I call this picture, “How Many Hands?” When I found this in my internet wanderings, the question just popped into my mind -- how many hands have grasped this handle over the generations?
As a blacksmith, I really enjoy spreading the Gospel of Iron Goodness, as I call it, because I feel like we’ve lost something very important in modern times. This door handle shows the weathering of ages because it wasn’t replaced when the fad changed. Quality, hand-forged ironwork is a legacy that you can leave your children in the same way people leave silver and china. It is an investment that holds its value.
When everybody seems to be clamoring about carbon footprints, making something that will last for centuries seems to be a pretty good idea. It’s only when we throw perfectly good things in the trash so we can keep up with the Jones’ that we add to the burden on our planet.
To forge a door handle like this would take me a few hours. Then it will last for a hundred years or more if folks take care of it.
