps it was something to do with him representing the small kindnesses of strangers, that, after fleeing the neglect and abuse of the Dursleys - people who were meant to be Harryâs family - the generosity of Florean, who neednât have any stake in Harryâs welfare, stood out. With his free sundaes and help with homework, he showed that there are inherently good people out there more than willing to offer a hand to a too-skinny child all alone for the summer. It turns out that Iâd unwittingly sensed that J.K. had bigger plans for Florean; initially he was meant to play a greater role in the search for the horcruxes. This was why Florean ended up kidnapped and - it transpires - murdered by Voldemortâs followers. But to my mind you neednât know this for his death to be particularly meaningful, because what better way to demonstrate the quiet horrors of tyranny than to snuff out the light of a man as simple and good as Florean? To forever close the doors of an ice cream parlour, those purest of establishments, known only for bringing a little more joy to the world?  Â
