Luke Skywalker-

Riyo noticed your worry the moment you saw her in the garage. You couldn’t help the fact that you wore your heart on your sleeve, anxiety written across your face as clearly as words on a page. She knew — everyone knew — that you were awaiting Echo’s arrival. 

   Communicating was a risk you wouldn’t take, so all that you could do was wait… 

   …and wait… 

      …and wait… 

   “You need to breathe, dove,” Riyo’s soft voice echoed from over your shoulder. “This stress will do you no good.” 

   You glanced up from the crate you were seated on, giving her a pained look. “I-I can’t, Ri. Not when I don’t know where they are or if they’re safe. They should be back any time now…” 

   You heard it then: that deep rumble of thrusters. It caused you to immediately stand to your feet, eyes watering with relief as the ship approached the dock. Your feet carried you with abandon, Riyo’s voice echoing behind you like nothing more than a whisper. 

   With your blood rushing in your ears and your heart thundering in your chest, you watched the shuttle dock and decompress with a hiss, thuds echoing as its weight settled on the landing gear. The rear hatch unlocked, billowing steam as it lowered. You grimaced when the bright light from within blinded you, causing you to lift a hand and shield your eyes with your palm. 

   Footsteps thunked down the ramp. 

   You felt ready to sob, no matter if the news was bad or good. 

   Voices echoed. Voices you knew by heart, as identical as they sounded. 

   The steam cleared. 

   Boots hit solid ground. 

   And when you lowered your hand from your face, it felt as if all the air in your lungs just disappeared. There was no more sign of Riyo, Echo, or even Gregor and the few you came to know as their first successfully-saved brothers. 

   There was nothing but you and Howzer. 

   He looked the same as when he was taken from you. Same hair and scar that you would caress with the pad of your fingertips. Same eyes that you dreamt of. Same lips that you kissed and cherished. He was thinner than before, and the shadow cast across his face said more than you could ever imagine, but it was him. 

   And he was here. 

   The moment he noticed you, his entire face dissolved into shock. Confusion. It was as if he wasn’t sure if you were real; as if he struggled to make sense of you and the truth of his freedom. Months of solitude and imprisonment cast a gaunt look that miraculously lifted the moment his lips mouthed your name. 

   A sob slipped. You were trembling, shaking, legs as weak as twigs, but you found the strength to step forward. Dazed steps guided your feet forward one step at a time, gradually picking the pace as you found enough air to fill your lungs. 

   Before you knew it, you were running. 

   The world around you was a blur but you didn’t care for it. You didn’t care for anything but him. Every step sent buzzes surging up your legs, but you kept sprinting, rushing just to be within his reach.

   Howzer dropped everything to run to you. The look in his eyes, bleeding relief and shock, never faded until he was inches away, opening his arms to accept you with fervor. 

   You crashed into his chest, arms thrown around his neck. His tightened around your waist, holding - squeezing - as if desperate to keep you close. When you began to sob into his neck, he cupped the back of your head, turning to press a chaste, impatient kiss to your hairline. 

   “Cyare,” he breathed, pulling away to press his forehead to yours. “I’m here. I’m right here.” 

   “I-I thought I lost you,” you cried softly, tears blurring his image before he wiped them with his thumbs. “I thought you were gone-” 

   “I’m not going anywhere,” he promised, his voice shaking. “I’m staying here, dove. Right here with you.” 

   “Promise me,” you quivered. His palm rubbed down your spine, the other squeezing you with nothing short of need. “Promise me you won’t go where I can’t find you.” 

   When you lifted your head to look at him, Howzer cupped both sides of your face and pulled you in, pressing his lips to yours in a kiss. It was rushed but it was needed — a confirmation, a promise, that this wasn’t a dream and it wasn’t a false hope. That this was true and it was happening. 

   I have you now, said his kiss, and I’m never going to let go. 

   “This Empire will have to pry you from my cold, dead hands before I ever let you go,” he vowed, pressing his forehead to yours. “I’m staying here, mesh’la. For good.”
